  1. VPS vs shared hosting
  2. Folks, I was running my own VPS server from DO and Linode, and everything was working fine. I decided to switch to website hosting (cPanel), and I have to say the performance is awful.
  3. ++++++++++++++

  17. I run a few small sites on the cPanel hosting, but just looking at my google webmaster the response time has spiked. I've spoken to the hosting company, but they claim everything is working just fine.
  18.
  19. Look at the screenshot, you can see the spike and I'm sure it will affect ranking as well.

  22. I'm thinking to go back to VPS, but really don't feel like managing it manually and I'm not a developer or sys admin to be able to manage it properly.
  23.
  24. Would you recommend using one of the free control panels?
  25.
  26. The main reason why I switched from VPS to Shared Hosting is to have SMTP server as I must be able to send emails from each domain for contact us form and etc.
  27.
  28. yes you can use free control panel
  29. e.g. centos web panel,

  33. Dedicated Server [USA]
  34.
  35. I seriously doubt that's caused by Cpanel. More likely the network or server it's on is busier than it was on that VPS. What control panel was on the VPS (if any)?
  36. Move over, coffee, this is a job for alcohol!
  37.
  38. @bear, i had no control panel on my VPS and it was working great. Just my limited knowledge on sys admin side and mail configuration lead me to use a cPanel hosting that caused to the issues.
  39. Def an issue with the server of the hosting company - it's way overloaded.
  40.
  41.
  42. Thank you @mhostingin
  43.
  44. It is not cPanel, but it is the fact that you migrated your websites from a virtual server to shared hosting. You downgraded the resources.

  47. I never doubted it and my original question / asking for a recommendation was abou VPS and some type of free control panel.
  48.
  49. My main concern is mail server(s), I want to be able to send emails from the website domain. Basically, if I run 5 websites on the same VPS, I want to be able to send an email from;
  50. example@domain.com
  51. example@abc.com
  52. example@regular.com
  53. example@whatever.com
  54. example@foo.com
  55.
  56. Creating single SMTP srever will be very beneficial - any assistance is greatly appreciated.

  68. You can install a trial version of cPanel and create email addresses.
  69.
  70. Once the trial is over, your websites and emails will still continue to work. You will not be able to access cPanel though.

  75. Interesting - I didn't know that.
  76.
  77. What happens when I need to manage the DB or add additional domains?
  78.
  79. You can do anything with root access. You can not use cPanel and its features though.
  80.
  81. phpMyAdmin should work fine without cPanel too.
  82.
  83. It could be CloudLinux slowing down processes. Check resource usages and see. Also is the host a EIG brand or has any reputation on here?

  87.
  88. You can install CWP and they have free version working perfect if you don't want to pay whm/cpanel licence.
  89. Is good idea as they said about trying first the free 15 days trial licence, but later sure you will need to manage something your server but no more choice, only root acces and writing many commands instead of buttons click
  90.
  91. Forget cpanel...i have used both ISPConfig and Virtualmin and they are both very very good management platforms with gpl and paid versions.
  92. At present i run Virtualmin gpl on my servers in preference to ISPConfig mainly because of built in filemanager and its extensive array of control features.
  93. Having said that for ease of use with a simpler interrface and strong help forum ISPConfig is probably the go for you, however, no file manager (workaround is sftp)
  94. Please note that both need to be installed on a new fresh instance. Its best to follow their guides on exactly what is expected when creating one...failure to do this will result in problems.

  105. Creating single SMTP srever will be very beneficial - any assistance is greatly appreciated.
  106. If email is critical move it off the web server onto a dedicated mail platform such as Office365 or Google Apps.
  107. This will free up the resources on the web server for serving websites only and mail will be on a load balanced cluster with global availability managed by a team that only do email servers.
  108. Particularly with Wordpress its CPU intensive and actually on this as well, if you really wanted to you could move the Databases to a database platform such as Amazon RDS you can read more at https://aws.amazon.com/rds/ this obviously will depend on the number of visitors to your websites you will probably get away with having the databases on the same server as the rest of the site once email is migrated.
  109. Also making sure that all sites are in their own accounts helps with this as well, so I would suggest a Cpanel VPS with mail disabled or a multi site / reseller account.
  110. The main advantage with having each site in its own account is that they can be backed up and stored individually and if one gets suspended for whatever reason it doesn't take all you're sites offline.

  127. I went the other way. Recently migrated from shared reseller hosting to DigitalOcean VPS. And loving the speed increase. What prevented you from setting a MTA such as postfix on your VPS and sending emails?
  128.
  129. As for free control panels, while I'm currently managing the VPS by hand, I plan to take a look at Vesta or Froxlor in the near future. Or perhaps fork out the money for cPanel.
