ESPN is a group of pay television sports channels in the United Kingdom and Ireland, owned by ESPN Inc., a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company (which owns a controlling 80% stake) and the Hearst Communications (which owns the remaining 20%) and operated by by BT Consumer; a division of BT Group that was launched in July 2002 as Setanta Sports. The channels are based at the former International Broadcast Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. ESPN is available on the BT TV, Sky and Virgin Media television platforms in the UK and Sky, Eir TV and Vodafone TV in the Republic of Ireland.

  3. On 22 June 2009, Setanta Sports was acquired by ESPN Inc. As a result, on 3 August 2009, the channels were rebranded as ESPN. Prior to that date, ESPN's only operations in the UK were archive sports channel ESPN Classic, as well as the pan-European ESPN America channel, which focused on North American sport.

ESPN holds exclusive live UK and Republic of Ireland TV rights to 72 Premier League matches per season, Scottish League Cup, all Australia's home cricket matches, the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Copa América, UFC, National League, Ligue 1, the Bundesliga, Serie A, the FA Community Shield, the FA Trophy and the European Rugby Challenge Cup, the Premiership Rugby Cup, PRO14 Rugby, Rugby League Four Nations, MotoGP, NASCAR, MLB, approximately 75% of Gaelic Athletic Association games, the FIH Hockey World League, NHL and WWE. They are also the official broadcast partner of the European Rugby Champions Cup and Premiership Rugby. ESPN also holds shared rights to the FA Cup with the BBC, the Scottish Professional Football League with Sky Sports and BBC Alba and the Scottish Cup with BBC Scotland.

  7. In the UK, ESPN is available in standard definition with all BT TV packages for BT Broadband customers, programming is also available in UHD called ESPN UHD to BT Infinity customers for an additional fee.

  9. On Sky and Plusnet TV ESPN only is currently offered for free to broadband subscribers as 'ESPN Lite', regardless of what subscription they have. Customers who wish to view the remaining channels can subscribe to the 'ESPN Pack' in either standard or high definition. BT also provide broadband subscribers access to the channels via the ESPN online player and mobile app. ESPN Pack subscribers also receive BoxNation in standard definition only and Sky UK customers also have exclusive access to AMC from BT in the relevant definition.

  11. Virgin Media customers receive ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPN4 in HD and ESPN UHD as part of their "Full House" bundle however, they do not receive BoxNation or AMC from BT.

  13. TalkTalk TV customers must subscribe to the BT Sport Pack in order to receive the entire range of channels.

  15. In the Republic of Ireland, ESPN channels (except ESPN UHD) are bundled with Eir Sport subscriptions across all platforms, as a part of a deal BT had with what was Setanta Sports back then. The deal means ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPN4 and BoxNation are part of the Eir Sport Pack in the Republic, along with Eir Sport 1 and Eir Sport 2.

  18. ESPNews is a British free-to-air television channel dedicated to rolling sports news programming. The channel launched on 29 November 2007 as Setanta Sports News. On 22 June 2009, Setanta Sports was acquired by ESPN Inc. As a result, on 3 August 2009, the channel was rebranded as ESPNews.

The channel launched on 30 September 2011.
