The process of DECIDING ON A HOUSE, more commonly called $FANCYWORD, is intimately related with the process of $RACE ROMANCE.

ROMANCE on $PLANET is sorted into three types: AMOINAL, FRAMETAL, and COITURNAL. These are VASTLY SUPERIOR to the INFERIOR ALTERNIAN QUADRANTS, as any $RACE will happily tell you, likely shortly before they KILL YOU for talking about their SWORN ENEMIES. AMOINAL LOVE is a ROMANTIC LOVE, something CLOSELY RESEMBLING the quadrant of MATESPRIT and also what most HUMANS would consider LOVE. FRAMETAL LOVE roughly corresponds to a MATESPRIT, or the HUMAN concept of BEST FRIENDS. COITURNAL LOVE most closely resembles what humans LIKE TO CALL love, also known as LUST, and is primarily based on PHYSICAL ATTRACTION.

NOT THAT HARD. Unless you're an IDIOT TROLL or SOMETHING.

However, the part that makes TROLL PSYCHES assume hilariously INGRATIATING POSTURES OF HUMILIATION is the TIER SYSTEM. Each of the three TYPES OF LOVE can exist on each of the three TIERS: the SUPAST TIER, where the other person is considered SOCIALLY ABOVE YOU, the TRAERI TIER, where the other person is ROUGHLY AROUND YOUR STATION, and the FIRTER TIER, where the other person is BENEATH YOU. Unlike ALTERNIAN QUADRANTS, filling ALL NINE TYPES is not only not mandatory, but also VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE, despite the rather common practice of one person filling MULTIPLE TYPES OF LOVE PER TIER. It's VERY HARD, though not unheard of, for the same person to fill MULTIPLE TIERS of the same LOVE.

The WORDS for each kind of LOVE/TIER COMBINATION are SIMPLE: take the LOVE root (AMO, FRA, or COI) and SLAM IT ROUGHLY AGAINST the TIER root (SUP, TRA, or FIR).

Filling some of these QUADRANTS is MANDATORY, in the sense that all $RACES are expected to have filled at least a few by the AGE OF MAJORITY. This is because WHAT PEOPLE THEY KNOW and WHAT BONDS THEY FORM determine WHAT HOUSE THEY ENTER. When a $RACE finds THE SAME LOVE with PEOPLE OF ONE HOUSE across ALL THREE TIERS, ALL THREE LOVES are found across ONE TIER, or, the most SACRED AND DIFFICULT SITUATION, FRATRA and either the pair of AMOSUP and COIFIR or the pair of AMOFIR and COISUP, they are allowed to join THAT HOUSE.

CLOSE BONDS are considered ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL TO POSSESS, and the hostile WILDS OF $PLANET are inhospitable to LONER $RACES.
