- <Vigilant_GM> IT IS THE 41ST MILLENNIUM...
- <Vigilant_GM> Once you have heard the menu and made your selections, drinks arrive at the table. Your host, then speaks up.
- <Vigilant_GM> "I understand you were involved in the unfortunate matter in the Drunnels," he says with a light smile on his face. "Not to worry, I am not upset," he adds before you can respond.
- <Vigilant_GM> "Though clearly you have boarded my vessel well-armed, and..." he takes a sip of his drink, "and while I might take exception to aggressive stowaways, I am told you claim a higher allegiance."
- <Vigilant_GM> "As your host, might I ask you to elaborate on this claim?" he asks with the same charming lightness about his tone.
- <Minoris> "I'll start since I likely have the simple story, I have no affiliation with anyone in this room bar a chance encounter with the rest of the group, I imagine your aware of my reason for being aboard."
- <Baird> "We can show you our badge of office if you require. Or are you asking for specifics of our investigation?"
- <Vigilant_GM> "You are guests, this is no interrogation. I simply wish to know who is on board my vessel."
- <Vigilant_GM> "The Mother-Canoness can speak to the hospitality afforded to those passengers of a higher station who travel within the Oath Unspoken."
- <Baird> "From what I've seen of the amenities offered I do not doubt your hospitality. Due to the nature of our business it was necessary we felt to conceal our presence. At least at first."
- <Vigilant_GM> Just then, the starter dishes are served. Fresh vegetables, with a soft savory paste, and a sweet-sour sauce. The portions are small, introductions to the rest of the dinner.
- <Vigilant_GM> "I understand, naturally. If I may be so bold, you are not yourselves Inquisitors. Do I presume correctly?"
- <Baird> "There are different titles and levels to the organization. Suffice it to say that we do operate with the same authority."
- <Minoris> "It would be a miracle of the Emperors own creation to see so many cooperating in such conditions."
- <Vigilant_GM> "I'm afraid I must press for an answer," he begins to explain. It is his Seneschal, however, who finishes his Lord-Captain's sentence; "I am afraid, sir, that the distinction is necessary, as it pertains to the obligations under the Anzaforr Warrant of Trade."
- <Baird> "As for the exact title, then you are correct Lord Captain."
- <Vigilant_GM> The Seneschal nods to his Master.
- <Vigilant_GM> At this, small vials are passed to each of you.
- <Vigilant_GM> "May I examine your credentials?"
- * Karpath eyes the vial but not sure about it.
- <Baird> "I can allow you to verify them of course. But I won't allow them to leave my person."
- * Nitrous is wary that there are only guards left and braces for combat
- <Vigilant_GM> "I need only see it," the Seneschal nods.
- * Baird holds up the badge but maintains a firm grip upon it.
- <Vigilant_GM> The Seneschal's augmetic eye clicks twice.
- <Vigilant_GM> "Confirmed, Lord-Captain."
- <Vigilant_GM> "Good! Now, if you would please drink the contents of the vials. Mother-Canoness, we had not expected you, but you may have mine," he reaches into his coat and produces one.
- <Vigilant_GM> "You have been breathing a slow-acting toxin. Something of a precaution, you understand. Jyrgan, the commander of my Armsmen, was convinced you were Surena operatives."
- <Baird> "And the vials contain the antidote."
- <Vigilant_GM> "Precisely!"
- <Minoris> "If that is the case why would you give me your own?"
- * Nitrous starts drinking the vial slowly
- * Baird nods to the others and downs his vial.
- * Thesse stops stuffing her face and starts chugging the vial.
- <Vigilant_GM> "The Genetor Magi's work has allowed me to build sufficient tolerance, unless exposed to concentrated doses."
- * Minoris approaches the head of the table to take the vial.
- * Tony is hesitant, but then downs the vial
- * Karpath looks at the vial and drinks it slowly.
- <Minoris> "I have no reason to distrust you, my death would likely cause you more trouble than its worth."
- * Minoris drinks the vial.
- * Velam takes the vial and downs it.
- <Vigilant_GM> "I assure you, I will assist in what ways I can. It is my hope that you are able to return to your Master with a successful mission report - and a good word for my crew and vessel," he says with a warm smile.
- <Baird> "More than happy to speak favorably on your behalf for your assistance Lord Captain."
- <Vigilant_GM> "You are welcome to remain in the staterooms for the duration of your investigation. And if you have any questions for me, please, let us get acquainted."
- * Nitrous nods
- <Baird> "Well as to the investigation. I don't know how things are done or how business is typically discussed but I feel we should fill you in as much as we can and provide an ample warning to the goings on."
- <Vigilant_GM> "My attention is yours."
- <Minoris> "I too would like to hear more so I can potentially be of aid"
- <Baird> "And you can attest to all ears present that the details will not go further than this room Lord Captain?" Bairds eyes flick too and away from the Xenos at the table rather quickly.
- <Velam> The Savant keeps his vial, his curiousity driving him to studying it later.
- <Vigilant_GM> "All in this room are sworn to secrecy," he nods assuringly.
- <Velam> Velam gives Baird a knowing look before sipping from his ordered drink.
- * Baird nods and begins providing information about their investigation. Mostly focusing on the Inheritors, The Mournful Song, Sable Smugglers, the man named Terrance Del and the plot to take over his ship.
- <Vigilant_GM> "Do we know about these entities?" the Lord-Captain asks his Seneschal.
- <Vigilant_GM> He takes several seconds as though sifting through information in his head before responding. "The Trade Sable. Sector-wide illicit smuggling operations. No known hierarchy; a collective of opportunistic black-market movers."
- <Vigilant_GM> Pausing for a moment again, he continues. "Terrance Del. Bounty Hunter licensed by Desoleum Merchant Consortium. No known ties save for those required by contract. Named passenger in manifest."
- <Vigilant_GM> "No entries for the rest, my Lord."
- <Vigilant_GM> Before Anzaforr can speak up, you hear the Eldar speak.
- * Timor ([email protected]) has joined
- * Nitrous has quit (Ping timeout)
- <Vigilant_GM> "The Inheritors are native to Thaur. Fanatics who gather artefacts of alien origin. Alien, not of my race, nor yours."
- <Vigilant_GM> "Astrid. They pose a greater threat than may appear. They toy with powers they do not understand."
- * Velam slips his datasalte out, and types out descriptors of the xenos, noting the different inflections and tones it uses to speak in low gothic. "Fascinating." He whispers to himself.
- <Velam> He pauses before asking, "if I may, do you know which alien or xenos race? Or would it be any and all..lord Eldar? Excepting yours of course, as you said."
- <Minoris> "You would do well not to use such titles with the xenos."
- <Minoris> "It is only circumstance that allows for... limited tolerance"
- <Vigilant_GM> "They are ancient, by your standards, and long dead," the Eldar continues, ignoring the Canoness.
- * Thesse staring at the Eldar.
- <Vigilant_GM> At that moment, reality itself appears to shift. You see what you touch. You taste what you see. You hear the scent running through your nostrils.
- <Vigilant_GM> Anzaforr turns to his Seneschal. "Flicker?"
- <Velam> "Only trying to be polite, Cannoness-" The older, though young, man blanches and stops midsentence. "Ohhh God-Emperor, I never get used to that."
- <Thesse> "I don't...I don't so feel."
- <Vigilant_GM> "The Gellar Field," he replies to the Lord-Captain.
- * Karpath notices this but is unaffected by it.
- * Timor feels odd, but fine
- <Vigilant_GM> The Lord-Captain rises, his demeanor changing in an instant. "Alert the bridge of my imminent arrival. Armsmen to stations. Shut all non-essential corridors down."
- * Tony grabs his drink and drinks it
- <Karpath> "Oh boy, that is not good."
- <Timor> "How bad?"
- * Minoris 's stony expression momentarily breaks before recovering
- <Baird> "We are happy to provide assistance in this crisis Lord Captain. How can we help?"
- <Vigilant_GM> Commander Hessiial enters the room, his sabre gripped in his right hand. "Lord-Captain! We have had an incursion!"
- <Karpath> "Could be bad bad, he says to Nitrous."
- * Velam groans
- <Timor> "Time to arm up?"
- <Velam> The savant finishes his rare drink, there's a chance it would be his last.
- * Minoris draws her power sword and boltgun.
- <Minoris> "Point me towards the daemons and they shall see the light of the Emperor"
- <Vigilant_GM> "Emperor protect us..." he turns to you. "Your expertise in these matters will be essential to save my ship and crew. Please, do what you can."
- <Vigilant_GM> "Sir, I am afraid the incursion occurred near the Navigator's Tower. We are scrambling to set up a defense."
- <Baird> "Very well. We'll return to the stateroom and gear up. I will contact you once are ready and you can direct us to where we are needed."
- * Baird turns to the others. "Let's go."
- * Timor get's up to get his equipment
- * Velam nods solemnly before following Baird.
- * Karpath get up and follows Baird to go get his gear.
- * Tony he quickly finishes his drink and follows the party
- * Thesse follows the group to get her equipment.
- <Vigilant_GM> "I will be in the bridge to coordinate matters. Please, Hessiial will take you to the Navigator's Tower. It is where you will be most needed."
- <Vigilant_GM> By now, the Eldar is long-gone. The Captain makes his exit, bolt-gun in hand.
- <Baird> "Very well."
- <Timor> "Hrm."
- <Minoris> "Ready your minds and your bodies for the threat we are about to face"
- <Thesse> "The Emperor is with us."
- * Baird heads to the stateroom to gear up.
- * Minoris accompanies the commander waiting for the others.
- * Tony grabs his Autogun and backpack and is already to go
- * Karpath grabs all is gear and suits up back into his armor.
- * Velam what little of his equipment he left behind and readies himself, this plasma pistol thrumbs in his hand, a welcome feeling.
- * Timor draws his rifle in preperation
- * Minoris ' power sword lights up in unison with the sabre.
- <Vigilant_GM> Minutes later, the levatus doors slide open, and instantly screams, gunshots, and unnatural shrieks assault your senses. Commander Hessiial's sabre turns bright in its power field. "You men! Protect that pass and await reinforcement! Lock down any other entrance not connecting to the barracks!"
- * Thesse draws her hand flamer and chainsword. She lights her Brazier.
- <Vigilant_GM> Far ahead, moving through the air with thick leathery wings the size of Astartes, daemons tear men apart splattering the ceiling, walls, and deck with gore.
- <Tony> "Emperor, preserve us for fighting these beasts again."
- * Karpath has his Boltgun at the ready.
- * Minoris begins muttering prayers, those close to her notice the glow of the power sword seems to be extending past the sword and she begins stepping towards the threat.
- <Thesse> "A spiritu dominatus,
- <Thesse> Domine, libra nos,
- <Thesse> from the lightning and the tempest"
- <Vigilant_GM> Combat shotguns fire into the air to little effect.
- <Thesse> "Our Emperor, deliver us!"
- <Velam> "Emperor deliver us," he intones, his feet shaking.
- <Velam> "Emperor preserve us," He starts to make warding gestures while praying under his breath.
- <Vigilant_GM> After goring its victim, one of the daemons moves impossibly fast right towards the Mother-Canoness.
- <Vigilant_GM> With a sickening leathery snap, the daemon slams against her, claws first, punching through her armor.
- <Vigilant_GM> Another climbs up, flapping its wings, turning in the air to dive at Tony.
- <Minoris> "Stand firm!"
- * Tony pours Autogun fire into the daemon driving at him
- <Vigilant_GM> The Daemon moves with impossible reflexes, dodging the majority of the shots before slamming into the Acolyte with its talons extended.
- * Tony staring at the daemon closing in, he falls back, dropping his Autogun and vomits on the floor as
- * Thesse screams angrily and charges the daemon attack Tony. She slays the beast and let out a blood curdling scream causing fear in her allies.
- <Thesse> "GET UP! GET UP! FOR THE EMPEROR! GET. BACK. UP."
- * Velam takes aim with his plasma pistol at the daemon atop the Cannoness, and squeezes the trigger. The hot ball of plasma hits, alas, it only hits the leg.
- * Karpath moves up a bit keeping his boltgun at the ready.
- <Vigilant_GM> Up ahead, you hear panicked calls as the rending of steel echoes throughout. "The tower! They have breached the tower!"
- * Minoris offended by the gawl of the demon attack her, she proceeds to turn the demon into sashimi with 4 swift strikes.
- * Timor runs up shoots a deamon dead
- <Vigilant_GM> The creature next to Nitrous's quarry howls as it flies straight into the Acolyte.
- <Vigilant_GM> +They are slaughtering the Nobilite personnel!!+
- * Tony begins vomiting violently, unable to control himself.
- * Baird draws his bolt pistols and with a quick burst rips the demon apart showering the nearby Nitrous with a considerable amount of gore.
- <Vigilant_GM> Armsmen arrive in another wave as the levatus doors open. Hessiial leaves his position and leads the formation forward, power sabre in hand. "Push through! Do not let those fucking bats into the inner sanctum!"
- * Thesse leaves Tony after he vomited on her armor and moves towards Timor.
- <Velam> "Stay strong Tony," he says before running up, to follow the priestess.
- * Karpath moves up to see the door open gore everywhere, he then moves up a bit more.
- * Timor stacks up behind the Cannonness
- <Vigilant_GM> Stacked up by the torn blastdoor, Nitrous and the Mother-Canoness can hear the hellish shrieks of the daemons as they shred panicked members of the Navis Nobilite within the tower. It seems from the sounds, that they have already begun to ascend the tower.
- * Tony continues to Vomit, unaware of what is going on
- <Vigilant_GM> Suddenly, the rended blast door is struck with terrifying force by a corpse that splatters through the opening in chunks.
- * Thesse moves up to join the Mother Canoness.
- * Velam stacks up behind the priestess, making more warding gestures.
- <Minoris> "We must hurry lest we be lost in the warp!"
- * Karpath moves up on the door and stacks up with the group
- <Vigilant_GM> As the Mother-Canoness runs through the breach, the sight before her is gruesome indeed. Bodyparts and gore fall from the walls as the dead and dying litter the floor all the way up to the stairs. Here, she begins her ascent as the shrieks and terrified calls for help summon her onwards.
- <Vigilant_GM> Like a ragdoll, the body of a man in the tunic colors of the Navigator House flies down the stairs, striking the rails on the level above. In turn, it bounces awkardly and strikes the Mother-Canoness, throwing her briefly off-balance from which she is able to recover.
- * Tony coughing as he spits out the last of his vomit, he clears his throat and grabs his Autogun as he slowly stands back up and moves slowly forward, looking around wary
- <Vigilant_GM> The leathery flapping of wings a split second before is the only warning the acolytes ascending get before a Daemon is set upon them. Only Baird is able to roll out of the way as it crashes into the other two Acolytes, knocking them back several meters.
- * Thesse walks thru the open in the gates then makes his way to the stairs.
- * Minoris upon taking the hit the Cannoness snaps and begins glowing with righteous fury, the daemon reeling slightly from the holy light.
- * Velam moves up to the door way, noting the daemon up above. He fires his plasma pistol at it, and alas, misses, though just barely.
- * Minoris slices the deamon ontop of her apart while regaining her footing leaving it in three bloody chunks.
- * Timor get's up and moves up
- <Vigilant_GM> At this moment, the walls begin to weep with blood. It pools on every landing, trickling down the steps.
- <Minoris> "RALLY, LET NOT THIS ILLUSION FOOL YOU!"
- * Karpath falls down to the ground and knocks out.
- * Velam yelps in sudden fear, backing away from the entrance to the Navigator's tower. He shakes, fear overwhelming his senses. His servoskulls floating withing inches of him in concern. He begins to mutter, in desperation, catechisms to save himself.
- * Timor starts puking
- <Baird> Realizing his bolt pistols may not be enough Baird draws his plasma and ripper pistols. Making a pinpoint shot with the plasma pistol, the blue energy blast destroys the head and the glowing eye of the navigator. For good measure he unleashes a burst of toxic rounds from the ripper pistol.
- <Vigilant_GM> The cries of a thousand souls fill the tower as slowly the daemonic effects fade away from the tower... only the damage and gore of the all that is material remains.
- <Vigilant_GM> Commander Hessiial calls out to you as he approaches the tower. "What happened? Why have the creatures disappeared?"
- <Vigilant_GM> "Where is the navigator?" he charges up the stairs.
- * Minoris continues up the stairs.
- <Minoris> "Unsure."
- <Vigilant_GM> Hessiial is bloodied, his armor shredded across his chest, blood pooling in his clothes.
- * Timor finishes up puking and get's up
- <Baird> "That is unknown Commander. As for the Navigator...an abomination was taking him over. I couldn't allow the process to culminate, I ended his life."
- * Tony slowly makes his way to the Tower, a bit jumpy but alive
- * Velam feeling a sense of calm overwhelm him, the savant works through several breathing exercises as he moves into the Navigator's tower. +Are the daemons defeated? I do not feel their effects any longer.+
- <Vigilant_GM> "Fuck... fuck!" he cries out, throwing his sabre across the room in frustration.
- * Karpath slowly regains consciousness, "Man, I feel like got hit by a truck."
- <Vigilant_GM> "My Lord... I am afraid the situation is not... not right," he transmits through his commbead.
- <Velam> After some time Velam reaches Baird, and the mess therein. "Ohhhh..."
- <Minoris> "Let us investigate further before we fear the worst, some of the navigators house may yet live."
- <Velam> "I would hope so, Cannoness, if not, we may yet suffer a most terrible fate."
- <Thesse> "What madness..."
- * Tony continues up to the top of the Navigator's Tower looking around at the carnage
- * Karpath get up from his spot and looks around and then makes his way up the stairs. +Is everyone alright?+
- <Vigilant_GM> "Yes, Lord-Captain. I am afraid it appears that way."
- <Timor> +Dinner's gone, but otherwise fine.+
- * Tony he stops then moves towards a vent hatch like he is listening for something
- <Tony> "Sister, Can you open the Hatch?"
- <Minoris> "I can try"
- <Karpath> +Well that's not rare for you. Anyone need medical?+
- <Velam> "Those things....those Daemons." He covers his mouth in horror. He knows, oh he knows their allegiance. Emperor forgive and cleanse his soul.
- <Minoris> "Also do you happen to have a medicae in your ranks I seem to have taken some minor wounds."
- * Tony begins to crawl in trying to follow the noise
- <Timor> +I'm good.+
- <Vigilant_GM> The Canoness and Tony breach the hatch. Indeed, as soon as they do so, they spot movement within the vent.
- * Karpath makes his way over to Minoris.
- <Vigilant_GM> Then, a low glow begins to shine.
- <Minoris> "Is somebody in there, you have nothing to fear"
- <Tony> +Thomas? what is the last name of the Navigator?+
- <Vigilant_GM> As though a light bulb behind a curtain.
- * Timor prepares his rifle
- <Baird> +No idea.+
- * Minoris backs a few feet away from the vent unsure of what is inside.
- <Minoris> "Something is in the vent"
- <Timor> "Yup."
- <Karpath> +I believe it was Ortellius Tony.+
- <Tony> "Hello? Ortellius?
- <Thesse> "Did someone survive the daemon's slaughter?"
- <Minoris> "Unknown, wait"
- <Vigilant_GM> You hear slow, careful movement within.
- <Tony> "Those things are not subtle honoured Sister."
- <Velam> +Any survivors?"+
- <Vigilant_GM> Slowly, the fragile figure of a youth emerges.
- <Vigilant_GM> He wears the colors of House Ortellius.
- <Tony> "It's alright, they are gone"
- <Tony> "Let our light guide you safely."
- <Vigilant_GM> Behind its cloth cover, his navigator's eye still glows.
- * Minoris backs away to not intimidate the child and gestures to Karpath that its probably fine to check her wounds."
- <Vigilant_GM> The boy says nothing. In fact, he barely reacts to your words at all.
- <Vigilant_GM> Commander Hessiial notices this, and immediately becomes protective of the youth. "Back! Everyone get back and give him some room!" he barks at you.
- <Tony> "Steady now, no one wants to harm you, nice and slow."
- * Tony as hearing that he backs up a bit
- <Baird> "Everyone listen to the Commander. Back away slowly."
- <Vigilant_GM> "Arius. Arius, it's me. You're okay. We're all okay," he approaches him, hands extended forward and open to show no threat.
- * Karpath check Minoris out and patches her up. "Well looks like you will be all good Sister."
- * Baird raises his arm and fires a shock bolt to incapacitate the navigator child.
- <Vigilant_GM> "What?!" Hessiial watches the boy fall over, eyes wide. He then turns to Baird, rage across his face.
- <Thesse> "Why would you shoot a child, Raolin?"
- <Baird> "He's just incapacitated Commander. Couldn't risk him causing harm to anyone. Now settle or you'll join him on the floor."
- <Tony> "Woah everyone, take it easy, take it easy, it's just a shock bolt"
- <Thesse> "STILL!"
- <Vigilant_GM> "Just?! You cripple our only shot out of this hellish mess..." he turns around and puts his finger on his vox control.
- <Minoris> "You do not wish to experience the horrors a navigator can inflict on you sister."
- <Karpath> "Would you like me to check on the boy?" He ask.
- <Vigilant_GM> "Medicae personnel to the Navigator's Tower. Now, or I'll vent the fucking deck!"
- <Baird> "We have medicae on hand Commander. Karpath." Baird motions to the downed child.
- * Karpath makes his way over to the child and begins a check on him.
- <Tony> "Commander with all due respect, do you want the child to see all this mess?"
- <Vigilant_GM> Hessiial turns to face Tony, glaring at the acolyte.
- <Vigilant_GM> "Have you any idea what he'll have to face to even try to get us out of this?"
- <Tony> "And not preparing himself for it, is better?
- <Vigilant_GM> Down the hall, you can hear the hurried steps of some dozen people approaching.
- * Karpath is able to cover up the childs third eye and remove the shock arrow along with patching him up. "He should be ok for now, he is just out for now."
- * Baird retrieves the shock bolt from Karpath and stows it.
- <Vigilant_GM> Hessiial, rather than reply, turns and salutes as the Lord-Captain enters.
- * Velam follows the Lord-Captain and his retinue into the large room.
- <Vigilant_GM> "Get him out of here, now" Anzaforr commands.
- * Minoris finally decides it appropriate
- * Karpath backs away to allow for the medical personal to take care of the child now.
- <Vigilant_GM> "I will not let him out of my sight. We take him to my quarters. I want the Mother-Canoness and her compatriots with me, escorting Arius and the medicae personnel."
- <Vigilant_GM> "Hessiial. I want every deck cleared. And find me who is responsible for the Gellar field malfunction."
- <Vigilant_GM> "Sir," the commander salutes as his cuts are treated.
- <Minoris> "Sounds like the best course of action."
- <Minoris> "The life of the child is now the most valuable on this ship"
- * Timor nods
- * Tony shifts as he saw something then speaks up
- <Tony> "Might it be posable to investigate the Gellar Field, maybe they were sloppy and left something behind."
- <Vigilant_GM> With Arius secured to a gurney by the medicae staff, you begin to move down the walkway to the levatus. Along the way are the horrid remains of the warp incursion. Bodies, gore, blood...
- * Velam contiues to bring up the rear of the group.
- <Vigilant_GM> The levatus runes are activated, calling the platform to your level. Anzaforr sighs heavily.
- * Minoris stays as close to the gurney as possible without disturbing the medicae staff.
- <Vigilant_GM> One of the medicae personnel begins to shuffle through his bag for a vitae-reader.
- <Vigilant_GM> The air is putrid with the smell of death as the levatus doors begin to slide open.
- <Vigilant_GM> "Lord-Captain," the voice of one of the medicae menials calls.
- <Vigilant_GM> Anzaforr turns around.
- <Vigilant_GM> He drops the bag, revealing an explosive attacked to his chest. "For Izumat Arisen!"
- * Tony runs and throws himself to protect the child from the blast
- <Vigilant_GM> Mother-Canoness Minoris throws herself against the attacker, tackling him to the ground. In that instant, escorting armsmen pull the Lord-Captain into the levatus, pushing the gurney further in.
- <Vigilant_GM> "Shut the blast door!" another calls to Baird, pointing to the rune panel as the Canoness wrestles the man away from the levatus.
- * Karpath is able to move into the levatus.
- * Timor runs into the levatus
- * Thesse moves into the levatus.
- * Baird moves into the levatus, firing as he goes, attempting to incapacitate the bomber. Once in the levatus he slams his other hand down on the rune panel to shut the blast door.to stow her power sword and boltgun the final afterglow of the battle fading away.
- * Timor stows his rifle
- * Karpath backs away to allow for the medical personal to take care of the child now.
- <Vigilant_GM> "I will not let him out of my sight. We take him to my quarters. I want the Mother-Canoness and her compatriots with me, escorting Arius and the medicae personnel."

- <Vigilant_GM> View of the struggle between the bomber and the Canoness is blocked by the shutting blast door seconds before the levatus goes dark, and your ears ring in a high pitch.
- <Vigilant_GM> The levatus then begins to free-fall several hundred feet before the emergency mechanisms begin to grind it to a violent stop.
