  1. So, i've been reading a lot about accessibility of games on twitter,
  2.
  3. I've kept quiet my opinion until i felt like i was satisfied or just hit a point where my opinion won't change.
  4.
  5. It is, in the end, just an opinion. If you don't like it then be my guest and leave me alone :D.
  6.
  7. I want to start of i'm not in any way badly disabled but i do have the following issues :
  8. - My back hurts to a point i barely can move when i push it too far
  9. - My right shoulder is permanantly damaged things like mashing and/or a fast succession of differents inputs start to hurt
  10. - I can be dumb time to time (it's a joke but it'll play a part in my argument later on)
  11.
  12. Let's start by saying the following :"I'm totally in favor of making games accessible".
  13.
  14. But i have A LOT of issues on how people want to make things accessible.
  15.
  16. My mindset about people that have any kind of handicap is the following : "Do not ever help them unless it becomes a necessity".
  17. People will probably react with "HOW DARE YOU NOT HELP DISABLED PEOPLE". I'm sure it'll happen ... don't say you won't i know you are there behind your little keyboard waiting to throw your answer even though you are not even through half my pastebin.
  18. I get that from my mom and i'm glad about it. I want to do things the way i want and by myself the most i can until i just can't anymore. I hate being helped because i'm not sad that i can't do things and i think everyone should be a bit like that (not fully because other wise everyone would get bored and team games wouldn't be at thing XD)
  19.
  20. The thing is, for exemple, someone that can't see, i will let him walk away. Because if he is actually lost, he will ask. Same thing with people that have any kind of leg or hand/arm disability. They might not be able to do something ? They'll find a way to do it. It's probably something belgian have, who knows but it's the general feeling of every single disabled person i've encountered in my life.
  21.
  22. And i want to apply this to video games. What should be accessibility for video games ? Being able to rebind your keys, make sure that every single controller work (the best you can at least) to give plenty options and (if the game needs it) a visual accessibility.
  23.
  24. Something i'm not totally for is difficulty becoming an accessibility tool if your main focus is gameplay.
  25. If you are a game dev and you want your game focus to be an experience or story telling then you should make sure that difficulty is an accessibility tool BUT when your focus is gameplay and that the game experience revolves around the difficulty of your game ? Then you probably should not do that.
  26. I know i'm going to make enemies with that statement but you know what ? I don't care if you start hating me for this :D.
  27.
  28. Why am i throwing this now ? I'm a huge fan of difficult games. A list of hard games i love : Diablo 2, Path of Exile, Dark Souls Series, SHMup, Old School Mega Man games and some of those (mainly the Dark souls series and through Sekiro most recently)are getting trashed for their difficulty that makes them not accessible... you know what ? Shit dude that's the main reason those exist, because they are hard, the only reason they make a good experience is because THEY ARE HARD. Story, background info and the style of the game ARE GOD DAMN SECONDARY STUFF. I'm pretty sure you don't give a shit about bullet hells shmup that not even 1% of gamers could even think to finish.
  29.
  30. My point is : "A mono difficulty system IS a gameplay mechanic". If you are not happy about it then it's probably not a question of accessibility but a matter of you not liking what the devs made. You know what's a great accessibility tool actually ? People streaming the game for them to share an experience you can't play.
  31.
  32. An exemple from a different art (warning i'm harsh on purpose). THE CINEMA. I don't have a film in mind but let's say our average viewer sitting in the cinema is the dumbest person on earth about film stuff and the film he is watching is one of the hardest film to understand because you need some knowledge about history, a previous film aaaaaaaaand other informations. He is not going to enjoy the film and either will say "Worst film in existance" or "I couldn't enjoy the film because i know nothing. And let's not talk about abstract art which is probably an event better exemple but i can't talk about it because i just don't understand it.
  33.
  34. Do you really think you should make the film dumber so that person can understand it ?
  35. Should we stop people of making dancing game because people can't dance ?
  36. Should we stop creating song because people can't sing or can't hear them ?
  37. Should we make only dumb film (hello marvel) so everyone can understand them ?
  38. Should we go back in time to make nes and snes game easier ?
  39. Should we remove abstract art because we, mere mortals, can't understand it ?
  40. HELL NO.
  41.
  42. To me, hard games are a kind of game. If you don't like the fact they are not accessible (and maybe one day i'll have so much issues with my right shoulder that i won't be able to play them anymore?) then just shut up. If a family friendly/easy enough/difficulty scaling game is not accessible ? then go tell it directly to the devs and make arguments about it in the friendliest manner possible. They not have thought about it because disability is not the most common thing on earth.
  43.
  44. My mom can't walk more than 100 meters before having to go back home should we sue the city because my mom doesn't have a market at proximity of her house ? heck no.
  45.
  46. My point is, stop being a douche to hard games because it's their main focus and instead of just throwing random point of view about accessibility go talk to the god damn devs or have some balls and use the god damn @ function on twitter.
  47.
  48. If you start hating me for this i don't care :D but don't come throw your stuff at me it'll fall into deaf ear.
  49.
  50. Please have a nice day ^^. Difficutly is part of life and some games represent it well, let them be.
