- Barred by Oregon law from seeing her original birth certificate, the 52-year-old Corvallis woman spent years coaxing an adoptive relative to tell her the name of her birth mother. When the two women were finally reunited, [Barbara] Casali-Mingus' mother was dying of cervical cancer and urged her daughter to get checked. It turned out Casali-Mingus had the disease, too.
- "She saved my life," said Casali-Mingus, who had an operation and has since recovered. "Everybody has a right to their medical records."
- Now Casali-Mingus and hundreds of other adoptees are trying to persuade voters to make Oregon the third state to open adoption records to people older than 21.
