  1. Hey DA.
  2. I decided it would be a good idea for me to make a topic detailing how to best use your Op powers.
  3. To that end, this topic contains information on common modes and commands you will be required to understand and will probably use.
  4.
  5. ---
  6.
  7. ::MODES::
  8. General Information.
  9. One of the most common things you will be required to do as an Op for DA is set modes. There is an extensive array of modes you can set, though it is exceedingly unlikely that you will be required to set the majority of them. With that in mind, I have included information on the most common ones you will need.
  10. -There are two different kinds of mode. The first is a uMode, or a USER MODE. This is a mode set on a user.
  11. -The other is a chMode, or a CHANNEL MODE. This is a mode which is set on a channel.
  12.
  13. Commonly used modes.
  14. >>>+v = Voice.
  15. -This is a mode we set on all non-guest users in our channel.
  16. -When I say "non-guest", I mean any user whose nick is not Something-Guestnumber. A guest whose nick is simply Guestnumber SHOULD be voiced.
  17. >>>Note: We do not voice members ([DA]something), we wait for Dratini to do it. This helps keep track of who needs to be added to the auto-voice (VOp) list.
  18. -Voice is a uMode.
  19.
  20. >>>+m = Moderated.
  21. -This means that any user who does not have +v, voice, VOp, or a + next to their name will be unable to speak in the channel.
  22. -Moderated is a chMode.
  23.

  57. ::HELP YOURSELF!::
  58. -It is quite likely that there will come a time when there is something you don't understand. If that time does indeed come, there are several things you can do to help yourself out.

  106. ::KICKING::
  107. General Information.
  108. -If there is a troublesome user in the clan channel who does not respond to warning, it is the accepted method of dealing with them to forcefully expel them from the channel by kicking them.

  137. ::BANNING::
  138. General Information.
  139. -Banning has recently become more complex. PurpleSurge has recently added a command that lets us see a user's cloaked host. This is useful because if we ban the cloaked host, the user cannot change their vHost (for info on vHosts, see "::HOSTS::" later in the topic) to evade.
  140. -The command to retrieve the cloaked host can also be found under ::HOSTS:: later in the topic.
  141. -Using the bot to ban a user is not advised, as it occasionally bans vHosts. Manual bans are the advised method of banning a user.
  142.
  143.
  144.
  145. How to do it.
  146. QUOTE (Manual Ban <Setting the mode +b> (HalfOps and above))
  147. /mode #channel +b *!*@cloaked.host.goes.here
  148.
  149. QUOTE (ChanServ Ban <Bot performs a ban @ kick> (AOps and above))
  150. /cs ban #channel nick reason
  151.
  152.
  153.
  154.
  155. How to undo it.
  156. QUOTE (Manual Unban <Setting mode -b> (HalfOps and above))
  157. /mode #channel -b banned material here
  158.
  159.
  160.
  161.
  162. How to unban yourself.
  163. -There comes a time, in every Op's life, where they manage to somehow ban themselves (yes, it tends to be hilarious), or are banned accidentally (or of course on purpose. Again, hilarious) by a superior.
  164. -To unban yourself from outside the channel, use this command:
  165. QUOTE (Unban Yourself (HalfOps and above))
  166. /cs unban #channel
  167.
  168.
  169.
  170.
  171. Additional Information
  172. -There exist more complex bans. For information on those, please refer to "::ABOVE AND BEYOND::".

  191. ::NICKS::
  192. General Information.
  193. -Nicknames on the channel are an incredibly important aspect, we use them to identify users.
  194. -When guests join our channel with the nick format Something-Guestnumber, they should instructed to do the following:
  195. QUOTE (Guest Nicks)
  196. Something-Guestnumber, please change to a non-guest nick: /nick new nick
  197.
  198. -It is very important to give them the command to do this, as some new users may not understand how to change nicks.
  199. -If a guest fails to change to a non-guest nick, kick them from the channel. GIVE THEM THE COMMAND AGAIN IN THE KICK MESSAGE (see "::KICKING::" for details).
  200. >>>Note: I understand that many of you will be asking users to "identify". This is incorrect for the following reasons: Guests, being guests, do not have assigned passwords; they lack a NickServ user account. Since they do not have a NickServ-assigned password, they intrinsically lack the ability to identify. It is therefore pointless asking them to do something they CANNOT DO.
  201.
  202.
  203.
  204. Registering a Nick.
  205. -It is mandatory for all members to have at least one registered nick in order to be added to the access list and possibly promoted at some point.
  206. -To register your FIRST nick, use this command:
  207. QUOTE (Register 1st Nick)
  208. /ns register password e-mail address
  209.
  210. -Please use a REAL e-mail address. You will receive an e-mail containing an activation code you will have to use to activate your nick.
  211.
  212. -If you or another user desire(s) another nick, you will have to use a different command. It is as follows:
  213. QUOTE (Register More Nicks)
  214. /ns group your first nick your first nick's password
  215.
  216. -Having your nicks GROUPED means that they all share the same access (VOp, HalfOp, AOp, etc.) and can all be identified as you.
  217. -To see all nicks in your Nick Group, use this command:
  218. QUOTE (View Nick Group)
  219. /ns glist
  220.
  221. >>>Note: it is against network policy to have MORE THAN FIVE nicks. You will get in trouble with the folks in charge of the network if you register nicks separately. We do not want that kind of negative attention on our clan.
  222.
  223.
  224.
  225. Banning Nicks?
  226. -Yes, it is entirely possible to ban nicks as well as hosts. It is strongly advised that you DO NOT DO THIS, as the user may simply change nicks to evade the ban.

  245. ::HOSTS::
  246. General Information.
  247. -These are commonly referred to (incorrectly, I might add) as IPs. The IP is a different thing entirely. Do not refer to a host in this way.
  248. >>>Note: The Host is THE SAME THING as the cloaked Host
  249. -Here is my own host as an example.
  250. QUOTE (MurderMachine's cloaked Host)
  251. *!*@PurpleSurge-3EA60E5D.resnet.st-andrews.ac.uk
  252.
  253. -This is the material that is to be used when you set a ban. YOU must add *!*@ to the start of it when you find the host.
  254.
  255.
  256.
  257. vHosts.
  258. -vHosts, or virtual Hosts, are used to cover the cloaked Host.
  259. -They are essentially there to appear stylish or funny, in place of the cloaked Host.
  260. -Here is my vHost as an example:
  261. QUOTE (MurderMachine's vHost)
  262. *!*@helper.purplesurge.com
  263.
  264. -One vHost can be assigned to every nick which is in a nick group. This means that a user can have UP TO FIVE DIFFERENT vHOSTS (one per nick).
  265. -If a user is able to change nick and therein change vHosts, they will be able to circumvent any ban set on the vHost. For this reason, you SHOULD NOT ban the vHost, but you SHOULD ban the cloaked host.
  266. -It is possible to request a vHost be assigned to your nick by using this command:
  267. QUOTE (How to get a vHost)
  268. /hs request something.something
  269.
  270. >>>Note: if you want something BEFORE the @ in the vHost (the part before the @ is called the ident, in a vHost, it is called the vIdent), use this command:
  271. QUOTE (How to get a vHost and vIdent)
  272. /hs request something@something.something
  273.
  274. -The vIdent can only be nine characters long.
  275.
  276.
  277.
  278. How to See the cloaked Host.
  279. -The cloaked Host, as mentioned earlier, is the endgame of all bans.
  280. -In order to use the cloaked Host in modes, you MUST add *!*@ to the front of it. To see the cloaked Host, use this command:
  281. QUOTE (Retrieve cloaked Host)
  282. /getcloakhost nick
  283.

  344. QUOTE (To perform a notice)
  345. /notice nick message goes here
  346.
  347. -Also, notices are a lot more versatile than a PM. You can send private messages to large groups of users at once.

  373. -Here is mine as an example:
  374. QUOTE (MurderMachine joining and his greet activating)
  375. * MurderMachine (Killbot@helper.purplesurge.com) has joined #DracoAlliance
  376. <&Dratini> [MurderMachine] "Let no man imagine that he has no influence. Whoever he may be, and wherever he may be placed, the man who thinks becomes a light and a power." -Henry George
  377.
  378. -They can be anything, but please try to keep them appropriate.

  413. ::ABOVE AND BEYOND::
  414. General Information.
  415. -There are also ways in which you can set yourself above other Ops, by showing an extended knowledge of non-mandatory information, a fraction of which will be covered here.
  416. -This kind of knowledge shows intelligence and dedication to being a good Op.
  417.
  418.
  419.
  420. Extended Ban Types.
  421. -We all know that bans stop a user from doing the following: Joining, speaking and changing nicks (though the latter two are only if unvoiced). It is possible to split a ban up into four components that can do all of those things without preventing the user from joining. You, however, will only ever be required to use two of these.
  422.
  423. >The Quiet Ban
  424. -The quiet ban stops a single unvoiced user from speaking while still being able to join. It is performed using the following command:
  425. QUOTE (Quiet Ban)
  426. /mode #channel +b ~q:*!*@host.goes.here
  427.
  428.
  429. >The Nick-Change Ban
  430. -The nick-change ban prevents a user from changing their nick, while still allowing them to join. It is performed using the following command:
  431. QUOTE (Nick-Change Ban)
  432. /mode #channel +b ~n:*!*@host.goes.here
  433.
  434.
  435.
  436.
  437. Scripts.
  438. -mIRC is equipped with the ability to load and use scripts, which are coded ways to perform commonly executed tasks. This can include absolutely anything that mIRC is capable of doing normally, condensed into a single command.
  439. -I will not list any here, as they are far too complex to explain in a non-interactive setting, but you are able to PM me at any time in the clan channel to inquire about what scripts are useful.
  440. -I am willing to share my scripts with you if you wish, all you need to is PM me.
  441.
  442. ---
  443.
  444.
  445. I sincerely hope you find this guide useful and informative. I will likely add to it over time and as I discover new things.
  446. Feel free to PM me on the clan channel if you require more information, or leave a comment here and I will do my best to answer it.
  447.
  448. -Jack
