  1. As he reached the ship he realized that there was
  2. no time for decompression stops or anything similar.
  3. Without air, these men were going to die.
  4.
  5. Hopefully, the water inside wasn't pressurized.
  6. Clark's greatest fear was that by moving the ship
  7. he was going to somehow break a delicate seal and
  8. force icy cold water to flood into the hold, killing the
  9. men inside almost instantly.
  10.
  11. He closed his eyes for a moment as he touched the
  12. hull and did something he hadn't done since he was a
  13. child. He prayed.
  14.

  16.
  17. The voices on the other end of the line had gone
  18. silent at last, and even the people in the newsroom
  19. were somber.
  20.
  21. After no explosion had occurred, there had been
  22. conflicting reports by crews of the different ships, but
  23. even those seemed to have died down by this point.
  24.
  25. As drama, it was every newscaster's dream. Lois
  26. had no doubt that the ratings were going to be
  27. enormous. Yet the people in the newsroom looked
  28. stunned.
  29.
  30. Kendall had been one of their own, someone
  31. they'd known personally.
  32.
  33. Lois frowned and reached for the telephone. She'd
  34. send flowers to the studio as a gesture of respect.
  35. Kendall had struck her as a good man, and she knew
  36. he'd been well liked by his peers.
  37.
  38. She didn't know any of the camera crew who had
  39. been with him, but the MSNBC people likely would
  40. know them.
  41.
  42. She couldn't find the telephone book in the mess
  43. the agents had left. She spared a thought for Clark
  44. Kent, who still hadn't returned, and she wondered if
  45. he'd made his way into an outside hall.
  46.
  47. It was the shouting by the Alaskan reporter that
  48. alerted her that something unusual was happening.
  49. The camera rushed to the edge of the boat, where
  50. crew were standing and staring over the port bow.
  51. Below, through the darkened water, could be seen
  52. a massive shape. Borne along on what looked like a
  53. massive bubble of air was the form of the Celeste
  54. Marie.
  55.
  56. It exploded out of the water and somehow
  57. managed to flip before coming to float on the choppy
  58. seas.
  59.
  60. The crews on all of the ships rushed into action,
  61. leaving the Alaskan reporter slack jawed in
  62. amazement. He recovered quickly however, and
  63. turned to the camera. This was going to be his moment
  64. to shine.
  65.
  66. "I ... don't have any explanation for all this," he
  67. said. "But seeing is believing. What we are seeing now
  68. is a rescue operation in action. There is no way to tell
  69. what condition the men inside the Celeste Marie may
  70. be in, but they are likely to be suffering from hypoxia,
  71. hypothermia, and possible injuries relating both to the
  72. initial accident, and to this recent miraculous
  73. reemergence."
  74.
  75. He was silent for a moment as his cameraman got
  76. footage of men scrambling down into rescue boats that
  77. were even now racing toward the newly righted ship.
  78.
  79. "All we know right now is that somebody's
  80. prayers were answered."
  81.
  82. ***
  83.
  84. Gasping for breath, Clark broke the surface of the
  85. water. It had taken all the air in his lungs and more to
  86. move the entire boat without putting too much
  87. pressure on any one part.
