  1. Jeffrey Reece Ficiatte. Just a normal boy trying to lead a normal life. Jeff and his family moved to a small town in the suburbs outside of Boston, much to his apprehension. Being thirteen years of age, and socially awkward, he found it hard to make new friends. Moving to a new town wouldn't particularly help matters, but with his mom's new job, they didn't have much of a choice. His brother Liu was two years younger than him and was the happy-go-lucky type, so his reservations about the big move were quite the opposite. He was excited to be in a new town with new people. This sickened Jeff and only made him feel worse. In any case, he kept his thoughts to himself, knowing he couldn't sway his mother's decision.
  2.
  3. Jeff's first day in the new town wasn't so bad. He spent the day with Liu and his mom, unpacking things. It wouldn't sound like much fun to the average person, but Jeff actually found it to be quite nice. They enjoyed eachother's company for the day, and then had some take-out while watching an old cheesy horror flick. If it weren't for what happened next, Jeff's outlook on the situation may have changed from gloomy to somewhat positive.
  4.
  5. Just as the movie was 'getting to the good part' according to Jeff's mom, there was a knock at the door. This made Jeff's heart sink, as he knew who was behind it. His mom got up and opened the door revealing none other than Jeff and Liu's stepfather. For almost the entire day Jeff had forgotten about this man. He had forgotten that he would be meeting them at the new house that night, and forgotten really that he even existed.
  6.
  7. "Hey, hon. So, what do you think?"
  8.
  9. Jeff's mom asked this happily, moving her arm in the fashion of a game show host revealing a contestant's prize.
  10.
  11. "...Looks like you guys need to finish unpacking."
  12.
  13. His stepdad said in a stern tone. He walked over to the fridge and peered inside.
  14.
  15. "No beer?"
  16.
  17. "I didn't get the chance to go shopping yet. If you want, I can go out now and-"
  18.
  19. Jeff's mom was cut off by the sound of the fridge door being slam shut.
  20.
  21. "Just forget it."
  22.
  23. Jeff's stepdad walked over to the television, picked up the remote, and changed the channel to a sports program.
  24.
  25. "We were watching that."
  26.
  27. Jeff said this in the most casual and calm way possible.
  28.
  29. "Don't talk back to me. You and your brother, go to bed now!"
  30.
  31. Jeff's mother took the two of them upstairs to bed, knowing that at least one of her sons was now miserable.
  32.
  33. "I'm sorry, guys. John probably had a long day at work. He's got a lot on his plate right now. I hope you guys understand."
  34.
  35. Liu nodded, but Jeff did not. He simply said "Whatever.", and crawled into bed. His day was irrevocably ruined by the bane of his existence. He hated his stepfather with every fiber of his being. The only thing he hated more was how his mom let him step all over her. It made him sick to his stomach, some days - this night in particular. The only thing that provided him with comfort was his imagination. On nights like this, Jeff would picture toturing his stepfather; hurting him in multiple ways. He would picture it like the horror movies he watched, and simply replace the killer with himself and the victim with his stepdad. It felt so good to think about it that sometimes Jeff would get carried away. Sometimes an hour would pass before he realized it was all he was doing. He would then snap out of it and continue about his day. That night, however, was different.
  36.
  37. Jeff was so angry at his stepfather for ruining his night, that he thought of new and unique ways to hurt him. Whenever he pictured it before, his methods were usually cheesy and mundane, much like the movies he watched. That night, he took it a step further. He pictured things that he could actually do right there at the house. He imagined going downstairs, grabbing a knife from the kitchen drawer, going out to the living room, and slicing his stepdad's throat clean open. This was the first time Jeff had pictured a scenario in a familiar setting. What he noticed, too, was that it felt better. The more realistic the setting, the better he felt inside when performing the crime in his head. Jeff became excited.
  38.
  39. He continued to think of ways to torture his stepfather all night. Before he knew it, it was morning, and his mom was knocking on his bedroom door to wake him up for his first day of school. Jeff was shocked. He didn't realize just how long he had been fantasizing for. He was a little worried given that he'd never spent that much time doing it, but he prefered not to dwell on it. With no rest, Jeff got dressed and went downstairs to eat breakfast before school.
  40.
  41. Upon arriving on the bottom step of the staircase, Jeff noticed two things that made his stomach turn. One was the smile on his brother's face as he ate his pancakes. Clearly he was excited for school, much unlike Jeff. The second thing John sitting at the table with him. Jeff hesitantly walked over to join them.
  42.
  43. "Took you long enough. Your breakfast is getting cold."
  44.
  45. Jeff ignored his comment and sat down to eat.
  46.
  47. "Good morning, John! Nice to see you, John! How are you doing today, John? Come on, nothing? You're just going to mope around and ignore us?"
  48.
  49. Jeff's stepdad loved to pick fights. There was never a redeeming thing that came out of his mouth; only provocation. Jeff did not know what his mother saw in him. He continued to ignore him, in the hopes that he would simply shutup. Instead, John mumbled under his breath.
  50.
  51. "Kids these days."
  52.
  53. Jeff bit his tongue during the course of breakfast. Luckily, John left before he and Liu had to. This gave them enough time to speak in peace.
  54.
  55. "You really shouldn't make him mad like that."
  56.
  57. Liu was young and naive, but he seemed to have a whole system worked out; one that allowed him to live each and every day carefree and without trouble. Deep down, Jeff envied him.
  58.
  59. "Shutup, Liu. I didn't do anything and you know it."
  60.
  61. Liu was quiet after that, but soon broke the silence once more.
  62.
  63. "Are you excited for school?"
  64.
  65. "No."
  66.
  67. "Why not?"
  68.
  69. Liu always was a persistent one.
  70.
  71. "Because I'm not."
  72.
  73. "That's not an answer."
  74.
  75. Not only was he persistent, but he always had a knack for getting on Jeff's nerves without realizing it.
  76.
  77. "Leave me alone, okay? I can't always be happy like you."
  78.
  79. Liu was surprised at Jeff's reaction. He remained quiet and didn't press the matter any further.
  80.
  81. Jeff's mother came downstairs, fully dressed, but with a towel on her head. She had just finished showering.
  82.
  83. "Okay, guys. Let's go! I'll walk you to the bus stop."
  84.
  85. "Don't worry about it, Mom. We'll be fine. I know where it is. Besides, you shouldn't be going anywhere with a towel on your head like that. You'll draw attention."
  86.
  87. She smirked at Jeff's obvious attempt at a joke.
  88.
  89. "Very funny, Jeffrey. I was just about to take it off. Are you sure you don't want me to come with you?"
  90.
  91. "We're fine, Mom. Go dry your hair."
  92.
  93. Jeff and Liu walked out the front door as their mom finally took the towel off of her head. They could hear her yelling goodbye from the front window.
  94.
  95. "Have a good day at school! I love you!"
  96.
  97. Liu waved back, but Jeff just kept walking. He was ready to get this day over with.
  98.
  99. After five minutes of walking in silence, Jeff and Liu arrived at the bus stop. Waiting there already were five other kids. There was a young girl sitting on the bench, minding her own business. The four others were boys and they were engaged in some sort of conflict. Jeff and Liu noticed that a young boy about Liu's age was trying desperately to retrieve his backpack from the other three boys, each of whom looked to be around Jeff's age. They were tossing it around, back and forth. It seemed the young boy was unwillingly partaking in a game of 'monkey in the middle'. Jeff and Liu just stood there, impartial to the sitauation.
  100. The three boys stopped what they were doing when they noticed Jeff and Liu. They threw the backpack at the young kid and walked over to introduce themselves.
  101.
  102. "You must be the new kids who moved in to the house down the street, right?"
  103.
  104. Jeff and Liu nodded.
  105.
  106. "Well, I'm Randy. This is Keith, and that big guy right there is Troy. We're kind of in charge around here."
  107.
  108. Randy was obviously arrogant. Jeff ignored this and conversed with him, as if his greeting was a normal one.
  109.
  110. "I'm Jeff. This is my brother, Liu."
  111.
  112. Randy snarled.
  113.
  114. "Liu, huh? Looks pretty short to be going to our school. How old are you, anyway? Eight?"
  115.
  116. Liu gave Randy a dirty look. Jeff was uninterested in speaking any further with the three boys. He still wanted to get the day over with. Luckily the bus pulled up and broke up the awkward tension.
  117.
  118. The young boy and girl quickly boarded the bus, frightened of Randy and his friends. Troy and Keith went next, reserving a spot in the back for Randy, who followed close behind. Jeff and Liu sat together near the front, isolated from the rest of the kids.
  119. As the bus made its way to the school, Jeff noticed that Liu looked troubled. He didn't really care why, but figured he would ask anyhow so as to keep from feeling bored the whole way there.
  120.
  121. "What's wrong?"
  122.
  123. Liu looked up at Jeff, almost angrily.
  124.
  125. "It would've been nice if you stuck up for me."
  126.
  127. Jeff now regretted asking the question.
  128.
  129. "I'm too tired, Liu. Besides, you are short for your age."
  130.
  131. Liu put his head back down and became silent again. Jeff was relieved. At least now they could both be unhappy.
  132.
  133. Several minutes later, the bus arrived at school. The kids trotted out one by one until it came to Randy and his pals. They tried to squeeze out all at once. If it weren't for Troy, it may have been possible, but his gearth would not allow it. They ended up getting off of the bus in a normal fashion instead. Jeff and Liu were the last ones off.
  134.
  135. "Hey, Jeff, come join us!"
  136.
  137. Randy signaled Jeff to come over. Jeff wasn't sure why, but he obliged. Liu looked at him in confusion.
  138.
  139. "Oh, come on, Liu. You'll be fine. Go ahead without me."
  140.
  141. Liu sulked in disappointment, but did in fact venture into the school without his big brother. Jeff then caught up with Randy.
  142.
  143. "You should sit with us in the cafeteria before school starts. They're serving oatmeal and Troy bet his lunch money he can eat five bowls without vomitting. It's going to be classic."
  144.
  145. It seemed as though Randy wanted to make friends with Jeff. He and his goons weren't an ideal bunch to be hanging out with, but beggars can't be choosers, especially on the first day of school. It also helped that Jeff was curious as to whether Troy could actually hold down all of that oatmeal. Jeff agreed to join them and they were off.
  146.
  147. Breakfast went by quick as Jeff was actually having fun with his new friends. He started to feel like he was part of the group. Never before did he really have any friends. He always just kind of went about his business. This was nice for a change.
  148.
  149. The rest of the day went by as normal for both Jeff and Liu. They met up on the bus at the end of the school day, however this time Liu sat alone. Jeff sat at the back of the bus with his new friends. By now, Liu was used to Jeff's behavior, so he no longer thought anything of it. That was good, because Jeff was the kind to do whatever he wanted anyway, no matter what Liu thought about it. In private, Liu thought Jeff was being foolish.
  150.
  151. By the end of the bus ride, Liu was convinced he'd be walking home alone. He was surprised when Jeff got off the bus with him. Randy and them took off in the opposite direction.
  152.
  153. "I thought you'd be hanging out with your new friends."
  154.
  155. Liu said this with a pinch of resentment.
  156.
  157. "I will be, later. We've made plans to break into the abandoned house the next street over."
  158.
  159. Jeff was sick of his brother's moping at this point, and noticed that he was still distraught.
  160.
  161. "You know, you can come with us if you want."
  162.
  163. Liu looked very surprised, but reluctant.
  164.
  165. "That sounds dangerous, Jeff."
  166.
  167. "Okay. You can stay home then."
  168.
  169. Liu thought about it for a second and then changed his decision.
  170.
  171. "Nevermind. I'll go."
  172.
  173. Liu was just happy his brother was including him in something for once.
  174.
  175. The two boys went home and ate some dinner before heading out on their nightly adventure. Luckily their step-dad wasn't home from work yet to question them. When asked by their mother where they would be going, Jeff simply said they had made a new friend and the neighborhood and they would be going over his house to hang out. She was so trusting that she bought it without giving it a second thought. Jeff and Liu finished eating dinner and headed out before it got too darrk. They met up with Randy, Keith, and Troy at the end of the next street.
  176.
  177. "What's the short guy doing here?"
  178.
  179. Randy asked this in confusion, clearly referring to Liu.
  180.
  181. "I invited him. Is that a problem?"
  182.
  183. Randy thought about it for a moment and then replied.
  184.
  185. "No. Not at all. Follow us. The house is just on the other end of this street."
  186.
  187. Jeff and Liu followed. Jeff was excited, but Liu seemed scared. Jeff noticed this, but didn't really care. He was too caught up in the thrill of adventure. After a few more minutes of this private joy, Randy and the guys stopped at an old, rickety, wooden house.
  188.
  189. "Here it is. Troy, Keith - do your thing!"
  190.
  191. Troy and Keith walked over to what looked like a bulkhead on the side of the house and started bashing it in. They were literally breaking and entering. Either way, their caveman methods worked. The bulkhead door swung open shortly after they started pounding on it.
  192.
  193. "So, you guys are our guests. You should have the honor of going in first."
  194.
  195. Randy said this with such delight. This was odd to both Jeff and Liu as he didn't strike them as the polite type. Liu was of course hesitant to enter the old house, but Jeff spoke up for the both of them.
  196.
  197. "Okay. We'll do it."
  198.
  199. Jeff didn't want to look like a wimp in front of his new friends. He walked over to the bulkhead and Liu cautiously followed. They made their way over and stared down at the basement steps. The room below was filled with an eerie darkness. Even Jeff was reluctant to go in now. They both stood there for a moment, gathering their wits.
  200.
  201. "Okay, guys - NOW!"
  202.
  203. Randy yelled to Troy and Keith. Without any further warning, the three of them pushed Jeff and Liu down the steps.
  204. It all happened so fast and unexpectedly, that Jeff didn't have time to think about what was happening. He just found himself laying on a cold cement floor, in pain. He heard Randy's voice again shortly after.
  205.
  206. "You're just as gullible as I'd hoped, Jeff! Did you actually think you could be one of our friends? Ha! You're the new kid in town - we had to mess with you. Lucky for us, you brought that little twerp with you - two suckers for the price of one! See you, later, losers!"
  207.
  208. Randy shut the bulkhead door and walked away, laughing with Troy and Keith. Jeff was furious.
  209.
  210. "Liu, where are you?"
  211.
  212. Jeff didn't get a response. He couldn't see anything in the dark, so he felt around for Liu. Eventually he came upon his arm.
  213.
  214. "Liu! Are you okay? Come on, Liu. Mom and John will kill me if you're hurt."
  215.
  216. He moved his hand over to Liu's chest. He didn't feel any breathing. Liu was...he was gone. The three punks probably didn't mean to, but they had killed Liu. He was smaller and weaker than Jeff and must have snapped his neck on imapct. This gave Jeff the most uneasy feeling. It was something he had never felt before and had no way of coping with it. He allowed this strange feeling to turn into rage. In an effort to find solace, Jeff let his imagination run wild.
  217.
  218. Much like he had pictured torturing his stepdad before, Jeff now pictured doing similar things to Randy. It felt great to think like this, but it wasn't enough. Jeff's mind was going haywire with a reckless sense of wanting. These things he was picturing - they needed to come true. He needed to torture a human being, and that human being had to be Randy.
  219.
  220. Jeff got up off of the cellar floor and made his way to the bulkhead. He pushed it open, but then noticed the slight pain in his arms. He hadn't broken anything, but it was still bothersome. This just added to his rage. Before going any further, Jeff noticed an old, rusty shovel lying on the ground near what looked like a long-dead garden. He picked it up and headed off.
  221. Jeff ran away from the house in the hopes of catching up with Randy and the others. He realized while running that he was actually going through with this. He was going to hurt and torment someone. The idea of it intoxicated Jeff. He started shaking with excitement. Combined with the leftover anger, it made for quite the sensation. Eventually, Jeff saw the boys off in the distance, still causing trouble, it seemed. They were just at the end of the street, throwing rocks at the street sign. Jeff couldn't wait to catch up with them.
  222.
  223. Jeff walked over, slowly, making sure to sneak up on them from behind. He crept up, quietly. He decided that Keith would be his first victim. He was the closest to him, and was the smallest of the three. Jeff took the shovel in hand, and when he got close enough, swung it as hard as he could towards the back of Keith's head. He almost immediately hit the ground. The streetlight illuminated the puddle of blood just right. It was a beautiful pool of coppery darkness. Jeff was overwhelmed with elation at the sight of it. He had been missing out on this feeling his whole life. He had finally found his calling.
  224.
  225. "Holy crap - Keith! You freak! You'll pay for this!"
  226.
  227. Randy was shocked. In a laughing stupor, Jeff ran over to Troy, more than ready for another kill. Randy stopped him with a punch to the temple while big ol' Troy ran away in fear. Jeff landed on the ground, face first.
  228.
  229. "Fine, Troy. I'll take care of him myself."
  230.
  231. Randy walked back over to Jeff and put his foot onto his chest. Jeff simply looked up at him with a smile and began chuckling once more.
  232.
  233. "What are you laughing at, you freak?!"
  234.
  235. "It's time to go to sleep, Randy."
  236.
  237. With one quick motion, Jeff kicked up one of his legs, causing Randy to fall over. Adrenaline pumping through his veins, Jeff got up and put his foot on Randy's chest. He smiled once more before taking Randy's life.
  238.
  239. "No! Please, Jeff. Don't!"
  240.
  241. Randy's plea was futile. With one swing of his arms, Jeff drove the edge of the shovel into Randy's throat, ending his life on contact. More blood oozed out onto the road, satifying Jeff to no end.
  242.
  243. Jeff was now happy. He now knew why he loved fantasizing about causing people pain so much. He now knew what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. No matter how challenging it would become, he would spend his days doing what he loved. This is what brought him joy. He already had his next victim in mind too - his stepfather. That one would just take a little more planning. From this day forward, he was no longer Jeff, the socially awkward, new kid in town. He was now Jeff, the killer.
