  1. I hate writer Justin Hargin, who goes by the (more and more unfortunate as time goes on) pen name David Wong. Viscerally, deeply. Why, you might wonder, do I hate a successful cosmic horror writer and (alledgedly) left-leaning prominent creator on Cracked?
  2.
  3. Well, the reason why Ihate him is up to be repeated on Cracked as it has yearly, so you're in luck for it is a timely occasion, and I will describe exactly why he disgusts and enrages me!
  4.
  5. The article is titled "6 Harsh Truths That Will Make You A Better Person." To briefly summarize its points, it is that you feel miserable because you do not produce anything for society; that people only like you for what they can get out of you; and that you have to; in more eloquent words "git gud" no matter the personal toll because Self Improvement Is Tough.
  6.
  7. Now, let me tell you about disability theory. Or, rather, why it contradicts this. Disability theory holds that a thing being a "disability" is a failure of the society (We will get back to this later), and that the weaknesses people have from inherent conditions are due to a society not supporting it, not individual failure to Become Normal.
  8.
  9. This is important because, I am disabled. By virtue of being ADHD and on the autism spectrum; in that very unfortunate nitche where I am considered "high functioning" because my deeper issues are made invisible, in particular executive functioning; IE the ability to manage time, mentally juggle multiple tasks and generally do things.
  10.
  11. This leads to a lot of young people wondering why they're so "lazy" when they're stuck suffering from this. And it's certainly what it was like for me in High School, when this article debuted and fucked me up for reasons I did not yet understand. And it's certainly like that for a lot of the young people I know with the same problems; at least one of which has talked about ending their own
  12.
  13. Which, man I have been there more and more as as not only an autistic person, but as an artist; a position of societal precarity where; even if you do everything right as Kate Wagner talks about in her article about symphony orchestra,
  14.
  15. But, that's the kicker. In Dave's world, this doesn't matter. It's a harsh truth, you will die if you can't function for other people; and you will have it coming.
  16.
  17. Just look at the speech from Glengarry Glenn Ross; he cites in the article; which will get you motivated if you're a good person who wants to change! Never mind that it has been pointed out that the speech is meant on a narrative level to be corporate BS that's ultimately distructive, don't you want to be successful?!
  18.
  19. There's an narrative of autistic people becoming more "normal" over the years that feeds off of this type of rhetoric. This narrative is also a load of shit, as the Autism community has spoken of regarding it being more a case of masking one's own neurodivergence until a breakdown. But that's a success in Dave's book, because it means you still made yourself useful for others!
  20.
  21. Let me also tell you about another article by Dave I think informs this: The Monkeysphere. Long story short, the idea is that the human neurology cannot comprehend the scale of human society as it relates to other people. Perhaps, a decent person might say, this is why systems need to be designed to value human life over; say; the percentage of widgets you can churn out.
  22.
  23. But, in the light of the Harsh Truths article, it takes on a much more sinister affect, like the cry of the necrocentrist that "There is no such thing as society." Or, rather, that society is inherently unnatural and fragile; and if we treated human life like it mattered beyond efficiency; it would collapse.
  24.
  25. This would explain him talking about how awful and uncouth antifa is, or him chiding people being annoyed at the moderate traitors pushing Joe Biden's popularity because "Oh it's complicated". Because how dare you care about human life more than the horse race on the treadmill leading into the sausage factory, the sausage has to get made even if it's terrible horsemeat sausage with bits of bone and crushed jockey in there!
  26.
  27. As much as I have expressed hate for the hard-green/primmie-lite Degrowth Movement, I hate Dave as the inverse of their efficiency fetishism. Efficiency not measured in sacrificing the quality of life of The Wrong People in The Bad Greedy Global North for The Greater Good but measured in sacrificing those who are deemed "defective" for the needs of what is viewed as a society that would collapse if we treated people decently.
  28.
  29. And thus gets at the heart of why his "harsh truths" hurt me as a disabled person, because it treats our lives as less valuable for not being able to measure up to the standards of usefulness relating to other people. I hate him because I hate there are so many people out there like him that get platforms while those of us below are left to rot.
  30.
  31. So, to make long story short, EAT MY ENTIRE DISABLED ASS DAVE!
