Quicksilver vs Sentinels

“You monsters! I should have known this would happen. Well, no more! I no longer stand with you against my fellow mutants!” Quicksilver removed his comlink and smashed it to the ground, launching himself at the Sentinel before it hit. The Sentinel was still crouched over to collect its capture spheres, so when the superfast mutant leaped up and kicked it in the chest, it was knocked onto its back. Quicksilver rebounded from the impact, came down on his feet, and swept past the gunmen, knocking them aside with great force and taking their weapons from them. He then charged the Sentinel with guns blazing, delaying only for the brief moment it took him to reload their clips at accelerated speed.
But the Sentinel was able to withstand the weapons fire and was already clambering back to its ungainly bipedal stance. “UNDER ATTACK FROM MUTANT SUBJECT DESIGNATED QUICKSILVER,” the Sentinel transmitted to Taforne. “REASSESS HOSTTTE/NONHOSTILE. STATUS?”
It was tempting, but the mutant was reacting out of impulsive anger and was doing no serious harm as yet. Certainly he should be disciplined, but Taforne would do so by the book, rather than unleashing the Sentinels upon him. “Negative. Subject’s nonhostile status remains in effect.”
“INSUFFICIENT RESPONSE. SUBJECT’S ACTIONS DEMONSTRATE ONGOING HOSTILITY. REQUEST AUTHORIZATION TO REASSESS STATUS OF SUBJECT QUICKSILVER.”
“I decide what response is sufficient! Do as you are commanded!”
“COMMAND PRIORTY IS DETENTION OF HOSTILE NONHUMAN SUBJECTS. ACTIONS OF SUBJECT QUICKSILVER ARE COMPROMISING THIS UNIT’S STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. THIS UNIT’S ABILITY TO FULFILL COMMAND PRIORITY IS COMPROMISED BY SUBJECT’S ATTACK. THEREFORE “SUBJECT’S HOSTITLE/NONHOSTTLE STATUS MUST BE REASSESSED TO FULFILL COMMAND PRIORITY.”
Was this machine presuming to lecture Taforne on procedure? Normally he would have been happy to butt horns with someone who challenged his authority, but this was simply a piece of hardware acting up according to some glitch in its human-designed soft-ware, and the defense leader could not be bothered. This was a distraction that needed to be ended. “Very well. You are instructed to disarm and detain subject Quicksilver using minimum necessary force. The subject is not to be injured. Confirm!”
“CONFIRMING NEW PRIORTY: NONLETHAL DETENTION OF SUBJECT QUICKSILVER.”
“Good.” Not that it was as easy as all that, for the mutant was exceedingly fast. The Sentinels’ brains could process information faster, but their speed of movement was limited by their bulk and their humanoid form. But a second Sentinel had by now arrived to close off the other end of the alley, trapping the mutant. Working together, the two robots were able to anticipate the mutant’s evasive movements, so that one could herd him toward where the other would strike. When he attempted to run up the wall of one of the buildings limning the alley, a Sentinel blasted it to pieces, and Quicksilver was forced to dodge back down into the alley. But the second Sentinel was already spraying the surface of the alley with low-friction foam, causing Quicksilver to lose his footing and leaving him vulnerable for the first Sentinel to nab him with a capture sphere.
