- Nightlight
- >you are Nightlight
- >mommy says you have very pretty blue fluff and a pretty green mane
- >and you’re trying your best to take sleepies
- >but it’s not easy
- >there’s a great big monster in your safe room
- >your safe room has become a monster room
- >and while you can’t quite see the monster, you know he’s there
- >he made a sound not long ago
- >it was a loud baby noise, kind of
- >it hurt your ears, since it sounded like a fluffy baby crying
- >that’s usually enough to hurt any fluffy’s ears, but this was like a really big crying fluffy baby
- >anyway, you’re curled up in your bed, waiting for the monster to appear
- >you’re supposed to be taking sleepies, so you can’t let mommy know about the monster
- >she’d save you, of course, but then she’d be mad
- >and making mommy mad would be something that a bad fluffy would do
- >so you stand your ground
- >or, rather, you curl of in your little fluffy bed, hiding under a big blanket
- >it’s very soft, and warm
- >no monster can get through that!
- >as long as you stay under the blanket, you’re safe
- >but, sadly, your curiosity gets the better of you
- >you poke your head out from under the blanket to see if the monster’s still there
- >he is!
- >you can see him just in front of you!
- >you shout, scream and cry, before running to the door of the safe room
- >banging on it with your little hoofsies doesn’t make it open
- >why won’t it open?!
- >if it doesn’t open, the monster will get you
- >so you pound and pound and pound, when suddenly the door flies open
- >and right in front of you is mommy!
- >”Nightlight? What’s with all the noise?”
- >through your tears, you tell her all about the monster
- >mommy listens to your story very carefully, and nods her head a few times
- >”Well then, I guess I’ll have to do something about the monster.”
- >mommy goes over to right where the monster was!
- >before you can warn her, yell, try to stop her, or anything else, she’s already next to the monster!
- >she reaches down, her arm just out of your view
- >she rummages around…
- >and grabs the monster!
- >mommy pulls the monster up off the floor, and holds it up in the air
- >the monster has eight very long arms, huge eyes, and even some silly fluff
- >wait, silly fluff?
- >you take another look
- >why, it’s just Mr. Wiggles, your favorite toy!
- >”Oh, Nightlight. It’s just your plush octopus. Not a monster.”
- >mommy puts Mr. Wiggles in your bed, and you crawl in with him, giving a tiny sniffle as your scared saddie water goes away
- >”Mummah? Nigh’wite sowwy.”
- >”That’s alright, sweetie. I understand. Do you want the Monster-Go-Away Glow?”
- >you nod, as fast as you can
- >the monster-go-away glow makes the monsters go away
- >mommy pulls the little buzzy thing from her pocket, and rubs it all over you
- >you feel a little tingly, and soon enough, you see the monster-go-away glow
- >you thank mommy profusely, and she gives you a little kiss on your sniffer
- >she leaves, and closes the door behind her
- >you give Mr. Wiggles huggies, and start to fall asleep, glad that no monsters can get you now
- >”Buh-bye, munstahs…”
- >and, with that, you take sleepies
- -----------------------------------------
- >you are Dr. Carolyn Monroe, a prolific scientist in your community
- >ever since fluffy ponies came out, they’ve been your main focus of experimentation
- >you’d usually pick them up from a shelter, or get them off the street, but Nightlight is the first fluffy you’ve had since birth
- >she’s a successful attempt at fluffies with hollow fluff
- >much like a polar bear, this breed of fluffies has hollow hairs, allowing for more aerodynamic traits
- >you’ve observed a 0.12 mile per hour increase in fluffy pony racers
- >not much, but enough to quantify a grant and further research
- >anyway, like you were saying, Nightlight has hollow fluff
- >she also suffers from a little phenomenon called nocturnal hallucinations
- >basically, at night, she sees things that aren’t there
- >that, or she sees things that are there, and mistakes them for monsters
- >since she’s just a little fluffy pony, she doesn’t quite understand that what she sees in the dark aren’t real, nor are they monsters
- >so, you decided to try something a little different
- >without going too far into detail, what you basically did was fill the spaces in her hollow fluff with a variant of neon, and capped the hairs through a process known as “pinching them shut”
- >seriously, it was as easy as that
- >furthermore, when you connected a small electrical source, such as a battery, you could make the fluff glow a bright blue hue
- >you had to make sure not to use anything more potent than a cell battery, as a higher voltage might end up re-opening the seals or potentially singeing Nightlight
- >so, she glows, not unlike a night light
- >where else would she have gotten the name?
- >the tiny amounts of neon, paired with the low voltage battery, only let the fluff glow for about five to ten minutes at the most
- >but if it can manage to give Nightlight a little cone of vision to take away the hallucinations and give her peace of mind before she falls asleep, then your experiment is a success
- >you plop down at your desk, typing up a short idea for a new test
- >Experiment #528: Giving a sea fluffy an anglerfish lightbulb.
