- ---
- I will talk to you at the meeting tomorrow. (the meeting is decided, arranged, and scheduled)
- We also use “will” for offers and promises.
- We can use “won’t” for refusal (and things like refusal), not only for predictions:
- No, you’ll have to ask someone else. I won’t do it.
- The computer won’t print. We need to call the repair company.

- p. 53
- cover letter = a letter that you write and include with your resume when you want a job
- reference letter = a letter that a former boss writes to explain what kind of worker you are
- ---
- part 2 - which information is included in this cover letter? and which can you omit if it’s an email instead of a paper letter?
- a reference to something = an act of referring to something
- “To eat, or not to eat,” is a reference to Shakespeare, because he famously wrote, “To be, or not to be,” in Hamlet, and most people recognize the similar sentence. (It makes you think about Shakespeare.)
- “I am enclosing my resume,” is a reference to your resume. (It makes me think about your resume.)
- “I am willing to relocate.” = If you ask me to relocate, I will say okay.
- ---
- part 4a - find examples of each convention for formal writing
- concise sentences: I will graduate in Digital Media this month from Boston University. I am willing to relocate if necessary.
- formal phrases to begin sentences: I am writing in reply to…; I consider myself to be…; I am available for an interview…; I am enclosing my resume; I look forward to hearing from you.
- no contractions: “I am”, “I will”
- standard opening and closing phrases: Dear Sir or Madam; Yours sincerely
- other formal openings: Dear Mr. Malivuk; Dear Pat Robertson; To whom it may concern
- other formal closings: Regards; Kind regards; Yours faithfully; Sincerely
- ---
- part 4b - rewrite these sentences in a more formal style
- 1 I will finish my degree in the near future. (present continuous is a little informal)
- 2 I look forward to hearing from you.
- 3 I am writing in reply to your advertisement in the newspaper. I am interested in the position of...
- 4 I am enclosing my resume, which gives my contact details.
- My contact details are on my resume, which I am enclosing. / which I have enclosed.
- (“enclosed” = in the same envelope; if you email something, other documents are “attached”)
- 5 I will be available for an interview from the beginning of August.
- ---
- Homework: Write your own cover letter (for a job you really want, or one of the jobs you interviewed for in class today). Follow the layout and style of the letter on p. 53 of the textbook.
