How to solder

Tips:

  1. Never clean the solder tip with sandpaper. You want to keep the chrome plating on that. Once that chrome plating has a hole, your tip will disintegrate in a short time.
  2. I use a pot of brass sponge with resin to clean the tip after the iron is hot. The smoke that comes off the tip from the resin also tells me when the tip is hot enough to solder.
  3. I clean the tip every time I turn on the soldering iron. Then I put a little solder on it.
  4. I always use flux on every part I solder, even if the solder has a resin core. Usually there is not enough resin in the solder.

How to solder:

  1. Put flux on both ends you want to solder.
  2. Heat up the iron. Now wipe off the tip.
  3. Tinning each part to solder: Heat the part that has flux. On the side of the part opposite the iron, apply the solder. The part should be hot enough to melt the solder. Once the solder is melted this process will take less than a second so pull away the solder iron when the solder is melted on there.
  4. Now put solder on the other part with the flux.
  5. Apply heat shrink on one end, slide it away from the joint for now.
  6. Now connect the two pieces you tinned, maybe with helping hands, and heat them up. The solder should flow together.
