Fox’s BLFC Writeup 2019

Well this will be a shorter writeup than usual (I think)!  If you haven’t seen one of these before, I always type up a summary of most of the things I did since I have an awful memory.  I usually go into what I’m planning to do in the future before the next writeup as well!

This was an incredibly impromptu trip for me!  I decided quite literally a month before the event to attend, so I had basically zero discounts and zero plans and basically set my wallet on fire to attend just because I knew I needed a break.  Since everything was ridiculously expensive, I stayed for a much shorter amount of time than usual, I arrived on Thursday and left Sunday morning, I’m actually writing this on my plane ride back home!

Day Zero was pretty short, I got in and somehow immediately found Stigmata and Sasha in the Spa level while wandering around.  It was odd because I almost never see them outside of the dealer’s den even during after hours, it was a treat nonetheless!  I love every interaction I have with those two lovebirds.

After that brief encounter I basically was hanging out with Bery and his New Shiny Boyfriend Lucky, who I’ve somehow known from TF2 days forever ago.  Bery is from Germany and has been staying in the US with Lucky for a week prior, so he has been basically getting spoiled and being shown all of the good things about the US, so of course we went to In and Out for lunch since Bery hasn’t tried it before.  It’s always a fun time watching someone experience something that is incredibly hyped up, but he really enjoyed it and it was blessed :3

Post lunch we split up and I just showed Bery around everywhere since I knew the venue from previous years.  We visited the lewd as heck hotel arcade, which has really gross furry puns everywhere, among all the other Dangerous areas around the hotel.  All of us went to get our badges and were immediately split up because of our last names.  After not moving for what felt like an hour, they split the lines again and I somehow got shot to the front.  I don’t understand convention lines anymore after the nightmare of last MFF, so I’m not even phased by ridiculous happenings like that anymore.  I think at this point they shouldn’t even have names separated out and just have everyone queue into individual lines so there aren’t volunteers doing nothing for long periods of time. because they have a bunch of letters with rare last names like V to Z.

We split up again and I passed out for a while since traveling on planes is exhausting.  I checked out the arcade for a bit since it was open and failed a billion times on many different games, I was honestly a bit disappointed with the arcade this year since they said they were bringing IIDX and instead brought an ultra broken beatmania the final machine lol.  I LOVE beatmania the final, but the fact the game kept dying out on me (shoutout to axel sparkster watching me error out the machine on the first note of Jam and Marmalade) just made the experience pretty terrible.

A plus side of that is I got to try all the other weird games they brought like Beat Stream (an already canceled/dead rhythm game from Konami - nicknamed BeaSt).  BeaSt was surprisingly fun, it reminded me a lot of reflecbeat, but it was also surprisingly hard?  The weird thing is that game had really easy timings, most of my scores were only AA to AAA or 85-100% acc and I usually have terrible accuracy in rhythm games lol.  It had a handful of songs I loved but they were all max difficulty so I could only pass a few of them before I left.  Another game I surprisingly loved was the Nostalgia game, it was extremely easy to play but it had such a good tracklist??  It had the Yuri on Ice!! and 5cm/sec and AnoHana major theme songs and they all basically made me cry while playing LOL.  I swear we have a nostalgia machine on island back home but I never tried it because it looked stupid (and was $2 per play), so I’m going to be on the hunt for that.

I ended up running into Shady who also came to BLFC on a whim since he told me a few days beforehand he wasn’t coming.  We hung out at Johnny Rocket’s eating terribly burnt food covered in mayo and drinking shakes, where I got to meet Gauss and Dravu, who are a married couple I’ve played Overwatch a few times with.  It was overall a really pleasant time outside of the food lmao.

Day 1 (or Friday) was the exciting day I hunted people down to throw candies and treats at their heads!  Honestly not a ton of my friends went this year, but that also made it a lot easier to find everyone I needed to find on Day 1!  I got to chill out with so many people on Friday, I basically hung out with Stigmata + Sasha / Kenket / Cocadope at the dealer’s den then Crackers / his wife, ATigerinSpace / grap?? (Crackers friend??) / ClueKitty / Axel / Bery / NukerFox when we went people watching in the halls by the elevators while waiting for radruler to show up.  At some point I ran into dingables who is hilarious as ever??  I don’t like being nws on twitter or talking about personal lewd things like that, but I cracked up laughing when I was stocking up on lube in the black market at the baddragon booth, since it’s usually like $24 shipping to Hawaii regardless how much I order, and this European guy with a thick accent saw me at the cashier and was like WAOH THAS A LOTTA LUBE and I cracked up on the spot lmfao.  I will never forgive myself if I forget that precious interaction, so I am writing that in my writeup to make me cackle the next time I read it.

I also ended up going to the Twitch panel because it was being run by my only space ottery pal ufotekkie, it was mindblowing how much the furry twitch community grew??  When I attended the panel last blfc there was literally like 10-15 ppl max??  This time it had to be easily over 50+ people!  It felt really odd how the panel was run, I think it really should have just been a quick meet and greet personally because there were so many panelists that it was already halfway through time when they finished introducing who they were.  I don’t really blame them for that since this was the first year they had this many people.  I’m also kinda salty because I submitted a bunch of silly clips and none of them got selected, but a clip of someone getting a 18 damage mastiff airshot kill with octane for a win somehow made it in lol.  I think out of all the clips they showed only two of them were from non panelists, although I have to admit some of the clips were legitimately super funny!  I really think the next time they do a panel they need less panelists or more time, because I think they never got to really flesh out what they wanted to talk about like furrywatch, and they barely got to answer any Q&As.  Maybe they should have just played clips while people were coming in idk, either way I’m being nitpicky, I think the twitch panel was really great overall and was absolutely floored by the turnout.

On one hand it made me want to chase after partnership again, but on the other I really want to spend this year for myself on getting through my 24 games list even if it murders my followers count lol.  If people unfollow because I’m streaming 5 hours of jrpg on top of 5 hrs of fps games instead of 10 hrs of fps it’s kinda whatever?  I think I’d just burn out if I tried to pull the hours I used to pull on singular games if I’m not that into them.  Realistically though I think only 50ish people have unfollowed since December because of it and overall it’s not a huge deal, but it makes me sad when I realize people do lose interest in me if I’m not just fragging out all the time lol.  Could also just be people moving on to other things since I used to do a lot of meme TF2 and phone game streams and now it’s all apex and jrpgs and visual novels lol!  I kind of want to ask doryuu/whiskey/kiit if they want to play apex sometime since I’m grinding for the 50 wins on 7 characters seasonal badge and only really have like... 5 people I play with?  I need to win at least 8 times per day until the season ends if I want it, which I’m positive I can do as long as I don’t run into too many hackers.  Playing with friends just make it less boring since randoms usually drop out immediately after getting downed, I can still win but I have to try so hard or third party the last team super hard since it’s literally a 3v1.

Okay that was a really long tangent, but it felt good to write!  I saw smelly kaimtime sitting right in front of me looking like a total DIVA as usual, and I threw the stalest snacks into their lap which I hope they LOVED.  After all of this, I went to the Cantina with Bery Lucky Clue and Axel where I got a very Rare piece of artwork done by Axel (I posted it on twitter).  It was a FoxPeace done on ballpoint pen on water damaged line paper, a perfection imo.

In a surprising twist, I actually went to sleep (after rewatching Us at the $4 movie theater)!  I had two weird as heck nightmares about studying for exams and my dad asking me about BLFC (because he did that like 2 MFFs ago?? lmao).  I finally got to meet CrowFluff and Aspekt, and saw Kaara and radruler all at the same time at Starbucks since I think they just came back from a DEVIOUS DISCORD PLOT at Raising Canes??  Radruler ordered this hellish drink since he used to be a Starbucks barista, he ordered the largest sized cup and literally only got refresher concentrate.  If you have never had starbucks refreshers before, the concentrate is this mass of liquid with fruity flavorings and made up entirely of pure caffeine and sugar, I took ONE SIP and wanted to die.  To compare in reference, the refresher concentrate is maybe 1/8 of the drink and it’s diluted with water and ice.  Although I guess he was going to use it as a mixer so that’s pretty fair, it would make some fire drinks tbh, but he definitely just drinks it plain like that sometimes because I’ve seen it!!

After I split off from the Discord Krew, I went back to the Dealer’s Den to hang out a bit more with my art friendos.  I went to stigmata and Sasha’s talk about furry stereotypes because they always have awesome talks, I was surprised how PACKED the room was!  Their talks are usually pretty crowded but I came like 15 minutes early and there were 3 chairs left, I think 20 people were sitting/standing around the room to attend the talk.  The talk was fantastic as usual, I stayed around for about two hours but the Q&A was running a bit too long, so I met up with dingables and bery for a bit and then went with radruler to the foxsky/nonstoppup set since I’ve never heard him live before, it was an extremely chaotic experience, I honestly don’t think videos or streams can capture the amount of energy or bass in those sets LOL.  The bass is so loud it feels like it’s taking over your heartbeat and you’re being attacked by music, and we WEREN’T EVEN NEAR THE STAGE.  I loved all the musical trolling that was going on, but I think it’s literally in his name to be a nonstoppup, every time you think there’s going to be a break, the music suddenly speeds up to 180+ bpm.  I haven’t listened to hardstyle/gabber in a long time, but it was an impressive mix, my favorite part of the set was when he dropped into caramelldansen mixed with Who Let the Dogs Out?

After the concert, rad and I went back up to the ~ Discord Room ~ and we ordered bougie cheeseburgers from ubereats, the burgers were like standard bay area/hawaii prices so they were pretty good.  Afterwards rad came back downstairs with me and we honestly just chilled and talked from like 3 am to 8 am lmao.  It was great, I seem to always have chill talks at blfc with people.

BLFC will definitely always be my favorite convention just because of their arcade, I heard tokyoattack at FWA was even better so who knows maybe I’ll try to make FWA next year idk, I hate east coast cons because uwu me islander, me popsicle on east coast.  I really didn’t plan on traveling at all this year because I wanted to save up some money to build a stream PC for a 2 PC setup, but idk I really needed this.  I’m too lazy to proofread this, so sorry if anything is excluded or too lewd or too ranty.  I didn’t sleep and I’m typing this up in the Notes app on my phone.  I had a fun con experience, and I hope whoever is even reading this far enjoyed at least some part of my experience.
