  1. Technique, subtlety, and innovation.
  2. Control, restraint, and bravery.
  3. These are what I would use to describe Jared Klein (Rivers of Nihil), Dirk Verbeuren (Soilwork), and Jesse Beahler (Black Crown Initiate) in that order.
  4.
  5. It is difficult to express the minute control Jared has over his limbs. Snare, tom, and kick hits are genuinely without fault. I think he could be doing a lot more if he were to take a couple years learning jazz or swing, but strictly speaking about metal he is fantastic. In every song his snare and bass hits have the power, speed, and accuracy of a master, and I think would be the most difficult to replicate. I do wish he'd invest in more variety in his cymbals tho. Also that fucker can tune a snare. Of the three, he creates the most powerful beats, and adds the most to his band's sound.

  7. When it comes to Dirk, I almost want to say he doesn't have to be so detailed; there is so much nuance in his riffs that my mortal mind cannot comprehend playing them without sacrifice. Nearly every song off of The Living Infinite has extremely quiet nods that I think only a drummer could sincerely appreciate, and even then only after multiple listens. This is also saying nothing of his extreme mechanical skill, which I think he wastes on unnecessary blast beats (and megadeth) from time to time. Of the three, he is the most subtle, and seems the most invested in the art of high-level drumming.

  9. Jesse isn't afraid to use one bass pedal, or play his hi-hat with three limbs, or insert jazzy ride patterns into his songs, and I admire that a lot in death metal. His riffs are complex and nuanced in a bold, almost fearless way, challenging both minimalism and overt power at the same time. I think his work might be the easiest of these to replicate, but also certainly the most difficult to invent, and for that he gets a lot of points from me. Of the three, he is the most innovative, and perhaps makes the most impressive rhythms.

  11. Honorable Mention: Yoni Madar
  12. Yoni is the undisputed king of limb independence. There is not a single drummer alive that doesn't envy his ability to maintain a unique, complex and flowing rhythm on each of his four limbs at once. His stick and snare control are unparalleled, resulting in hybrid clicks and rim shots in the same motion. Even his rolls are a unique experience each time, with accents and ghost notes weaving in and out in seemingly instinctive patterns that betray the decades of mastery and innovation put into them. He is the definition of an intelligent drummer, flowing from one mechanically complex motion to the next without any visible seam. The world would be blessed beyond words if he took up a metal career, which I have no doubt he would immediately succeed at.
