- Chara & Frisk: Video Games
- (Requested by Anonymous) ((way back in september))
- In which Frisk shows Chara some video games and have a good time together (Chara is depicted as falling into the underground around the late 40s and early 50s. Still young after being brought back due to some soul events or whatnot. I hope you enjoy.)
- "Greetings, Frisk." Chara said simply after opening the door to her bedroom, seeing the other human sitting with her legs crossed in front of a television and an odd looking device with several cables strewn all about.
- Frisk smiles at Chara and motions her over, then turns on the TV while Chara sits next to her.
- "So, what is it exactly that you were so excited to show me?"
- Frisk grabbed one of the devices with a cable attached and handed it to Chara. It was grey in color, with black outlines and red and black buttons.
- It looked quite odd at first, but once she held it in her hands, it felt quite nice and sleek. Almost natural to hold such a thing.
- "Interesting… what is this device used for?"
- Frisk then tells her that the device is called a controller, connected to the console, which is also connected to the television.
- "I… see. And all of these connected devices lead to…?"
- Frisk's smile grows, pressing a button, turning on the gaming console, as she briefly describes it as.
- Chara looks on in awe as it loads up, with Frisk loading up something called Popeye.
- "...Popeye?" She quietly says out loud, moving closer to the screen as Frisk quietly giggles.
- "As… as in the comic? Frisk, are you going to show me a comic?"
- Frisk shook her head and began to tell her all about the basics on a video game, and how she wanted to surprise her with something familiar that she would enjoy.
- Chara smiles slightly, "You would be correct in assuming that I would like Popeye… especially his comics." Her smile grew a little as she thought more fondly of the past.
- Frisk giggled a little as she told Chara to press start on the controller. Once she did so, she explained the controls to her as she watched the little opening scene, in which Olive Oyl, the red girl began to throw hearts down at Popeye.
- Chara began to control Popeye, moving around catching the hearts while Bluto began to move around and chase him. She first began by moving on the first platform, letting the hearts come to her and moving from one side to another. Then, one of the red hearts began to move away from her and she moved Popeye down to the second platform, right in front of Bluto, making her lose her first life.
- Chara frowned as Popeye respawned, "Well isn't that a bite… worthless brute."
- She then began playing once more, getting more used to the controls as she moved lower to catch the hearts and avoiding Bluto. At the same time, she also began to learn to use the stairs on the side of the map. Chara was actually holding her own, until she saw another character appear from the screen and start throwing projectiles at Popeye.
- Chara moved down a platform, but was taken by surprise when Bluto suddenly fell down on Popeye, taking her extra life.
- "Hmmm…" She grunted, "Tricks up his sleeve, I see…"
- After restarting once more, she began to more easily move around the arena, moving up and down platforms with relative ease, dodging attacks by moving up or down, being made easier once she discovered how to punch, allowing her to destroy any projectiles that came her way.
- Eventually, right before she got enough hearts to beat the level, she accidentally walked towards the end of one of the platforms, in which she picked up a spinach can power up.
- "Oh! Golly, did I just pick up a spinach can for him?" She asked as she moved around faster, chuckling a little bit at Popeye's movement animation, as well as noticing that Bluto was now running from Popeye.
- Frisk then told Chara that Popeye was now invincible for the duration of the theme that was now playing and that she could take Bluto out of the game for a short amount of time.
- Chara did just that, simply walking Popeye up to the ugly brute and touching him, knocking him out of the map and giving her bonus points.
- "Ha! I have always wanted to do that to him. Ugly beast…" She smirked, jumping up and taking her time to collect the final hearts, completing the first stage just as the power up went away.
- "Stage One complete… one? Are there more, Frisk?"
- Frisk nodded, telling her that there were three stages that repeated with increasing difficulty, with 9 rounds in total.
- "Increasing difficulty, you say? Well, it is quite fun so far…"
- The second stage loaded in, only instead of her collecting hearts, she was now tasked to collect musical notes. Her performance on this level was similar to the first one, losing one life but being able to complete it, feeling quite proud of herself as Frisk cheered her on and congratulated her. But on the third level is where she lost her final life and decided that it was enough for now.
- "Those damned vultures… if it was not for them I could have easily knocked Bluto's socks off again."
- "Nevertheless, Frisk. That was an absolute blast to play. Thank you for showing me…"
- "...Oh? Yet another one of these games to show me? In the living room? Very well, partner. Let us go then."
- Frisk smiled and the two girls walked downstairs, heading to the living room. There was a pretty comfy looking couch, along with a significantly bigger and more modern looking television, as well as a console that looked somewhat similar to the one they had just used, only bigger, sleeker and overall more… modern looking.
- "Is this it? Asriel's console, hmm… I'm certain he would not mind." She smirked as Frisk turned the TV and console on once more, handing her a black controller.
- This one had just as many buttons, but it looked more organized and was much more comfortable to handle.
- The console's overlay was really modern and easy on the eyes. But what really caught Chara's attention was the game Frisk was loading up.
- Cuphead.
- Chara wanted to ask a few questions, but decided to wait as Frisk loaded up the game. As soon as it finished, it started up a cutscene that really took her back to her times.
- The entire art and design was identical to those of the cartoons she used to watch, yet it looked even better. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. And she was about to play something like this?
- She almost couldn't believe it.
- Frisk smiled happily when she saw the grin on Chara's face. It only grew at the mention of the two protagonists making a deal with the devil and losing, then bartering to collect the souls of others to save their own skins.
- "Dealing with the devil, huh?" She smirked, giggling just a bit.
- Then began the tutorial, her interest and excitement only growing as she saw all the animations and read every piece of dialogue. Frisk led the way once they got out to the map, explaining to her the basic mechanics of the game, eventually making it to the practice stage.
- Chara and Frisk now played together, moving across the stage. Surprisingly enough, Chara was holding her own quite well, jumping all around and landing hits with ease, as well as avoiding most attacks, with Frisk being the one struggling more than her.
- "I can't believe I'm playing a cartoon…" She grinned as they made it to the end of the stage, having only taken a single hit. Frisk complimented her on her incredible skill for someone who has never played such a game before.
- "I suppose I may have a knack for this game… I do believe I am having… fun." She smiled.
- They then move to the second stage, which proved to be a little more challenging, but Chara still moved on with great skill and quick movements, going through the moving platform section easily, until she got to the final mini-boss, which was made difficult only due to the platforms below her being destroyed due to the boss's attacks. But in the end, they prevailed, even with Frisk struggling to keep up.
- "Bravo!!!" The announcer said as they passed the second stage.
- "Bravo indeed!" Chara responded with genuine glee, loving the music that played once they returned to the overworld.
- "The music in this game is absolutely stellar as well… exactly what you would hear back then!"
- The two girls then moved onto their very first boss battle; Goopy Le Grande.
- "Good day for a swell battle! It's on!" The announcer said.
- "Oh yes indeed…" She chuckled darkly as the battle began, Chara moving around first to avoid the blue enemy's bounces, finding it easy as pie at first, until the second attack caught her completely by surprise, the blue ball extending towards her suddenly and costing her a hit point.
- Yet she didn't seem upset. Not even in the slightest. She seemed quite happy, laughing at the animation.
- By the time the boss did the same attack again though, Chara had known now to expect it, ducking her character and avoiding the attack, all while not letting up on the trigger.
- It then flipped a coin and looked at Cuphead with a malicious smile, while Frisk was trying hard to collect the three question marks over its head.
- Once she did, the boss began jumping, this time higher and at a faster rate, hitting Frisk twice while Chara dodged it all, even the boxing punch attack, which she simply ducked for on instinct.
- Chara herself actually ducked a bit, causing Frisk to giggle as she was focusing so hard.
- Eventually, the boss battle goes on its third and final stage, a massive tombstone coming down from the sky to replace the original boss. It then began to slide in the foreground, causing Chara to frantically move around since she couldn't tell the difference at first, if it sliding was an attack or not.
- It was only when the tombstone slammed itself down on Cuphead that she figured out what to do, at the cost of her second of three hitpoints.
- "Golly! I see now, I see…!" She exclaimed as she moved back and forth with the tombstone, repeatedly shooting it and just barely dodging every time.
- It was only until she used her super ability that she defeated the first boss however.
- "Knockout!!!"
- "Ha ha ha! Yes!" She cheered to herself, laughing at the silly animation the defeated tombstone was now playing.
- It then cut to a rating page, giving her a C score overall, but that didn't matter. She was thrilled.
- "Golly Frisk, this… this may truly be. The best thing you have shown me yet. Out of anything else. This is one of the few things I have always dreamed of doing."
- "Being a part of something this much fun. I never thought I would see the day."
- "...Thank you. Frisk." She said with a genuine smile. Frisk could only hug her tight, an act that Chara wasn't really comfortable with, but would gladly tolerate it this one time.
- Especially if it meant playing more of this wonderful game.
- And so they did, playing it late into the night together, until they eventually passed out together on the couch, controllers in hand.
