- Dear mama,
- The Robin is a good ship, and she flies well; thank you so much for getting everyone together to save up for it. Father is busy showing me how things work out here, and I'm learning a lot! I know you were worried about me, but please don't fret, I really am fine. This is all so terribly exciting!
- Dear mama,
- I met an alien today. They're really not as bad as all the stories on Earth - if you plucked her feathers out she'd be a beautiful human! I was prepared for her being hostile, but it's still so surprising. I mean, I'm running supplies to them, why are they so upset? I'll have to investigate this further!
- Dear mama,
- I think I'm beginning to understand why she was so upset. Life is a lot different on the colonies! I've decided to help everyone, no matter who they are. So don't worry about me, okay? I'm tough!
- Dear mama,
- I ran supplies to a Unionist planet today. I feel like I'm being judged! I don't think anyone would attack me just because of the way I look, though. I mean, I'm here to help, right? Even Unionists must be able to acknowledge that.
- Dear mama,
- I was definitely right to have faith. One of them stood up for me when someone tried to start a fight! It was very illuminating to talk with them afterwards. I know they're Unionists, but before that, they're people too.
- Dear mama,
- People don't have water out here. Can you imagine that? On Earth, we always had an abundance of water, and yet on this planet it's the greatest commodity. To make things worse, their water treatment plant was damaged in hostilities, but I probably shouldn't say any more about that.
- Dear mama,
- I met a new friend today! Her name is Elizan and she's a Unionist doctor. She always seems terrified of everything, but I saw her giving triage and she was very commanding there. I offered to give her a lift.
- Dear mama,
- Make that a partnership! This is going to be great! Medical care is in great demand out here.
- Dear mama,
- People are so awful to aliens. I just can't stand it. I wish the legislators could come out here and spend a few days in these slums before making some of those decisions. I'm sure they'd be reasonable if only they knew.
- Dear mama,
- I'm learning a lot working with Elizan. People are willing to say a lot more to their nurses. But... a lot of what I'm hearing... well, don't worry. I'll be fine!
- Dear mama,
- Working out here is very frustrating.
- Dear mama,
- I'm sorry for the terse phrasing of that last message, but truly it is. One girl from Earth can't come out here and fix all these problems, and it's presumptuous to try! But even trying to support these people in helping themselves... what right do I have? But I can't just leave. Mother, I don't think I can ever come back to Earth and live happily, knowing what I know. I love you, and I love my planet, but... I know why father never came home, now.
- Dear mama,
- I'm going to do the best I can. Please, have faith in me!
