  4. I'm finally participating in this year's Krusie week.
  5. I present to you, the first of my Krusie week shorts:
  6.
  7. "Apples"
  8. By Greenswordsman
  9. ___________
  10.
  11. The sound of pouring water hissed out of the open bathroom door. Along with it came the moist air bearing the distinct aromas of soaps and clean hair. It was even thicker and sweeter past the door, where Kris and Susie kneeled over the rim of the bathtub.
  12.
  13. The human gently ran the shower head wand over the dragoness’ thick brown locks as if it were a brush with liquid bristles, each brushstroke removing another deluge of white, fragrant suds. All the while, Susie purred, her grip on the bathtub tightening and relaxing with each pass of the steaming hot water. It was lucky that there was water dripping down her face, or else Kris would have noticed the excessive drool pouring from her lips. Susie didn’t even notice it herself.
  14.
  15. The soapy water running through her locks was already soothing the dragon, but the feeling of Kris’ fingers scratching and rubbing her scalp was flooring her. The way his fingertips gently pulled and pushed, unraveled tension, and soothed her itches made her sigh out loud.
  16.
  17. Kris had a cheeky idea to tease her for it, but discarded it. There was no need to undercut this. No need to interrupt her bliss. The Kris that started this school year wouldn’t have dreamed of seeing Susie like this, content, cooing, genuinely happy, to say nothing of being so happy around and because of him. That thought put a smile on the human’s face that just wouldn’t go away.
  18.
  19. At last, the third round of shampoo had run its course. Kris and Susie exchanged a look that carried a silent agreement: enough of his shampoo had been spent, but their shared smile said that he could rub her scalp a little longer.
  20. -
  21. Fifteen minutes did little to quell the steam that had built up in the bathroom, so Kris set it slightly more ajar before returning to his friend.
  22.
  23. “Oh come on dude, your mom won’t freak out.” Susie grumbled with a smile, patting the seat beside her as if to beckon Kris.
  24.
  25. The boy needed no encouragement to take his seat beside her. Their arms set around each other before the cushion stopped bouncing. “Yeah, well, don’t wanna risk it. Mold and all.” Susie replied with an indistinct mumble, having already forgotten to care. The feeling of Kris’ prodding nose sifting through her freshly cleaned locks was sending shivers down her spine.
  26.
  27. “Woah…” The dragon shivered, pressing the human’s head further in almost as if on instinct. “Kris, you… wow, dude. Going straight for the gold, huh?”
  28.
  29. “Mmm…” Kris didn’t bother with the quip. He noticed how shaky his friend’s voice was and knew it wasn’t a protest. “I see why you love it when I use this shampoo.”
  30.
  31. The boy’s head was filled with the sweet fragrance of apples and cinnamon. The shampoo’s perfume wafted around him and intermingled with Susie’s own natural scent, fresh and clean, but still distinct and pleasant. She smelt like pine, and freshly washed, her scent distilled into autumn bramble. The generous hint of apple only added to it, bringing to Kris’ mind the imagery of hot apple pie on a crisp, cold day. The thought however, was all but pleasant background noise to what was inciting it. The reality of feeling Susie’s beautiful, bountiful hair in his hands and all over his face was so much better than fresh pie, and so he basked in it all the more.
  32.
  33. He did so with eagerness and not a shred of shame over how much he was indulging himself, but only because Susie was indulging herself too.
  34. -
  35. Kris’ apple scent was five hours older, and his natural scent had more thoroughly admixed therein, but if anything, that just made it better in Susie’s mind. Kris’ natural smell was wonderful. There was a mild gingery tang to it that blended with the apple shampoo to perfection. She had been enjoying his scent since before they were even friends, though of course, back then, she would have rather died than admit it. That, however, was practically a lifetime ago, and it had only been three months. In those three months, she had gotten to know this boy, this weird, dorky, amazing boy for everything he was, and that was what really made his scent so much sweeter.
  36.
  37. She no longer cared if she sounded mushy, even if it chanced a tease from Kris. “Dude, you smell so good.” She sighed, rubbing the tip of her snout all over the human’s soft scalp. “So, so good.”
  38.
  39. “Look who’s talking!” Where Susie was placid and near drooling, Kris was barely containing himself, smiling ear to ear and rubbing his face in Susie's hair and shoulder with a happy eagerness that didn’t wane. “Susie, you smell even better with this stuff than I do!”
  40.
  41. “Pfft. Nah dude.” It was rare that they’d get in a reverse one-upping contest, but she secretly enjoyed these just a little more than their normal competitions. “You smell freakin’ good.”
  42.
  43. It was a crass compliment, but the crassness didn’t register to Kris. That was just how his girl operated. All that he heard was the sentiment behind it, and it only flushed his cheeks further.
  44.
  45. “Love your hair, Kris…”
  46.
  47. “Mmnn… Susie…”
  48.
  49. “So soft.”
  50.
  51. He hugged her ever tighter, almost completely enveloping his head in the dragon’s mane. “Can we just… do this all day until we get sick of it?”
  52.
  53. “Ahaha! Oh yeah, Kris. But be warned…” Susie chuckled and sighed all at once. “That might take a little while.”
  54.
  55. Kris took yet another deep, languid huff of his best and closest friend.
  56.
  57. “Sounds good to me.”
