  12. Any ideas to raise platelets?  Pt cannot have surgery until
  13. levels are raised.  I read through the archives and first
  14. recommended sesame oil.  She cannot tolerate sesame oil as it
  15. triggers a gallbladder attack.  I did let her know she could
  16. apply topically.  Medical history:  pt had a grapefruit size
  17. mucus cyst adenoma (precancerous) on her pancreas.  Surgery to
  18. remove mass and resect pancreas resulted in damage to the
  19. splenic vein and splenomegaly.  Doctors believe this to bea
  20. possible cause of her low platelets.  Current level is 39, 000.
  21.  Levels continuously dropping and her doctors cannot stabilize.
  22.  Pt has been scheduled for a hysterectomy, but doctors cannot
  23. perform the surgery based on labs.  She now also has low
  24. lymphocytes, hemoglobin and hematocrit.  Would herbs be an
  25. option in such a severe case?  Any ideas are greatly
  26. appreciated.  This patient's doctors do not know what to do
  27. with her anymore.
  28.
  29. Not sure if any background info helps, but she has significant
  30. medical hx.  Currently has a pituitary adenoma (her second,
  31. first was a prolactinoma), and a hx of invasive ductal
  32. carcinoma (ER+, HER neg, currently on tamoxifen) in addition to
  33. the adenoma on her pancreas.  Also hypothyroidism and other
  34. autoimmune concerns.  Complicated case, but she's asked me to
  35. help her raise her platelets first.
  36.
  37. Thanks for reading,

  108. Hello Everyone,
  109.
  110. I was intrigued by a recent Townsend article about the
  111. non-discrimination provision of the Affordable Care Act -
  112. section 2706. The article largely focused on how the provision
  113. affects naturopathic doctors. I'm sure I don't understand this
  114. as well as some, but it sure seems like we are on the verge of
  115. a big change. At the least it seems we will see insurance
  116. equity in all of the licensed states that don't already have
  117. equity laws, like Arizona.
  118.
  119. Regardless of how you feel about taking insurance, the heart of
  120. the law is non-discrimination and it seems to me, insurance
  121. companies will be taking unnecessary legal risks by unfairly
  122. capping reimbursement or trying to exclude us. Perhaps I'm
  123. being overly optimistic, but if the above all plays out I think
  124. this will bring a huge momentum for our profession and bring
  125. licensure in all 50 states very quickly. A new years wish at
  126. least.
  127.
  128. An organization called the "Integrative Healthcare Policy
  129. Consortium" appears to be our friend and is fighting to protect
  130. us and other providers. Scroll down to watch the video of
  131. Deborah Senn, former Insurance Commissioner for the state of
  132. Washington describing section 2706 and the purpose of this
  133. organization. I think it's definitely worth a peek.

  160. Michael: Thank you for posting this.  There was just a brief,
  161. related discussion in the ND Facebook group, because a few of
  162. us have been told by NeuroScience that we can order Medicare
  163. labs only through the end of this month, but won't be allowed
  164. to after Jan 1, 2014.
  165.
  166. Related?
  167.
  168. I thought it seemed awfully strange that we would have this
  169. ability now, but lose it in 2014, since I knew (vaguely) about
  170. this clause in the ACA.
  171.
  172. I'm looking forward to this discussion,

  191. The ACA applies only to new insurance products. Not Medicare,
  192. Medicaid, or grandfathered employer insurance programs. John

  216. I can see why this organization, the  "Integrative Healthcare
  217. Policy Consortium" is so pro-naturopathic, there are lot's of
  218. ND's on their BOD. ;-)
  219.
  220. I'm no expert here, but section 2706 only pertains to private
  221. health insurance companies that are part of the Affordable Care
  222. Act (ACA) exchanges. This does not pertain to medicare or
  223. medicaid. So, federal health insurance, such as medicare and
  224. medicaid will continue to discriminate. However, the ACA
  225. specially protects state licensed health care providers.
  226.
  227. Aside from Vermont, I don't think naturopaths can not work with
  228. medicare. One exception are what I would call mercy
  229. submissions. Where the patient writes a letter or has the
  230. doctor writes a letter explaining not being covered by medicare
  231. and they will sometimes pay on this submissions.
  232.
  233. The benefits of the sections 2706 pertain to licensed states
  234. only. But if we think big, big things will come from this.

  261. Hi Melissa
  262.
  263. Ceanothus is specific for healing the spleen. I would give her a
  264. tincture  30 drops TID with a low potency homeopathic Ceanothus
  265. (6C, 12X)  TID. i have seen some remarkable results in
  266. splenomegaly after malaria and in association with hemolytic
  267. anemia.
  268.
  269. Boericke has some interesting little notes about Ceanothus

  283. Re: low platelets,
  284.
  285. For other patients with this cc, ITP for example, a
  286. constitutional remedy is in order; if that's not your strength,
  287. look for keynotes of the common rx that have low platelets:
  288. PHOS, FERR PHOS, CROTALUS H. If you are able to choose a rx,
  289. give in a 6c or 12c daily with the other botanical/nt
  290. recommendations.
  291.
  292. Good luck!
