1. >you are Bright Sky
2. >you are a unicorn mare enrolled in the Reich Military Academy
3. >more specifically, in it's experimental wing
4. >ever since you first became a student/recruit at the school, you've been taught how to operate all of the next generation weaponry that will seen be seeing combat
5. >among these are the new machine guns, pistols, and artillery
6. >however, there is one which you are only now being taught about
7. >the tanks, or panzers, as some call them
8. >to be honest, you can't wait to become a commander of one the new tanks
9. >but alas, you have to take special classes before you can even touch one of the things
10. >in fact, that's where you are right now
11. >the professor at the front of your room paces, asking review questions
12. >"Now, who can tell me the biggest advantage of the tank?"
13. >a pony at the front of the room raises her hoof
14. >"Yes, Glow?"
15. >>"The biggest advantage of the tank is it's mobility!"
16. >the professor smiles
17. >"Correct! Now, can you tell me WHY that's such an advantage?"
18. >the mare's face drops
19. >"I, uhhhh..."
20. >you sigh and raise your hoof
21. >"Yes, Bright; why is mobility important?"
22. "Mobility is important because it allows us to more easily encircle the enemy and cut them off from supplies and reinforcements."
23. >"Excellent!"
24. >the professor throws a piece of candy to you
25. >you halfheartedly catch it
26. >you swear that this professor must have taught foals before, given how he rewards correct answers
27. >you begin to space out as the class drags on
28. >don't worry Bright, finals are only a week away
29.
30. >you are Golden Archer, a unicorn mare
31. >and you're loving your time at the Reich Military Academy!
32. >you enrolled in the gunnery section of the experimental wing of the academy
33. >you've gotten to shoot machine guns, disassemble and assemble different weapons, shoot pistols, and shoot more machine guns
34. >unfortunately, there is a lot of reading involved too...
35. >like Schulleiter Red Ink says, ponies cannot be trusted with these weapons if they don't know them inside and out
36. >but no worries, that will be over soon, seeing as finals are just a week away!
37. >you've not yet had a bad grade, so you're not particularly worried
38. >still, you want to make sure that you get to become a tank operator
39. >the only thing better than being allowed to work with all these cool guns is the ability to serve Lord Manos
40. >you know just as well as anyone else in the academy that the tanks are the future of warfare
41. >their ability to hit the Royalists hard and fast is what will win this war, you're sure of it
42. >unfortunately, you have not yet even been allowed to get close to one of the tanks, let alone climb inside one
43. >no, that has to wait until you meet the requirements to become a tank operator
44. >the requirements being that you pass all the classes necessary to be 'proficient' in the use of all of the Reich's other advanced weapons
45. >including the new Talon artillery
46. >boy, those things sure are loud
47. >you personally hope that you're assigned to one of the newer tanks equipped with a variant of that gun
48. >but you'll have to wait
49. >you have a final to ace
50.
51. >you are Steady Wheel, a pegasus stallion
52. >like many other advanced-level students at the Academy, you are enrolled in the 'experimental' programs
53. >of course, this means working with all of the new weapons the Reich has to offer
54. >but, you are only really interested in one
55. >the tank
56. >and of course that's the one thing you haven't been allowed to work with yet
57. >you grew up in Vanhoover, son to a pair of wealthy merchants
(Oy Vey)
who wanted you to carry on the family business
58. >this included learning how to pilot nearly every kind of vessel in existence
59. >when you first heard of Lord Manos, you were skeptical, like most ponies were at first you imagine
60. >but as time passed, and you heard more about him, the more you realized that the old system had to die
61. >Equestria cannot be entrusted to a single family (one of which nearly destroyed the land)
62. >you of course kept these thoughts away from your parent
63. >but a confrontation ultimately came when the war began
64. >and they insisted you enlist in the Royal Navy
65. >it was at this point that you 100% made up your mind,
66. >and defected to the Reich
67. >it was shortly after you arrived that you first witnessed the glorious metal machines
68. >you rushed to the academy shortly afterwards to enlist
69. >when you had presented your records of academic history to the Academy, they questioned why you didn't want to enroll in the new maritime classes
70. >you merely insisted upon the experimental courses
71. >you can imagine that they would have denied your request if your transcript wasn't as good as it was
72. >but that's all in the past
73. >what matters is now and the future
74. >the future of the Reich
75. >the future you hope to help build
76. >now, you naturally decided to take the prerequisite classes needed in order to become a driver of one of the machines
77. >surely it cant be much different from a boat
78. >right?
79.
80. >you are Sugar Bee, an earthpony mare
81. >you are an Apple
82. >yeah, what are the odds of that, right?
83. >anyway, you are enrolled in the experimental wing of the Reich Military Academy
84. >now whenever you tell anyone who you are, they always wonder how you ended up where you are
85. >it all started back when you lived on a....
86. >just take a guess as to where you lived, seriously
87. >a farm, what a shocker
88. >anyway, you were a beekeeper back on the farm, hence your cutie mark: a bee buzzing above a pile of sugar
89. >however, you also had an unusual hobby
90. >you liked to build gadgets
91. >everything you built was intended to help make the workload easier on the farm
92. >unfortunately, most just saw your creations as wastes of time and resources
93. >even your brother, Cider Guzzler
94. >last you heard, he left the farm and joined the Royal Navy
95. >but that was after you left
96. >you left the farm because you knew that the Reich would better appreciate your abilities
97. >plus, it helped that Lord Manos proved himself to be a much better leader than the princesses
98. >anyway, you didn't have much of an academic record, so you presented a few of your creations to the academy staff
99. >you were expecting them to laugh at you just like your family
100. >but instead, they were intrigued by what they saw
101. >particularly the device you made to put bees to sleep to make honey extraction easier
102. >you almost cried when they decided to admit you into the experimental wing, where, as they said, "your gifts would be best put to use."
103. >after a few weeks, you understood what they meant
104. >you have been taking classes on the mechanical upkeep of all of these new weapons the Reich is making
105. >including the new tanks
106. >these are by far the trickiest, because they have a complicated power sourse
107. >an 'internal combustion engine'
108. >still, you didn't have much difficulty getting used to the technology, and you are now planning on becoming a 'loader' on one of these tanks after you graduate, given that they also serve as the tank's mechanic
109.
110. >you are Bright Sky
111. >and finals are finally here!
112. >if you pass, you'll be made a Lieutenant
113. >after that, all you have to do is a few weeks of tank training with a crew
114. >after that, graduation
115. >as you sit in your room, you can feel the tension in the air
116. >clearly, you're one of the few that is ready for this
117. >as the professor walks around handing out the test packets, you can tell that he too senses this tension
118. >"Remember, complete sentences on the short answer portion."
119. >he finally hands you your packet
120. >you waste no time in writing your name at the top before reading the first few questions
121. >the first half of the packet asks leadership questions
122. >the second half features a topographic map and gives you several scenarios, and asks what you should do in each one
123. >you smile
124. >this is going to be a piece of cake
125. >you get to work filling out the answers for the first half
126.
127. >you are Golden Archer
128. >and you're busy taking your final
129. >the packet mainly asks questions about tank weaponry, but also has questions about squad-based machine guns and artillery
130. >easy stuff
131. >you shouldn't have any trouble acing this
132.
133. >you are Steady Wheel
134. >your final asks a lot of weird questions
135. >for example: 'What do you do if you come across another friendly tank at a 4-way intersection?'
136. >oh well, you suppose it's to help avoid unnecessary accidents
137.
138. >you are Sugar Bee
139. >and your final is unique
140. >for your final, you are instructed to fix a damaged engine
141. >you weren't told what was wrong with it, so you have to figure that out
142. >as you sit at the table with the engine, you look up at the clock
143. >you have two hours to do this
144. >you take a deep breath and begin to examine the different components
145.
146. >you are Bright Sky
147. >and today is the day!
148. >today is the day that the results from the finals are returned
149. >also, if you've passed,
150. >it's the day you're assigned your new rank and command
151. >you hurry from your dorm down to the main lobby of the academy, where dozens of other ponies are already gathered
152. >on a large bulletin board, all of the results are pinned
153. >of course, all the ponies are crowded around the board, trying to find their results
154. >you grumble before moving pushing your way through the crowd
155. >after a bit, you're at the front
156. >you begin to scan your eyes across the different sheets of paper
157. >you just need to find yours, and then you can get out of the way
158. >just gotta keep looking....
159. >there it is!
160. >you quickly snatch the paper from the board before retreating back to the rear of the crowd
161. >alright, now let's see how you did
162. >hmm, A in maths, A+ in writing
163. >those don't matter, and you know it
164. >A- in tank commanding 101
165. >WHAT?
166. >and A-?!
167. >'Overall very good tactician, but needs work on pony skills' (stand-in for 'people skills')
168. >What? How could your professor think that you need work on skills?
169. >anyway, you passed, and that's all that matters
170. >you read the bottom of the page
171. >'any ponies who passed tank commanding 101 with a B+ or higher are to report to the assembly grounds by 11:00'
172. >you look up at the clock
173. >10:35
174. >oh buck
175. >you run out the front doors of the academy and race towards the grounds located all the way on the other end of the city
176. >may Manos help you get there on time
177.
178. >you are Sugar Bee
179. >and you passed your final!
180. >it sure is a good thing that you still wake up at the crack of dawn every morning, like back on the farm
181. >because your test results said that anyone who passed tank mechanics 101 had to report to the assembly grounds by 11:00
182. >anyway, so you were the first pony to show up
183. >the officers leading what you guess will be a ceremony were surprised to find that a pony had arrived before they did
184. >but their surprise quickly vanished when you mentioned your family name
185. >it's odd
186. >back in Equestria, most ponies looked down upon Apples
187. >here though, everyone seems to respect the family's love of the land
188. >and their, uhh..
189. >fertility
190. >ANYWAY, as more and more students arrive to the grounds, it becomes clear that it's not just mechanics gathering
191. >it's students from all the tank crew classes
192. >commanders, gunners, drivers, and loaders/mechanics (you)
193. >all organized into their respective groups
194. >as the clock hits 11:00, what appears to be the head officer opens her mouth to speak
195. >"You are gathered here today, to-"
196. >>"Sorry I'm late!"
197. >a bright orange pony runs onto the field
198. >the mare has a cutie mark depicting a bright sun against a clear sky
199. >she is quick to join the group of tank commanders
200. >you smirk to yourself
201. >you do not envy whoever gets assigned to her tank
202.
203. >you are Bright Sky
204. >and you made it to the grounds just as the officer began speaking
205. >now, she starts over
206. >"As I was saying.."
207. >she looks at you
208. >"You are gathered here today because you have passed your exams."
209. >she looks over the different groups assembled
210. >"You ponies shall have the distinction of being the first official class of dedicated tank crewponies, or panzerpferde, to graduate from these hallowed halls."
211. >she looks over to the other officials gathered to her side
212. >"But no one would know this better than your own Schulleiter, Red Ink."
213. >you and your fellow students applaud as he steps up to the podium
214.
215. >you are Red Ink
216. >and today is a big day
217. "Now, I'm sure that many of you are beginning to catch onto the fact that this is your graduation ceremony."
218. >you can tell that the ponies are full of questions, but they remain silent
219. "I'm also sure that you are wondering why you aren't at the same ceremony as every other student in the academy."
220. >you continue
221. "The answer is simple, you are not normal students. You are the elite of this academy."
222. >you point your hoof off in the direction of the students
223. "And soon you will be the elite of our army, of our very society!"
224. >you continue to hold your hoof out
225. "You ponies have earned this! THEY however,"
226. >you change the direction of your hoof towards Canterlot
227. "They believe that blood is law, not hard work!"
228. >you draw your hoof in and slam it against the wooden podium
229. "You will show them the error of their ways!"
230. >you feel like you are about to start choking up
231. "You will being honor to the Reich, and earn your places in Valhalla!"
232. >you take a few moments to collect yourself before extending your hoof out
233. "I believe in you, I always have. Sieg Heil!"
234. >the field echoes with the cries of the students
235. >"Heil!"
236.
237. >you are Steady Wheel
238. >you really enjoyed Schulleiter Red Ink's speech
239. >but alas, good things can never last long
240. >immediately afterwards, you and your fellow drivers were each given a number, and ordered to report to the respective tank garages with the same numbers
241. >your number was 14 out of maybe 80 or so
242. >you were quick to leave the assembly grounds after that
243. >you have a new life ahead of you
244. >luckily, the garages aren't far from the grounds, so it didn't take you long to get there
245. >the overall 'tank grounds' (as everyone calls them) take up a great deal of space
246. >the garages alone take up a huge amount of land, there are nearly 100 of them, after all
247. >it reminds you of how you used to be in a youth group, and how every year the entire organization would gather together at a camp, where hundreds of tents would be pitched to accommodate nearly 1000 colts and fillies
248. >all of these garages grouped tightly together remind you of those seas of tents from your youth
249. >opposite the garages is a large flat dirt field, where you guess the tanks do their exercises
250. >you begin to walk along the first row of garages
251. "Lets, see... 12, 13...."
252. >there it is!
253. "14."
254. >the garage is basically a large cubic rectangle, with a big overhead door taking up most of the front face
255. >to the left of the large door is a much smaller, normal door.
256. >you walk up and turn the handle before opening the smaller door
257. >you slowly take your first steps into your new life
258.
259. >you are Golden Archer
260. >you were the first to show up to your garage
261. >Garage #14, to be specific
262. >when you first showed up, you took a few minutes to just bask in the glory of the building
263. >the overall layout is very simple
264. >the garage is a two-story building
265. >the first floor is dedicated entirely to what will encompass yours and your fellow crewmate's jobs
266. >most of the first floor is a simple garage floor, minus the various toolboxes and tables scattered around
267. >at the center of the room is, of course, A FREAKING TANK
268. >of the maybe 10 minutes you've been here, about 7 of those minutes have been spent practically drooling at the machine
269. >the first thing you noticed is that the tank is not at all like the ones you've seen
270. >in fact, you've never seen this kind before, it's significantly smaller than the newer ones you've been seeing
271. >yet it's bigger than the first model
272. "Ohhh, this is so cool!"
273. >you were quick to make mental notes on the gun mounted in the turret
274. >it looks like a big machine gun
275. "Ooohhh boy, we're going to have so much fun with this thing!"
276. >suddenly, you hear the garage door shut behind you
277. >you turn to see a bright orange mare standing there
278. >wait a second...
279. >it's the same mare that was late to the assembly earlier!
280. >she was standing with the tank commanders, which you guess makes her your boss now
281. >you raise your hoof to your forehead
282. "Greetings, commander!"
283. >you then look back at the tank
284. "Pretty cool, huh?"
285.
286. >another pony walks in behind the mare
287. >this one is a navy blue stallion
288. >the orange mare speaks
289. >"Sorry I'm late, I was talking with... uhhhhh.."
290. >she looks back at the stallion
291. >>"Steady Wheel, ma'am."
292. >"Right, I was talking with Steady Wheel here."
293. >Steady adds on
294. >>"Yeah, I was 'this' close to walking in, but then she stopped me to ask me a few questions first."
295. >the orange mare then turns back to you
296. >she begins talking as she walks closer to the tank
297. >"Please excuse me, my name is Bright Sky. I am the commander of this new team."
298. >you nod
299. "I gathered that."
300. >the mare observes the tank and answers your original question
301. >"Yes, it is indeed.... cool."
302. >you can imagine that she's also noticing how it seems to be a new model
303. >>>"Sorry I'm late, ya'll."
304. >now there's a light brown mare walking through the door
305. >the commander looks at the newcomer
306. >"Alright, now that we're all here, let's get introductions out of the way."
307. >she holds her chin high
308. >"I am Bright Sky, I am your commander."
309. >you roll your eyes at her display before chiming in
310. "Golden Archer. I'm a gunner."
311. >the stallion speaks
312. >>"Steady Wheel, driver."
313. >finally, the brown mare declares
314. >>>"The names Sugar Bee. I'm your loader."
315. >Bright smiles
316. >"I'm happy to meet all of you; I'm sure that we're going to do great things together for our beloved Reich."
317.
318. >you are Sugar Bee
319. >and it looks like you were the last to arrive
320. >that's a shame, you were hoping to inspect the tank without anyone else there
321. >oh well, it's always nice to meet new ponies
322. >except for your commander
323. >the one who was late to the assembly
324. >yeah... you definitely jinxed yourself there
325. >"I'm happy to meet all of you; I'm sure that we're going to do great things together for out beloved Reich."
326. >well, at least she seems like a nice pony
327. >you've never had difficulty working with ponies in the past, she shouldn't be any different
328. >you look up at the tank in the center of the room
329. >oh wow, it's a new model
330. >you'll really have to inspect it, seeing as it's different from what you were trained to repair
331. "Well, I don't know about ya'll, but I think we should address the elephant, err, tank in the room before anything."
332. >Steady is quick to back you up
333. >>"Hear hear. I'm sure we're all eager to hop inside."
334. >a new voice speaks from behind you
335. >>>"I'm sure you all are."
336. >you all turn towards the door
337. >a mare with a black mane is standing there
338. >she's wearing one of those fancy scientist coats
339. >>>"Please forgive me if I interrupted anything, but I'm sure you've all noticed that your tank is different from all the others."
340. >Bright is quick to reply
341. >"Indeed, it is."
342. >the scientist continues
343. >>>"I'm Rubellite Riveter, I'm with the R&D department. I work on tanks."
344.
345. >you are Rubellite Riveter
346. >it looks like you got to the garage right after the crew did
347. >anyway, you decide not to waste any time in making clear why you're there
348. "I am here to brief you on this vehicle."
349. >the orange mare walks up to you
350. >you're guessing she's the commander
351. >"What is there to brief us on, Ms. Riveter?"
352. >you smile at the mare
353. "All kinds of things! Follow me."
354. >you walk passed the mare and up to the tank
355. >you climb on it and seat yourself on the turret
356. "This is a new design which we call the 'Luchs'. It is a fast reconnaissance / exploitation vehicle. It's main purpose is to either scout in close proximity to the enemy, or quickly take advantage of a gap in the enemy line using it's lightning speed."
357. >you pat the metal roof of the turret
358. "That's the bare bones description of it."
359. >you look back down at the group
360. "But there's so much more to tell you."
361. >you scooch over to the front of the turret and tap your hoof against the barrel of the gun
362. "This is a brand new weapon, it's a two-centimeter autocannon, meaning that it fires shells in a manner similar to our machine guns."
363. >you continue
364. "I won't bore you with every detail, of course."
365. >you stand and walk to the back of the tank, where you stand above the engine
366. "This vehicle is equipped with a brand new, high power engine which will allow this little devil to zip around at 60 km/h with ease."
367. >you hop down from the tank and turn your attention to the roadwheels
368. "The suspension system on this puppy is the most advanced in the Reich, such is needed seeing how fast this thing goes."
369. >you turn back towards the crew
370. "Now, the interior is unfortunately a little more cramped than a normal tank, but you'll all still fit comfortably."
371. >you try to think of other things to say
372. >but you're pretty sure you've covered all the basics
373. "Alright! That's all! Everything else you should have already learned at the academy."
374. >you walk back over to the door
375. "Have fun!"
376. >with that, you leave them
377.
378. >you are Bright Sky
379. >after that Riveter mare left, you and your crew made yourselves familiar with the garage
380. >the first floor is all dedicated to the garage, of course
381. >the second floor, however, is completely different
382. >your living quarters are on the second floor, consisting of four bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and a lounge
383. >you were impressed, to say the least
384. >back at the academy, you had to share a bunk-bed, and eat in a cafeteria
385. >it's a shame you're only going to be here for however long training takes
386. >at the moment, Sugar Bee and Steady Wheel are familiarizing themselves with the tank
387. >when they're done, you and Archer will go down and do the same
388. >for the moment however, you are both relaxing on a large sofa in the lounge
389. >"So Bright, what's your story?"
390. >you open your eyes and look over at the mare
391. "There's not much to tell, really."
392. >you look up at the ceiling and try to think of things to say
393. "I was born and raised in Canterlot, daughter to two of the most prominent weather ponies there."
394. >your wings flex instinctively as you think about your parents
395. >your parents... how long has it been since you've heard from them?
396. >when you heard that the Guard was beginning to round up Manos supporters, you sent them a letter telling them to leave the city
397. >they never responded...
398. >"Oooh, cool! Are they still prominent weather ponies?"
399. >you flinch slightly
400. >you don't even think about what you say next
401. "I hope so."
402.
403. >you are Sugar Bee
404. >you and Steady are familiarizing yourselves with the tank
405. >and you must say: it's a lot simpler than you imagined it would be
406. >first and foremost, the new engine is glorious
407. >you can't speak for it's performance, of course, but it's engineering is beautiful
408. >simple, easy to find parts have replaced many of the complex ones found on the older engines
409. >heck, someone with half your training could take care of the upkeep of this machine
410. >speaking of machine
411. >the tank itself is marvelously designed
412. >sure, there's less armor than the other tanks, but your speed should be your biggest defense
413. >unfortunately, it is pretty cramped in here, moving around will be difficult
414. >on the flip side, you have enough room to do your job once you're in your position
415. >speaking of positions
416. >your main position as mechanic means you're sitting near the engine most of the time
417. >however, you won't have any difficulty switching to your loader role, as the turret is right in front of you
418. >what's even better is that despite there being a gunner, loader, and commander, there should only ever be two ponies at the turret at any given time, saving space
419. >when you're not engaging an enemy, Bright can poke her head through the cupola to keep an eye out while Archer stays at his post
420. >and when you ARE engaging, and you need to be the loader, Bright can sit next to Steady and use a nifty little periscope to see what's outside
421. >overall, it's a very effective design in terms of crew usage
422. >Steady seems to agree
423. >"This is amazing! It has a WHEEL!"
424. >you chuckle and look at him
425. >he's sitting in the driver's seat, turning the mechanism side to side
426. "If this thing is as fast as that mare said, it must be needed to maintain control."
427. >gosh, you can't wait to hear this engine purr
428.
429. >you are Steady Wheel
430. >this thing IS amazing!
431. >aside from the wheel, the tank also has more gears than the other tanks
432. >definitely for the higher speeds
433. >plus, your seat feels like it has springs underneath it
434. >you're guessing this is meant to act like a shock system for when you hit bumps at high speed
435. >when you feel you've thoroughly inspected your quarter of the tank, you call back to Sugar
436. "Alright, I'm ready to head upstairs whenever you are."
437. >Sugar responds
438. >"I'm all set too."
439. >you wait for her to climb out the top of the turret before you do the same
440. "Well, that sure was fu-"
441. >you stop when you see that you and Sugar aren't alone
442. >a stallion wearing an officer's uniform is standing on the floor, as if waiting for you to come out
443. >the collar tabs show that he is a captain
444. >you and Sugar salute him once you climb down from the machine
445. >he waves his hoof at you
446. >>"Oh, no need for that. The name's White Chalk, I'm here to talk with your group for a bit."
447. >White Chalk
448. >ok good, at first you thought his cutie mark was supposed to be just a white line
449. >Sugar speaks up before you can
450. >"Well sure thing captain! Just follow us, everyone else is upstairs."
451. >you and she lead the captain over to and up the stairs."
452. "Heads up you two; we've got a visitor."
453. >you walk into the lounge, where you find Bright and Archer, seemingly waiting for you
454. >you take a seat in one of the open chairs
455. >Sugar and the captain follow suit
456. >>>"Sorry to disturb you on your first day, but there are a few things you should know about training."
457.
458. >you are White Chalk
459. >you don't really know how to put this lightly, soooo.....
460. "You won't be training with everyone else."
461. >the orange mare who you guess is the commander is fast to respond
462. >"What do you mean 'won't be training with everyone else'?
463. >you hold your hooves up
464. "What I mean is that you're tank is meant to serve an entirely new role. We don't have any material with which to train you."
465. >you continue
466. "You already know the basics of driving the thing, but it's up to you to come up with new tactics for such a vehicle."
467. >the blue stallion leans forward in his chair
468. >>"Well, any tactics we make will have to be centered around the tank's speed."
469. >you nod
470. "Exactly; you need to keep thinking of this kind of stuff and test it out for yourselves."
471. >you lean back
472. "And once you feel that you've discovered a working set of tactics, you will send us your results so that we can start training ponies with what you've discovered."
473. >when you get no further questions, you stand from your chair and place your cap upon your head
474. "Alright, I believe that you all know what is expected of you. You will have full access to all of our training fields and the grounds surrounding the Reich."
475. >you decide to elaborate upon that last part
476. "The fact that your tank is intended to cover large amounts of ground means that you'll probably need more room to train than our fields offer."
477. >you begin to walk back to the stairs leading down to the garage
478. "If you have any questions... just contact R&D I guess."
479. >with that, you leave the ponies to discuss what you've just told them
480.
481. >you are Golden Archer
482. >and today is the first day of training with the tank
483. >after that White Chalk pony told you what the deal was, you all decided to just relax for the rest of the night
484. >of course, you and Bright went down to the garage for an hour or so to check out the tank
485. >and you have to say...
486. >you LOVE your station as gunner
487. >the turret is decently sized, yet it has a small gun
488. >leaving you with plenty of space to be comfortable
489. >well, there is one thing that bothers you
490. >of course, Bright stands behind you when she is looking out of the cupola
491. >when she was testing out her station within the turret, you couldn't help but notice that every time you turned your head, you were greeted by Bright's crotch
492. >you can imagine that if you were one of THOSE ponies, you wouldn't have minded so much
493. >but you have a significant other serving as a footpony in the Black Hands
494. >he's currently in Vanhoover, with Lord Manos
495. >you'll have to remember to write him at some point today if you get the chance
496. >but that's not important right now
497. >what's important is that you're all climbing into the tank together
498. >as you get comfortable at your station, Bright climbs down through the cupola and takes her place behind you
499. >you lean forward and peer through your sights
500. >the garage door had already been opened, so what you see is the training field opposite what you like to call Garage Avenue
501. >the field is occupied by dozens of tanks doing maneuvers and moving together like a herd of metal beasts
502. >Bright seems to have noticed this as well
503. >"Alright, it looks like we're going outside the city for our first day."
504. >she looks back at Sugar
505. >"Start it up, Miss Bee."
506. >Sugar seems annoyed by how she was addressed, but does as requested
507. >with the flick of a switch, the engine roars to life
508. >the tank begins to vibrate slightly
509. >kind of like a massage chair
510. "Ooohh yeah, this is gonna be good."
511. >Bright looks forward to Steady
512. >"Take us out."
513.
514. >you are Bright Sky
515. >as the engine of your tank drones behind you, you take in a deep breath before giving the order
516. "Take us out."
517. >as you lift yourself up and stick you head through the cupola, you can hear Steady call back to you
518. >"Jawohl, Kommandant!"
519. >you hear him put the tank into gear
520. >then the tank lurches as you begin to move
521. >backwards...
522. >WHAT?
523. >you turn your head to look behind you
524. >indeed, the back wall of the garage is getting closer to you, rather than farther away
525. "STEADY YOU IDIOT, WE'RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!"
526. >but it's too little too late
527. >BAM
528. >the back of the tank slams into the wall before stopping
529. >the impact caused your head to fly back, bashing against the side of the cupola in the process
530. "OW! Son of a-"
531. >"Sorry! Uhhhhh, let's try this!"
532. >you look down into the cramped space within the tank
533. "No you fool, take your ti-"
534. >before you could finish, the tank lurches forward at a speed you are NOT comfortable with
535. >you stick your head back out of the tank
536. >the walls of the garage are gone
537. >you look back to find that you've already sped away from the building
538. >and are now about to crash you way onto the training field opposite your garage
539. >for the love of Manos...
540. "LEFT, LEFT!"
541.
542. >you are Steady Wheel
543. >and holy crap, you have no idea what is happening
544. >one second, you're slamming into a wall
545. >the next, you're about to crash out onto the training field where all the other tanks are doing maneuvers
546. >Bright is yelling orders to you, but you barely register her voice as you try to focus on your driving
547. >"LEFT, LEFT!"
548. >you crank the wheel as hard as you can while at the same time slamming on the brakes
549. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H91Z5yAiUA [Embed]
550. >you clench your eyes shut and hope for the best
551. "AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!"
552. >you can feel that you're drifting across the dirt road
553. >and then....
554. >it stops
555. >you pop one eye open and look out of your vision port
556. >you've stopped
557. "Oh thank Manos.."
558. >Bright yells down at you
559. >"Try it again, but SLOW this time."
560. >you roll your eyes
561. >that mare needs to learn to be a little nicer
562. >you look out of your vision port once more
563. >before you is the road which will take you to the city square
564. >from there, all you need to do is drive up to the front gates and boom, you're out of the city
565. >you slowly ease your hoof onto the gas pedal
566. >slowly but surely, the tank begins to rumble forward
567. "Alright, now we've got it."
568.
569. >you are Bright Sky
570. >and everything has gone smoothly ever since the initial panic
571. >your tank is currently cruising down the main street of the city
572. >you can imagine that it's an odd sight to behold for the average citizen of the Reich
573. >a tank just driving passed the everyday businesses and workers
574. >you've certainly had a lot of ponies stop what they were doing to watch you drive by
575. >some of the younger ones, the foals in particular, wave up at you
576. >you simply smile and wave back
577. >when you return your gaze forward, you see that you are quickly approaching the front gates of the Reich
578. >ever since this city was liberated by Lord Manos, actual gates were built at the entrance to the city, similar to the ones in Canterlot
579. >as you get very close to the massive doors, Steady stops the tank
580. >you look up at the towers flanking the doors, where the watchponies are eyeing you
581. >you yell up to them
582. "Good morning! Would you mind letting us through?"
583. >one of the ponies yells back down to you
584. >"Why do you need to leave the city?"
585. "We're taking this thing on a trial run outside the city walls."
586. >the pony begins talking with her colleague
587. >you can't make out what they're saying over the noise of your engine
588. >finally, the pony pulls the large lever in her tower
589. >slowly, the giant gates open outwards
590. "Thank you!"
591. >with that, Bright resumes driving forward, and out of the city
592.
593. >you are Sugar Bee
594. >you haven't had much to do so far
595. >the engine in this new tank runs smooth as butter
596. >no mechanical issues whatsoever thus far
597. >"OOH SWEET!"
598. >you turn to look at Archer
599. >he's holding a metal box
600. >"They gave us live ammo!"
601. >oh boy
602.
603. >you are Golden Archer
604. >you feel like bouncing in place
605. >you can't believe that you're going to have a chance to fire this cool looking gun already
606. >"Calm down Archer, we're going to test our speed before anything else."
607. >gosh, why does Bright have to be such a party pooper?
608. "Oooh alright."
609.
610. >you are Steady Wheel
611. >and you're getting the hang of this really fast
612. >the Luchs actually handles very well
613. >the steering wheel is actually very comfortable to drive with
614. >of course, you're still going slow
615. >"Alright Steady, let's speed it up a bit."
616. >finally, Bright says something you agree with
617. >you lick your lips as you change gears and apply more pressure to the gas pedal
618. >the pitch of the engine increases rapidly as your speed jumps up drastically
619. >the increase in speed pushes you back into your chair
620. "Heeeeere we go!"
621.
622. >you are Golden Archer
623. >well, Bright said that you can't test the gun...
624. >but that doesn't mean you can't try out the turret rotation!
625. >the mechanism is about as obvious as it can be: a big red crank wheel
626. >fortunately for you, Bright is moving down to sit next to Steady
627. >meaning that you can do this without being yelled at
628. "Alright, let's give it a whirl."
629. >you begin you turn the wheel
630. >you feel the small platform your seat is on begin to spin in place smoothly
631. >you take a quick look through your sights
632. >surely enough, you're now looking to the side of the tank, rather than straight ahead
633. "Coooool."
634. >"Having fun up there, Gold?"
635. >Sugar Bee is sitting next to her engine, looking bored
636. "Don't have much to do at your post?"
637. >Sugar shakes her head
638. >"They make the darn things too good now! Before too long, they won't even need engineponies anymore."
639. >you look at the gun in your turret before looking back at her
640. "Weeell, you're also our loader..."
641. >you pat the small seat next to yours
642. >she smiles before climbing up onto the small platform and taking a seat
643. "Alright; so, in order to turn the turret, you just have to turn this.."
644.
645. >you are Bright Sky
646. >you are inspecting the periscope located next to Steady
647. >apparently, when you are under attack, you are to use this instead of the cupola
648. >personally, you can't imagine that scenario ever becoming a reality
649. >by now, you are certain that the reputation garnered by The Reich's panzerwaffen would send any royalist running at the mere appearance of one
650. >you read the results of their use in at Ponyville and Vanhoover
651. >not a single one has yet to be lost in battle, yet alone successfully attacked
652. >you suddenly feel a tap on your shoulder
653. >you pull your face away from the periscope and look over at Steady
654. >on his face is a smile which you can only describe as goofy
655. >his forelegs are crossed behind his head as he leans back in his chair
656. >it is only now that you notice that he's using his hind legs to control the steering wheel
657. >"Pretty cool, huh?"
658. >you don't pay his words any mind
659. >you instead quickly lean over and grab hold of the wheel
660. "Steady! Are you a madpony? We're not out here to have fun!"
661. >the stallion huffs before dropping his legs back to the floor and leaning forward, swatting your hooves away as he resumes his normal driving position
662. >"You know Bright, YOU could learn to have a little fun. I mean, take a look,"
663. >he gestures to the open vision port in front of you
664. >"We're in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by vast open grounds."
665. >he suddenly smirks
666. >"Besides, don't think of it as 'having fun'. Think of it as.... testing the tank's versatility."
667. >you cock a brow at the stallion
668. >"What? I mean, what if we're in a situation where I am unable to use my forehooves?"
669. >you roll your eyes
670. "Whatever."
671. >as you return your gaze forward, you spot something through your vision port
672. >a lone tree
673. >you take a moment to look back at Archer before turning your attention to Steady once more
674. "Stop the tank, we have another test to do."
675.
676. >you are Golden Archer
677. >suddenly, you are thrown off balance as the tank suddenly brakes and stops
678. "Woah, be careful Steady, I almost fell!"
679. >Bright turns and looks back at you
680. >"Oh, I think you'll forgive him."
681. >she then smiles at you
682. >"Ready your weapon, Archer."
683. >you eyes widen, and you throw your hoof up to your forehead in a salute
684. "Yes ma'am!"
685. >you excitedly reach down to the floor and flip open one of the many metal boxes there
686. >inside are several very large ammunition clips
687. "Cooooool!"
688. >you grab one of the clips and snap it into place before giving the bolt a strong yank
689. >it makes that 'cha-ching' sound that you've learned to love from your basic training with machine guns
690. "Oohhhhhohohohohoh..."
691.
692. >you are Steady Wheel
693. >you are trying desperately not to burst out laughing as you and Bright watch Archer work with her new toys
694. >you lean over and whisper into Bright's ear
695. "And I'M having too much fun?"
696. >Bright opts to ignore you, and begins speaking once more to Archer
697. >"Your target is that lone tree in front of us, about 75 meters out."
698. >Archer is grinning like a madpony
699. >>"You got it."
700.
701. >you are Golden Archer
702. >oooh, you are so excited!
703. >you peer through your sights
704. >sure enough, there's a tree in front of your tank
705. >you bite your lip and grab hold of gun's grip, and adjust it to aim at the tree
706. "Ready to fire!"
707. >you hear Bright's reply
708. >"You may fire when ready."
709. >psh, as if she had to say...
710. >you wrap your hoof around the trigger
711. "Here goes nothing!"
712. >you pull back on the mechanism
713. >nothing...
714.
715. >you are Bright Sky
716. >you can tell something's wrong when Archer's goofy grin vanishes
717. >"Huh?"
718. >she pulls her face from her sights and looks down at her weapon
719. >you shake your head dismally
720. "Great..."
721. >Archer is inspecting her weapon with a now frustrated look on her face
722. >"This can't be happening! Not on our first r-.. Nevermind!"
723. >she looks over at you with a sheepish smile
724. >"Safety was on."
725. >oh for the love of...
726. >you gesture towards the tree before addressing Archer
727. "Archer, if you don't mind; we don't have all day here."
728. >the mare tilts her head
729. >"Don't we?"
730. >you can feel your face flush slightly
731. >she's questioning you!
732. "As a matter of fact,"
733. >damn, she has a point; you're not in any kind of rush
734. "Just shoot the tree..."
735. >you huff and turn away from the gunner, who chuckles as she once more focuses on her target
736.
737. >you are still Bright Sky
738. >before Archer can pull the trigger, you suddenly turn and call out to her
739. "Wait!"
740. >the mare pulls her face away from the sights, clearly annoyed at the delay you've created
741. "Before you fire, we're going to dismount so we can observe your firing better."
742. >she seems content with your reason for the pause, and makes room for Sugar to squeeze passed her
743. >next to you, Steady opens the hatch in front of him and unhooks himself from his seat before pushing himself out of the tank
744. >you allow Sugar to move to the front of the tank and get herself out before you turn back to Archer
745. "when you hear me give the order, you unload on that tree."
746. >the mare gives you an 'of course' kind of smirk and nods
747. >you turn and crawl through the hatchway, the cold of the Frozen North greeting you
748. >the combined body heat of your crew kept the tank sufficiently warm, but you just know it's going to be hot once you eventually drive in anything other than freezing conditions
749. >as you stand on the front of your metal steed, you survey your surroundings
750. >nothingness
751. >a pure and simple lack of substance which is rare to find, but not here
752. >in fact, the only thing breaking the flatness of the barren tundra is the tree which has miraculously managed to grow in such conditions
753. >it's a shame that you're about to deny it's hard-earned existence in this wasteland
754. >but the progress of the Reich is greater than any tree in all of Equestria
755.
756. >you are STILL Bright Sky
757. >as you satisfy yourself with your surveillance of the grounds about you, you snap your head to the two ponies standing to your left
758. >Steady seems ready to collapse in on himself against the harsh cold of the North
759. >he's clearly still accustomed to the warmer conditions of Vanhoover
760. >Sugar, however, seems unfazed by the nipping cold
761. >you can imagine that she's worked in much worse conditions
762. >with an 'umph', you jump down from the tank and join them
763. >the snow beneath your hooves crunches loudly as you turn and face the tree
764. >you lean your head to the left, towards Sugar
765. "What are you expecting, Sugar?"
766. >the Apple mare shrugs
767. >"If there's anything that living on a farm teaches you, it's to never expect anything to go right."
768. >you sneer a bit at her apparent lack of confidence
769. "Well I for one have high hopes."
770. >you steel a look of confidence on your face as you shout out to Archer
771. "You may fire when ready, Archer!"
772. >you hear Steady and Sugar stop breathing to your left
773. >and for a few moments, the only noise in the world is the howling of the uncontested wind against the bodies which intrude within it's domicile
774. >BOOM
775. >CRACK
776. >a sudden flash forces you to squint your eyes, but you can still see what happened
777. >half of the tree has just vanished in an explosion of wooden chunks and chips
778. >BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM
779. >it's hard to describe the carnage
780. >the sounds and sight of this tree's death
781. >the cracking, the shredding, the tearing
782. >in a matter of mere seconds, this once mighty tree groans in submission before falling onto its side with a mighty crash
783.
784. >you are Steady Wheel
785. >as the tank opens fire on the tree, you can't help but throw your hooves over your ears
786. >such a loud weapon..
787. >before your very eyes, the tree vanishes momentarily in a cloud of splinters
788. >you shield your eyes as a few of the wooden chips bounce harmlessly off of your fur
789. >when you once more look at the tree, it is in a sad state
790. >it looks as though several dozen beavers have taken to it
791. >the trunk has been reduced to a mere few inches in width, the rest of its mass being scattered about it
792. >as the rumbling of the weapon slowly dissipates across the frozen terrain, you finally allow the awe of the situation to set in
793. >with a low groan, what remains of the tree's trunk snaps and collapses in on itself, the rest of the tree falling to the ground with a loud thud
794. >an impressive first test, no doubt
795. "Oh wow."
796. >you really couldn't think of anything better to say
797.
798. >you are Sugar Bee
799. >as the tree collapses to the ground, you frown
800. >this is too much
801. >you can't even begin to imagine what such a weapon would do to a living creature
802. >but you are impressed nontheless
803. >apparently so is Steady
804. >"Oh wow."
805. >next to you, you can hear the pride in Bright's voice as she speaks
806. >>"'Oh wow' indeed. It works!"
807. >you decide that now is the time to voice your concerns
808. "Yeah, a little too well I think."
809.
810. >you are Bright Sky
811. >you have just now begun to celebrate the successful test of the cannon, and already you have a neigh-sayer
812. >"Yeah, a little too well I think."
813. >you snap your head towards Sugar
814. >perhaps she's just saying that it's a powerful weapon?
815. "Heh, yeah, it is a strong gun; but that what Lord Manos needs."
816. >the mechanic shakes her head
817. >"No. This is wrong. Something like this should never be used on living creatures."
818. >you now turn your entire body to face the mare
819. >to be honest, you're beginning to feel a little frustrated with the Apple
820. "Why in the name of Manos would you join an experimental tank program if you weren't prepared for this kind of work?"
821. >before Sugar can answer, Steady adds,
822. >>"Besides, it's not like this weapon is going to be used on ponies who deserve to live."
823. >okay, that might be a tad harsh, but you decide to say nothing
824. >Sugar turns her head towards Steady
825. >"How could you say something like that? Manos wants to make life better for ALL ponies, not just his followers."
826. >oh dear
827. >Steady snorts
828. >>"And how are we to make this better life while the Princesses and their brain-dead followers still fight against us?"
829. >oh no, you've made a split in your crew...
830. >you must stop this
831. "Guys, guys, you need to stop arguing right now."
832. >the two ponies look at you, clearly frustrated with each other and with you
833. "We are a team, and we have better things to do than bicker over such unimportant things."
834.
835. >you are Golden Archer
836. >for the last minute or so, you've just been sitting within your turret, in awe
837. >it was incredible, the destruction you had brought upon that poor tree
838. >you take a few moments to recall the feeling of firing the cannon
839. >the noise was loud, but not deafening, you imagine that you'd still be able to hear a pony next to you if they were yelling
840. >at first, you fired only one shot
841. >you allowed the ring from that one shot to fill the tank before you unloaded the rest of the clip on full automatic
842. >it was at that point you lost sight of the tree among the cloud of it's own splinters
843. >you exhale the breath you didn't realize you were holding as your mind returns to the present
844. >you look above yourself and stand, extending your hooves towards the latch for the cupola roof
845. >as you unlatch the hatch and push up, you can hear Bright outside
846. >it sounds like she's yelling, but for what reason?
847. >"And we have better things to do than bicker over such unimportant things."
848. >oh, they're arguing about something
849. >as you pull yourself out from the tank, you mumble to yourself
850. "Well, then they won't mind my interrupting. Like she said, we have better things to do."
851. >you jump down from the metal beast and make your way over to the group
852. >the three stop whatever conversation they were having as you approach
853. >welp, might as well say something
854. "Woah! That was some test, right?"
855. >Bright's face remains neutral, while Steady grins and Sugar scowls
856. >the stallion is first to respond
857. >>"Heck yeah that was 'some test'! Good shooting Archer."
858. >you feel your face redden slightly at the driver's compliment
859. >you absent-mindedly kick the snow beneath your hooves lightly
860. "Ohh, well it's kind of hard to miss a stationary target.."
861.
862. >you are Steady Wheel
863. >you scoff at Archer's humbleness
864. "Nonsense! You've never fired this thing before, and you landed every shot. That's worthy of praise in my book."
865. >it is only now that you notice the light tint of red on her face
866. >huh, she must be flushed from the sudden cold of exiting the tank
867. >suddenly, Bright begins to walk back towards the vehicle
868. >"Look, you two might be fine chatting it up out here, but I believe that we have places to be."
869. >you raise your brow slightly as you begin to follow the mare
870. "Are you sure about that, Bright?"
871. >without stopping, your commander turns her head to look back at you
872. "I mean, we've pretty much been given a blank check in terms of our time table for training with this thing."
873. >she opens her mouth, surely getting ready to counter your claims
874. >but you continue before she can speak
875. "AND, the way that I see it, and I'm sure I'm not alone here, is that we can go anywhere, and do whatever we want, at any time, as long as we're learning how to operate this vehicle."
876. >the command pony stops and turns to face you
877. >"I think you're forgetting your place, Steady. Don't forget that I'm in charge here."
878. >to your surprise, you hear Sugar speak up from behind you
879. >>"I'm with Steady on this. That officer told us that we're not training with the other tankists; so why would we adhere to their schedule? We can make our own schedule."
880. >and now Archer joins in
881. >>>"Yeah, I agree. Besides, we can find more stuff to blow up if we keep exploring like we have today."
882.
883. >you are Bright Sky
884. >this is not good
885. >your crew is actively teaming up against you to overrule a decision you've made
886. >this can't be happening, you're in charge here
887. >and you need to reestablish control over your crew
888. "I don't like the way you guys are talking; it sounds almost like mutiny to me."
889. >Sugar rolls her eyes at you
890. >the nerve...
891. >"It ain't mutiny, we're just saying you need to lighten up."
892. >lighten up?
893. >LIGHTEN UP?
894. >does this silly farmpony not understand the responsibility that she has?
895. >the responsibility that YOU have?
896. >you take a deep breath as you contemplate your options
897. >you could outright refuse their demands
898. >but that would create dissent
899. >and as you learned in your classes, dissent is the one thing you don't want between a crew and a commander
900. >your only other option is to go along with their demands
901. >you scowl at the thought
902. >you grew up in the capital of Equestria, Canterlot
903. >you grew up among important families of ponies and the nobility
904. >granted, their loyalty to the Princesses was and still is foolish,
905. >but you learned much from the environment
906. >things that the kinds of ponies that make up your crew could never learn, given where they come from
907. >and now, you're going to have to bend to their will...
908. "Fine. Steady, where are we going?"
909.
910. >you are Steady Wheel
911. >while you did have a few ideas on other places to go, you ultimately decided that your team wasn't going to be able to top the awesomeness that was the test fire
912. >as such, you put forward the proposal that you wrap up for the day and head back to the Reich
913. >this caused a big stink with Bright
914. >"WHAT? But that's what I said we were doing earlier!"
915. >you had given the mare a half-smirk
916. "Ahh Bright, but it's not your decisions we question, it's your attitude."
917. >that didn't seem to lessen the anger apparent on her features, so you elaborated
918. "You can't expect ponies to do things 'just because'."
919. >"BUT I'M THE COMMANDER!"
920. >it was at this point that you scrunched your muzzle
921. "And this is a TEAM, not a monarchy. Do you think we are like the princesses?"
922. >the unicorn eyed you for a few moments silently before huffing and walking back to the tank
923. >but enough reminiscing, back to the present
924. >you are in your rightful spot: the driver's seat
925. >and you're demonstrating some mad skills behind the wheel
926. >every now and then, you crank the wheel in one direction or the other, drifting the vehicle slightly
927. >this brings forth cheering from Archer and laughter from Sugar
928. >but nothing from Bright
929. >at least at first
930. >after a few drifts, you swear that you can see the makings of a smile on her face as the rear of the vehicle swings to and fro
931. >well good, maybe she's starting to see that fun CAN be had while working
932. "You know Bright, I DO respect your decisions."
933. >the mare turns her head towards you
934. "It's just that... well, the way you've been addressing us..."
935. >she tilts her head, now clearly curious
936. "You seem to think that we're fools who need a strong hand for direction, that's how I'll put it."
937. >"What do you mean, Steady?"
938. "Well, the way you talk makes me think that you assume that you're the only one here who's qualified at their job."
939. >she purses her lips
940. >"That is NOT tr-"
941. "AND you seem to think that it's only your voice that matters. This is not the case, Bright. We've all the same qualifications in our fields as you do in yours."
942. >you gesture to the two ponies behind you
943. "Our team is like a machine, every piece must work together; and if just ONE fails, the whole thing fails."
944. >yeah, that about sums up your feelings
945. >you lean back in your chair as you keep on driving
946. >a few minutes pass before you hear Bright chuckle light next to you
947. >"You know, YOU should have taken the commander classes instead, with wisdom like that."
948. >you smile at the compliment
949. "Don't flatter me, you know for a fact that it takes a lot more than wisdom to command a tank, I could never manage it."
950. >alright, let's see how SHE handles compliments
951. >you look over at the mare
952. >she's observing your driving
953. >"And I could never be a driver. I mean, just watching how much coordination you need between your hind and forehooves is enough to tell me that."
954. >you laugh a bit as you become aware of just how in-sync your hoof movements are
955. "Yeah, I guess.."
956. >you look back at Archer, who's sitting with her head back, seemingly asleep
957. "How about it Archer, could you be a tank commander if you wanted?"
958. >the brightly colored mare jerks forward, a strand of drool dripping from her mouth as she does so
959. >>"Wha- huh?"
960. >you roll your eyes
961. "I asked if you could ever manage Bright's job."
962. >the gunner snorts
963. >>"Yeah, as if. That job is so BOOORING! Plus, I would have no clue what to do."
964. >content with her answer, you look back at Bright and raise your eyebrows
965. "See? The parts of our team are vital, yet not interchangeable, so we HAVE to work together."
