  1. [22:27] In the middle of his bout with Okoto, Zoldak noticed a particularly large fellow leaving his house. Charging in right afterwards to check the chest he keeps out in the open for purposes and finding it haphazardly smashed open, it doesn't take a genius to put two and two together.
  2.  
  3. As soon as the lightning fox demon begins to stride out of the trading city once more, its path is blocked as the dark-suited merchant maneuvers his way in front of their path like some kind of defensive tackle. When Enmerkar finally comes to a stop, there is already a mana pistol drawn on trained right at their skull.

  5. "So. Any particular reason you just broke into a chest within private property upon Thalassian territory."
  6.  
  7. His words flow from the burnished metal veil upon his face with a distinct tinny ring. There is no anger or rage apparent in the man's speech. It is quite cold and emotionless.

  9. "You are aware of the penalty for such actions around here, are you not."

  22. [22:30] "Yes!" he proclaimed aloud. "It was a chest out here. I go through the abandoned houses and sell everything I find inside. I was not aware that home was owned by Crafthold, or I would not have broken into the chest."

  24. The fox demon stared straight forward. Clearly, either he didn't understand he had done something wrong, or he didn't really comprehend the gravity of what had been done in the first place. Either way, he watched the mana pistol patiently.

  26. "I do not intend to do harm to Crafthold. That is why I risk my life selling ore," Enmerkar added. "You also have a chest in the other house, however after realizing the first was a trap, I figured both were maintained and thus did not break into the second."
  27.  
  28. "It is the chest in the back of your main 'bird cage' house. The runes are expired. I have taken nothing from that one," the Kaor added. "I assure I mean no harm in the things I do. I am simply curious, and I like making the human medalcoins. That is all."
  29.  
  30. "If a fight would make you feel better, then we are free to conduct one in this area, as it is outside the city. But I do not intend to steal from Crafthold or its citizens, if that is the subject of discussion!"

  32. The fox politely bowed its head, six tails curling over top in turn. They continued to swish thereafter, each heavier than the central torso of the demon.

  64. [22:38] The pistol remains unflinching, it's muzzle not even swaying with movement as Zoldak remains suspended in the air like a puppet on string.

  66. "You are the second person to use that excuse. So. Tell me. What made you think that house was abandoned. What made you think it did not belong to Crafthold when we have a fortification right there."

  68. A finger slowly and mechanically raises to point at the tower of Kas'chei, it's rooftop ablaze with numerous bonfires.

  70. "I could let you off easy. I could give you a second chance and tell you to never do it again. But I am tired of letting people off easy. They never actually learn."

  72. The man's head cocks at the many-tailed demon fox, the light from the top of the tower dancing across its reflective surface.
  73.  
  74. "So. Here's an idea. From now on, you are only permitted within the city on business. You are barred from the cave, as you should have already been. Spend your time in Gaiar, where you belong."
  75.  
  76. The pistol lowers, just slightly, as the faceless man continues to buzz.
  77.  
  78. "And. As you suggested. We may fight, if you are unsatisfied with these terms. That is your prerogative."

  82. [22:39] Icarus crosses his arms and cocks and eyebrow. His shades flash with the reflection of the blaze atop the very tower he himself works out of.

  101. [22:43] And-.. now it felt appropriate to intervene regarding this all, Dan couldn't help but feel sick of incidents like this in time of war.

  103. "Zoldak. Enough. I don't think ya' know who the fuck ya' are- He certainly deserves punishment, but since when 'ave you dictated who has access to the caves. Or business."

  109. For once, scorn could be heard in the man's voice as he spoken- perhaps spurred by another unrelated talk of the past.

  111. "And.. where he belongs? Do ya' forget that Crafthold is still attached ta' aetherius?"

  113. In truth, he didn't object to a good old fashion beatdown- but dictations of the general business of Crafthold didn't sit rightwith him.

  117. [22:47] Vincent was ready to probably take the blame for little ole’ demon, for he never really comes to Crafthold. But, luckily it seems like infighting was to occur, so he stays off to the side, just watching for now.

  121. [22:47] The Kitsune's gaze was relentless. It never once left Zoldak as he spoke, almost as if urging him to say the right thing.

  123. But when he speaks the word he does? There's an obvious frown that pulls her thin lips downwards. "I feel the need to remind you, Zoldak," Ru's voice carried bitterly after Dan's own. "That Enmerkar is but just a hatchling. A toddler in human years. Naïve. Idiotic." Her crimson gaze bounces, falling upon the big ol' fox demon.

  125. And then her lips only further pull into a distasteful sneer. Dan had said most of what was on her mind.

  127. "You will teach him a proper lesson. You will make sure he learns, Zoldak. If he does not? By all means, I will gut the Kaor myself." Ru's eyes narrowed upon the masked man. "And if you've further issues with the son of Illaron, then I highly suggest you take that up with him."

  131. [22:48] Ohtli whispers something.
  132. [22:49] Farin blinks. Coming into this, a situation dealing with Enmerkar and something like this? He didn't have a full grasp, but whatever was going on. He's sure that Kestrel was not going to be very. . happy, given that she was taking the time to try and get the demon kin to see reason with certain actions.

  139. [22:51] The fox demon stared forward unblinkingly, the eyes behind its 'mask' (or skull- it was difficult to tell) failing to flick this way or that. Instead, they were trained wholesomely on Zoldak, watching him absently.

  141. "That is not your decision to make, merchant," the Kaor proclaimed. "If I am to be banished from this extension of Aetherius, then it will be brought up to Iosefka first, and Tragedy second. If they both deem it a valid reason, then that is that."
  142.  
  143. For once, Enmerkar looked to the right, his stare only broken from Zoldak once Dan deigned to speak his mind aloud.
  144.  
  145. "... Yes. If penance is decided, I would accept that without question," Enmerkar replied. "Curiosity is an evil thing in a city of crafters. But the more pertinent question is what you will do if this is decided, Zoldak Lelhua? I will accept my punishment as it comes."

  147. Ru's words are left behind him, either because of the discomfort they cause or because the demon was attempting to keep himself composed. Either way, his eyes remained glued to Zoldak.

  149. "I would ask that my punishment remains purely in the form of combat, though. If I am barred from the cave, I will no longer be able to enter Crafthold's battles due to a lack of funding. I would not want to not be able to help versus the vampiric menace."

  156. [23:04] While the body language and tone of Zoldak was calm and calculated before, upon Dan's words the gentleman's torso violently jerks in the direction of the pacted. A sharp screech of metal against metal rings out, as the air surrounding him begins to shudder violently with energetic particles.

  158. "I am an Authority, Dan. I am the LAW around here. If you had actually kept in tune with anything, you would have known my free-status was agreed upon by all high-ranking Thalassian officials so that I would be able to continue doing business and gathering intelligence in enemy territory."

  160. The pistol, by this point, is not anywhere close to being pointed at Enmerkar. Instead if is held towards Dan, the barrel lowered just slightly to be aiming in the rough direction of his legs.

  162. "Beyond that, everything north of the river. This land you stand on. This all belongs to the Lelhua family. This is our soil. Our home."
  163.  
  164. An agitated whine continues to emanate from the man's veil as its eyeless gaze seems to hone in on the horned servant of Illaron.
  165.  
  166. "Gaiar is a world away. It sits empty and decaying. Why don't you do something about that, Dan. Why don't you do something about the Huang patrols that keep pushing deeper and deeper into the so-called capital's territory."
  167.  
  168. The pistol, once so steady and unintimidating, more like a prop piece than anything else, starts to shake in the tight grip of the merchant.
  169.  
  170. "This is my city. It was my city when you wandered in here as just another Atl tribesman. And it will remain my city. The fact that you challenge my ability to make rulings here must be an act of willful ignorance on your part."
  171.  
  172. His attention is finally pulled towards Ru, her words being far less confrontational. The buzzing noise dies down, gradually, and it looks as though Zoldak takes a single deep breath before that simulated voice continues to 'speak'.

  174. "Fine. You want me to say a very simple phrase. And you asked nicely. So I will say it."
  175.  
  176. The man's head swivels back to the fox demon.
  177.  
  178. "'Don't do it again'. But, you are still barred from the caves. I don't know who gave you permission. Only the Warden or an Authority can, and I don't believe any of them would do such. And as for your assistance, well. I did not see anyone from Aetherius in the last battle. They have not been present on patrols. It has been my men and women, and them alone."

  180. Turning back to Ru, the pistols is slowly re-holstered. A curt nod is sent in the wizened kitsune's direction.

  182. "It is not my job to train this demon. Gaiar can handle their own. If I must settle things, I will settle them as Thalassia does."

  186. [23:06] One, gloved hand bashfully rose to catch Zoldak's attention. She had no idea what was going on here, and decided not to get involved. The woman simply wanted to provide a tidbit of information.

  194. [23:07] One of the many lessons Icarus had been taught by his father was to not be a thief for the thief is the lowly, pitiable counterpart to the fair businessman. Already he was fairly disinclined to offer the demon any sort of reprieve from the situation and Icarus felt the need to even go check the chests within the tower to see if the fox had actually stolen from him as well.

  196. But as Dan and Ru seemed to immediately chime in with some choice words for Zoldak, the little Lelhua couldn't help but squint at them from behind his shades.

  198. 'What would Leland do?' echoes through his mind. He'd seen his elder brother spar the Chieftain Sibri recently and save Zoldak himself, there was no one else who Icarus looked up to quite as much.
  199.  
  200. "This is where I run my business, it's where Leland ran his. I wonder if I were to go look in my tower if I'd be missing anything." The shades shift to the demon. "Would I be?" he asked simply.

  202. The little merchant pulls his brother's staff of his back and holds it in his right hand. Where flesh meets wood there is a soft, azure glow, and the kid tilts his head.

  206. [23:07] Ohtli whispers something.

  211. [23:14] Even still, the fox sat pretty- wielding a tiny snicker that seemed to tease those that watched. It was a strange thing for a bony mask to wear, but no less was it worn all the same... despite Enmerkar acting almost wholesomely oblivious to the fact.

  213. "Your land is given by Aetherius, Zoldak Lelhua," Enmerkar replied shortly. "It is by the grace of Tragedy that we all exist on these lands, as I have been told. Father Illaron. All of the Archons and demons that died to repel invaders. I am certain you do own this land, Zoldak Lelhua."

  215. "But recall who gave you said ownership."
  216.  
  217. The fox demon shook his head. "I have stolen nothing from these houses," he explained, "Aside the bait paper found in Zoldak Lelhua's second chest of two total. The other of which, mind, I did not interfere with despite it being open to the public, evidently- without runes to lock it in place."

  219. The mention of Dan urges a growl, though, and he flicks a tail forward in an effort to 'guard' the distance between the two. It'd do nothing if Dan opted to actually leap forward and battle, of course, but. It was meant as more of a symbolism than anything.
  220.  
  221. "You insult the work of my Kin. You insult them like you have done everything to handle, obtain, work, and prepare this land," Enmerkar added. "I will not 'do it again', Zoldak Lelhua. As I said initially, and as I had always intended. But it is Iosefka and Illaron that gave me permission to enter the caves."

  223. "If I am to not, it will be taken up with them first."
  224.  
  225. His tail lowered, his 'snicker' vanished, and his eyes lost their intensity, all in one swift, sweeping transformation of expression and attitude.
  226.  
  227. "Fine. If that is the case, then I will only fixate upon locating and retrieving Dan Karadin's offspring. Oncethey are returned, I will disconnect from the conflict," Enmerkar furthered. "I will not fight for those who clearly do not care for the aid of my kind. Now- "

  229. "If you wish to beat me to relieve your frustrations, we may engage in combat. Do so quickly, though. I have ore to collect elsewhere."

  237. [23:19] On the outskirts of the confrontation, Cyrus stands with his employer and teacher, a visible bead of sweat working its way from the top of his brow down his face. Was it really so much to ask that one city on this damned, hell-blasted continent not be embroiled in some sort of civil unrest bordering on outright conflict?

  239. Unlike Ilonnia, he seems pretty eager to fly under the radar here, stopping only just short of holding her back, merely engaging in some sort of whispered conversation. But he certainly wasn't going to get involved. Take one look at this mess. Yikesarooni.

  249. [23:25] Short of the gun angled slightly towards Dan? Ru found herself finding less and less reason to be-... volatile. Though her words had been bitterly spoken, some sense had at least been heard in them. A rarity, really! Her tone usually made things worse.

  251. "... Be advised as well, Zoldak Lelhua." Ru muttered, pausing long after Enmerkar had spoken his mind. "You may have been given the chance to use this land for your little marketplace, but do know that this still remains a branch of Aetherius until you otherwise change that fact with more than just words." Without having to say it explicitly? He surely knew what she meant. So long as Tragedy lived within the confines of Crafthold? Thalassia was nothing more than a vassal.

  253. Was she trying to put ideas into his head? Maybe. Possibly. Though they were ideas he probably already had.

  255. "Second of all? It may not be your job to teach this young-... creature. But do know that it is here to at least protect this stretch of land from whatever may assail it. And from my experience? Those hailing from-... Huangzhou, was it? Do not discriminate. They do not care. Years ago, Ikkaku rained acid down on low-life farmers merely for living on the same side of the river." The elder Kitsune paused, sighing beneath her breath.

  282. This all made him frustrated, how could his kin and so be so calm, so collected. So... Human-like?

  284. He strived to be something more than that, but this thing calling to him in the back of his head, it screeched. It was heavy, it wanted him to act, he couldn't stand just standing there.

  288. He steps forward, not caring for what is going on, for politics, -for anything of that mattered. The veins on his head were practically bulging out from the frustration this scene had played on him, "That is my friend, I've known that demon since he has existed. I don't care really. You can do whatever you want, but you aren't going to be fighting him while I stand right here."

  290. Who was he? He was just some kid from Dawn, really, he didn't matter, but he knew one thing. He made a promise. "I swear to you, that you will not, so head north and you can fight me, not him. I tire of stupid words and people not actually acting, it is annoying and I have the need to do things that are otherwise illegal here."

  292. Vincent can teach Enmerkar in his own time and it wouldn't be to be a fucking pussy about any of this shit. He hated that.

  294. His head turns to Farin's mom.

  313. [23:39] "It is fine, Kin Accursed Vincent. Humans are not often rational," Enmerkar spoke aloud. "They require activities such as these to let off steam. If it is my limbs that will cushion this miniature civil war, then I have no issue."

  315. He cracked his neck by tilting it to the side far too steeply to make humanly sense. Clearly, his bones didn't exactly... work the same way. But even so, Enmerkar acted nonchalantly, pushing forward onto all four hooved paws.

  317. "Come now, Zoldak Lelhua. We will conduct our stress therapy," the Kaor proclaimed aloud, still popping his various joints- many of which didn't really make sense. Even his tails seemed to crack in preparation. "And, no- I was not in the battles that led to the creation of this place."

  319. "I am three."
  320.  
  321. "But I am indeed what comes next for Crafthold," Enmerkar added. "As is Kin Accursed Vincent. As is the rest of this city. Crafthold will not subsist on fifty-year-old humans forever- and that is not an insult. It is simply a statement of fact. One day, there will be a new regime, and that regime must be adequately protected."

  323. "For now, though, this battle will have to do. Come, let us duel."

  334. [23:41] Icarus shifts his gaze to Vincent. "What the fuck are you looking at me for?"

  337. [00:07] "Aetherius is the birthplace of my modern people," Enmerkar replied, "But it is not my home. My home is here. I was born here. Raised here. Learned, evolved, and grew here. This is as much my home as it is your son's- "

  339. "Even if I evidently do not qualify as his equivalent. What if Illaron banished your son from this place?" the Kaor added. "It is pertinent to consider."

  341. Hellstorm cracked to life around the Kaor, his body untouched but each of six tails bearing their own connected static cage of lightning. They were weapons individually, glaring and shining with too much energy to note.

  343. "This is not to demonstrate some sort of superiority, Zoldak Lelhua. If I were to do that, it would be in a handful of years when I ascend once more, for a final time," Enmerkar proclaimed. "For now, I am simply gauging things for when that time comes."

  368. [00:24] Occultic lightning rained down around Zoldak, and yet the man did not seem to pay it any mind. He let the bolts of demonic energy strike him time and time again. And yet, the shell of mana around him seemed to deflect most of it, allowing him to focus on pursuing his quarry.

  370. Enmerkar is, time and time again, blasted away with bursts of pure force. Illusion plague the demon's mind, shortly before the merchant swoops in for a close ranged blow. It doesn't take much of this for the many-tailed fox to end up laying on the ground, exhausted.

  372. Gliding towards his downed foe, Zoldak flicks his wrist towards them. An invisible force lifts the demon back onto their paws as the man tucks his pistol away and begins to rebutton his coat and apply a fresh pair of gloves from a front pocket. The mana streaming from his body gradually dies down, until there is no more trace of it.

  374. "Alright. So this is your home. I can accept that fact. Perhaps I am letting my current opinions and viewpoints tip things out of balance. That isn't a good. All things must be fair and balanced."

  376. His arms cross as the nigh-featureless veil upon his face regards the three year old demon, the crude graffiti on it making him look somewhat like a gentlemanly catman.

  378. "I respect Lord Illaron. I always have. As his hatchling, I suppose I should transfer some of that respect to you."

  380. Drumming his fingers against the stiff, black fabric which cover his biceps, the merchant continues to buzz his metallic voice towards Enmerkar.

  382. "Still. If you say you are of Crafthold, then you should respect its harshest of laws. Thievery is the only thing that warrants the death penalty around here. I have dealt with two thieves in as many years. One of them was frozen alive, the other one watched as I ate their heart in front of them."

  384. Turning away, he starts to glide towards Amoxtli. He waves a hand over his shoulder, as though brushing everything behind him.
  385.  
  386. "Consider everything void. Enter the cave. Feel free to hang around. Just do not go around reclaiming property unless you know for a fact that it is abandoned."

  388. The merchant pauses for a moment, just to make one last statement.

  390. "Seriously. I fucking hate thieves."

  479. [00:33] The demon was quite clearly outmatched. At the peak of his evolution thus far, Enmerkar was certain he did better than he would have a week ago- but it was still not enough. Not nearly enough. In fact? It was unlikely he'd be able to put a significant dent in the merchant until his next ascension rolled around.

  481. All the more reason to hurry up. He had to see how well he'd fare in a more developed body, right? He had to prove why the 'hatchling' of Illaron deserved the same respect.

  483. Whatever the case, grudges and otherwise weren't be to considered now. He was covered in bruises and burns and scratches, and even his usually-intense eyes seemed foggy and distracted, the illusory magics of Zoldak doing more than enough to confuse his focus. By the time he was back on his feet?

  485. It had felt like mere seconds went by, the battle a difficult one to recollect.

  487. "... I will do so. As before, I wasunaware of the boundaries of properties," Enmerkar spoke, truthfully. "It was unwise of me to act without checking first. I will do better to wholesomely research topics of interest before delving into their abandoned housing. I appreciate your rescinding of the cave and city ban- "

  489. The fox's head bowed briefly.

  491. "That will be remembered in the years to come. Now, if you do not mind, I will attend to nursing what minor wounds I have attained in our duel. It is in my best interests to be undamaged when hunting for ore in the vampire caves to the north."
