  1. For this project I had to create a title sequence for a fictional film/TV show. I was given the choice between 2 genres, science fiction and horror. The aim was to produce an industry standard composition that would fit into the various specifications that a title sequence relies on.
  2.
  3. Through my initial research I looked into a range of title sequences for films and TV shows, regardless of their genre. I came to the conclusion that the majority of the sequences had some common rules.
  4.
  5. A relatively short length, ranging on average from 40 seconds to 1:20.
  6.
  7. Visual themes that relate to the show itself (For instance The X-Files uses a lot of paranormal and alien imagery which corresponds to what the show is about)
  8.
  9. A soundtrack that fits with the visual elements. This can be applied in 2 ways, the soundtrack itself for a horror movie would have a dark scary style to give the viewer an idea to what the film will be like. But in terms of editing the various scenes in the sequence are usually synced to the soundtrack such as cutting on a beat to help link the two together.
  10.
  11. For my title sequence I chose sci-fi as my genre as I enjoy the genre and I felt like it a more digital and technological style fits the sort of work I'm familiar in making.
  12.
  13. I started with focusing my research into various short films, animations and science fiction shows to try and get a better idea of what my piece would be like. I found....
  14.
  15. ...
  16.
  17. Right away I knew I needed a range of footage that could use for my composition so I researched landmarks in London that could fit into a sci-fi show. I wanted to choose futuristic looking architecture as I know London has various buildings constructed out of metal and glass, as well as having abstract, almost alien looking design.
  18.
  19. Some locations include...
  20.
  21. With a plan of the locations I planned to film in I made a journey into London to visit these locations and capture the footage that I would use in my project.
  22.
  23. ...
  24.
  25. Starting with my title sequence I used Adobe After Effects due to it being an industry standard tool that would be ideal for creating this project. Through my research of a visual style one thing I really liked the idea of was some sort of high-tech computer screen covered in numbers, graphs and holographic displays.
  26.
  27. It was through this idea that I developed a title for the show, "CYBERSTASIS".
  28.
  29. With this name in mind, and an idea to the style of the sequence I looked on a range of copyright free song websites, searching specifically for an electronic/techno song
  30.
  31. I wanted to base my project off this, with the camera panning over one of these displays alluding to the themes of Cyberstasis. Showing off scans of a human body, statistics about humanity and CCTV camera feeds which would show off the footage I had recorded myself.
  32.
  33. One core part to my project would be the use of these visual elements to which I found a resource of science fiction display elements which were a perfect fit for my project, so I ended up purchasing a license which would allow me to legally use them in my work.
  34.
  35. Over the course of several days I composed my project, creating what I imagined a high-tech display would look like. This being a TV show I made sure to include a list of credits for names, producers, director, which I integrated into the display making them stand out and be projected above  the screen, almost holographically.
  36.
  37. Once the displays were constructed I had a camera pan across the display moving from one side to the other, to give a sense that the screen was a physical object.
  38.
  39. My sequence was composed of 2 scenes, the two being linked together by a cut which synced to the soundtrack.
  40.
  41. Once completed a used a few effects to give a more final look to the scenes, a grid was placed onto the screen to act as a pixelated display, a glow effect was also used to make the display have an effect where it looked like it was actually emmiting light, one other major effect was the use of a depth-blur to allow the scene to look like it had actual scale as if the background was out of focus from the camera.
