Tristan made for the bridge and met Urgan with his spear, thrusting at him with such force that it snapped; and as soon as he had made his thrust, cursed Urgan was upon him with his pole and he struck at him so avidly that, but for the blow overshooting its mark, Tristan would never have survived it, though he had been made of bronze. But Urgan's craving to get at him aided his escape, for the giant had come in too close and aimed the sweep of his blow too far to Tristan's rear. And now, before the gruesome man could withdraw his pole, Tristan feinted and pierced him in the eye – there was no denying he had pierced him in his other eye! Urgan now lashed out like the blinded man he was, and there was such a rain of blows that Tristan ran to cover out of range and left him to blunder about, striking with his left hand. Eventually it happened that Urgan stepped so near to the end of the bridge that Tristan ran up at speed and put his utmost strength into this exploit: he raced up to Urgan and, turning him with both hands from the bridge to where he must pitch headlong, thrust him down so that his monstrous bulk was shattered on the rock.
