  1. DIFFERENT: a story of growing up unique
  2. ----
  3. >You rush upstairs with your newfound treasure clutched between your hands to your loft bedroom.
  4. >Hearing your mom and dad giggle together while you dash off causes you to trip a little and stumble clumsily on your feet.
  5. "O-ow.."
  6. >Upon reaching the top of the staircase, you burst through your bedroom door and carefully place your prize onto your desk and look at it with absolute awe in your eyes.
  7. >You've waited so long for this.
  8. >So many birthdays, so many Christmases, and it's finally yours.
  9. >Your very own diary.
  10. >Now.. What to write as the first entry..
  11.
  12. >Dear Diary,
  13. >My name is Eve, but that's not really important I guess.
  14. >I'm eight years old today, and I live in a cabin in the woods on the edge of a town called Ponyville with my mom and my dad.
  15. >My dad built our house for us, and he spends a lot of time in the woods picking things for us to eat, and catching things for us to eat and make clothing and blankets and lots of neat stuff from
  16. >My mom sort of just keeps our house clean and helps me learn about stuff. She's super smart like that!
  17. >It's sometimes hard when it's just the three of us though.. I get a bit sad sometimes that there's no other kids for me to play with or talk to.
  18. >There is a school in Ponyville, and there's lots of other kids who go there, and I really want to be able to go there with them.. But I'm different.
  19. >Dad says that most of the other people around are either ponies or dragons or a mix of the two.. And I'm not even that.
  20. >My mom is a dragon, and my dad is something called a human, and those are super rare where we live because.. Well.. They don't really live where we live at all.
  21. >My dad is the only *complete* human that anyone knows about, and that makes him pretty special.. But that also makes me special too he says, because I'm a one of a kind too..
  22. >I have my moms legs, wings, tail and eyes, but the rest of me is human like my dad.. So I look strange, and I'd probably scare the other kids, and that's why I stay home to learn with mom.
  23. >I don't want lots of friends.
  24. >Even if I am ugly or weird to look at, I could be a really good friend to somebody!
  25. >I could show them all of the flowers in my books or we could catch water bugs, or we could brush eachothers hair or.. Something?
  26. >That probably won't happen soon though.. Mom always says if you wait long enough good things come along in unexpected ways, and that means that I have lots of waiting to do.
  27. >She says that's how she met my dad, and he's nice.. Even if he is a bit weird sometimes.. So maybe..
  28. >I think that's okay for the first page of this diary, I hope I have lots of stories to tell you very soon.
  29. >Eve
  30.
  31. >As you close the cover of your little book you beam brightly at it before picking it up and sliding it into your drawer gently.
  32. >Today's been the best birthday ever.
  33. >You've always wanted someone to share your thoughts with, and a diary is sort of the next best thing to having a friend.
  34. >Standing up from your desk, you slide the oak chair along the floorboards of your room with a slight *screech* sound that sends a shiver up your back causing your wings to flutter.
  35. "Brr!"
  36. >Gosh, you hate when that happens.
  37. >Dad always says someone's walking over your grave when that happens, whatever that means.
  38. >Then mom usually gives him a little smack on the back of the head for it for some reason.
  39. >They're pretty funny to watch when they're together sometimes.
  40. >You're absolutely pooped from today.
  41. >Feeling your eyes getting heavy, you let out a little yawn and climb into your bed, kicking away your covers before wrapping them around you like a cuccoon of warmth and waiting for your dad to come and tell you your bedtime story.
  42. >*knock knock*
  43. >Right on time.
  44. "Come in!"
  45. >"Hey sweetie, you ready for bed?"
  46. "Mhm!"
  47. >He let's himself through the doorway and sits down next to you on the bed while you clamber over your sheets to get at him for a cuddle.
  48. >"So.. What kind of story would my little Angel like to hear tonight?"
  49. "Umm.. Can you tell me about Earth again..?"
  50. >As if he even has to ask. He knows that stories of how different things were back where he comes from are your favourite.
  51. >You think your favourite Earth thing might be cars or planes or maybe motorcycles.. It'd be really fun to be able to go that fast.
  52. >Your dad just let's out a giggle at the zoned out look you have plastered across your face before saying "Sure thing" and reciting one of the many tales from his past as you rest with his arm around you, holding you comfortably in place as you fall sound asleep to the comforting sound of his voice.
  53. **/the end of part one/**
