  17. A 51-year-old man brandishing two rifles was shot and killed by Issaquah police Saturday after he opened fire on officers near Clark Elementary School late Saturday morning.
  18.
  19. Shortly before 11:30 a.m., police began receiving calls about a man who had abandoned his car in the middle of Front Street at the south edge of downtown Issaquah, according to King County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart.
  20.
  21. The man was walking down Front Street, the main thoroughfare, near Newport Way, carrying two rifles, Urquhart said.
  22.
  23. The man, whose identify was not immediately available, pointed his weapons at people, but did not fire them, as he walked about ½ mile to the school.
  24.
  25. When Issaquah Police confronted him on a service road leading to the school, he reportedly got on the ground and began shooting.
  26.
  27. Some shots were aimed at officers, but others appeared to be random, Urquhart said.
  28.
  29. Issaquah police returned fire, striking the man several times.
  30.
  31. There were no other injuries.
  32.
  33. A football game was underway at adjacent Issaquah High School. Players were rushed from the field after the shooting began. There were reports of spectators and players taking refuge under the stadium stands.
  34.
  35. Police don't yet know the gunman's motive. The sheriff's office is investigating the incident because Issaquah police fired the fatal shots.
  36.
  37. More than three hours after the shooting, the streets around the school remained barricaded and residents were kept for entering their homes.
  38.
  39. Martin Donnelly, who lives on Front Street just south of Newport Way, said he saw the gunman pass through his backyard, carrying the two rifles and head up a wooded slope toward the school. He appeared to be wearing green hunting gear.
  40.
  41. Donnelly said he phoned police and heard shots two or three minutes later.
  42.
  43. He and his wife, Barbara, moved into the house just two months ago.
  44.
  45. "We thought this was a nice, quiet neighborhood where nothing happens." Barbara Donnelly said.
