  1. Sendak awoke and readjusted his eye for the Terran Sun's light, about the dozenth time he'd done so since moving out to a cabin with Shiro. His surrender with Lotor was bitter, somewhat humiliating, and overall a touchy thing to ask about. Lotor wasn't even a true Galra, letting his Altean side influence him so much.
  2.
  3. And yet, he couldn't deny that the schemish leader had done a good job thus far. Working to restore the ancient secrets of Altean alchemy, promoting peace and goodwill between every planet, including Earth as one of the newest Universal Alliance members. He'd even changed several laws made by Zarkon, an uncontroversial opinion once it was discovered the late emperor and Haggar made several laws while severely tainted by anti-beings from a quintessence rift.
  4.
  5. So while stripped of all military roles and somehow honorably discharged despite his extreme defeat by the hands of Lotor, he knew the day he lost at the Kral Zera must have been fates hand guiding the Galra Empire to a better future. Which is why he let out an accepting sigh as he drank his coffee, something Shiro didn't really enjoy but it tasted very sweet to Sendak's tongue. And hardly any negative health affects either, in fact it tended to warm him up in a usually grumpy morning.
  6.
  7. "Hey sleepy..", the champion- No, Shiro said as he walked in wearing his briefs and a slightly ripped t-shirt.
  8.
  9. "Hmmm, I'm having more night terrors", he ate a strip of bacon, thick, and even that was small for his physique and appetite.
  10.
  11. "Zarkon again?"
  12.
  13. "Indeed. 'You've failed me for the last time' this, 'the empire is broken' that. As if I could care about that broken husk of a corpse anymore."
  14.
  15. Finding out Zarkon was essentially a madman instead of someone operating on a justified method made him realize how much better the empire was without that damned voltron obsessed fool. To think, the entire time he never cared about his people and only truly searched for a robotic lion. And after sacrificing many of his own just because his son had been conducting illegal quintessence research, well, illegal since Haggar wasn't overseeing it.
  16.
  17. Shiro had touched his shoulder again, and Sendak realized his scowl was showing. He smiled into his lover's touch, letting him scratch behind the ears. It felt good, not exactly as good as their pet cat had been enjoying such scratches but still good. That animal would bat it's little paws at Sendak's legs now and then, finally over the first few weeks of arching it's back at the sight of a very large alien with what Shiro called "bat-cat ears".
  18.
  19. "You remember what the therapist said?", Shiro asked with a kiss to the cheek.
  20.
  21. "Don't reflect on it too much, think positively. Talk to someone I trust..", Sendak gave a very gentle squeeze to Shiro's hand, knowing what strength he had against a human.
  22.
  23. "Glad you're spending retirement with me?", Shiro grabbed his hand to go to their specially made couch, a short hop up for Shiro but normal size for Sendak.
  24.
  25. Sendak purred and pulled Shiro against him, glad to have someone leaning for affection. The cabin wasn't the best one, nor the worst, and not even what Shiro would've originally wanted. But it suited them both after the war, quiet, peaceful with some nearby farmers that kept kindness out and understanding of privacy. Even showing them some Texan food, something that had recently given Sendak a slight shift in his stomach.
  26.
  27. There in his small but good enough home, with his non-galran but incredibly handsome partner sidling up to his not completely model but cute body, he felt peace.
  28.
  29. With a sigh he closed his eyes and began a nap.
