- Homework (to start in class): p. 181 practice 7 (all)
- part A
- 3 who takes care of children; who = doctor; no comma (it defines the type of doctor)
- 4 who is our neighbor; who = Dr. Jones; commas before and after the adjective clause
- 5 who studied; who = students; no commas
- 6 who studied together; who = Gabriela and Trinh; commas before and after the adjective clause
- 7 which is a holiday; which = Monday; comma before the adjective clause
- 8 that is especially fun for children; that = holiday; no commas
- ---
- p. 182 practice 8A- Put the adjective clauses into the correct independent clauses, and add commas where necessary.
- 1 They gave their boss, who was celebrating his 50th birthday, a Rolex watch.
- 2 The purse that is lying under the chair is hers.
- 3 Alice, who is my best friend, moved to New York last month.
- 4 She is living in an apartment which has a view of Central Park.
- 5 Uncle John, who owns a yacht and a jet, is a billionaire.
- 6 A person who has love has everything.
- “an apartment” and “an apartment which has a view of Central Park” do NOT mean the same thing, so the view of central park is defining information and we can’t use a comma.
- “Alice’s apartment” and “Alice’s apartment, which has a view of Central Park” DO mean the same thing (if Alice has one apartment), so we use a comma for the extra information
- ---

- 10 Mr. and Mrs. Haddad, who thought they had arranged a good future for their daughter, don’t understand why she ran away.
