  128. <h1>Welcome to Arithmancy!</h1>
  129. <b>bold</b>. Hello and welcome to Arithmancy! This is an elective class, but if you signed up thinking that my class was something easy to fill up your course schedule, I'd advise you to not come back after today! Arithmancy is only for the witch and wizards who want to reach beyond the normal way of learning, who strive to be greater than great! It can be difficult, but it is fascinating! I'm sure Arithmancy is foreign to most of you so I will give you a little background<br><br>
  130.
  131. Arithmancy is a very precise way of predicting the future. It is a method of divination by numbers first used by the ancient Greeks. They assigned values to the letters in the names of combatants to foretell the outcome of battles. Later, in the ninth century BC, the Chaldeans in Arabia (where our modern number system also comes from) practiced a form of arithmancy that divided their alphabet into three parts, each part composed of seven letters which they attributed to the then known seven planets. Wizards still use a similar system today.
  132. Today, Wizards can use arithmancy to help predict trends in the future. Predicting the future can be used in conjunction with other forms of magic to increase your power or chances of success. For example, if you're going to make a love potion for someone you fancy, wouldn't it be helpful to know what day they're more likely to be in a receptive mood?
  133. <br><h2>Directions</h2>
  134. The most basic form of arithmancy is used with the names of people you want more information about. First, you must convert the name into a number. Each letter of the alphabet corresponds to a number, as shown in this chart:
  135.
  136. <center>
  137. <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="30%"><tr align="center"><td><b>1</b></td>
  138. <td><b>2</b></td>
  139. <td><b>3</b></td>
  140. <td><b>4</b></td>
  141. <td><b>5</b></td>
  142. <td><b>6</b></td>
  143. <td><b>7</b></td>
  144. <td><b>8</b></td>
  145. <td><b>9</b></td></tr><tr><td colspan="9" class="black"><img src="/images/1x1.gif" width="1" height="1"></td></tr><tr align="center"><td>A</td>
  146. <td>B</td>
  147. <td>C</td>
  148. <td>D</td>
  149. <td>E</td>
  150. <td>F</td>
  151. <td>G</td>
  152. <td>H</td>
  153. <td>I</td></tr><tr align="center"><td>J</td>
  154. <td>K</td>
  155. <td>L</td>
  156. <td>M</td>
  157. <td>N</td>
  158. <td>O</td>
  159. <td>P</td>
  160. <td>Q</td>
  161. <td>R</td></tr><tr align="center"><td>S</td>
  162. <td>T</td>
  163. <td>U</td>
  164. <td>V</td>
  165. <td>W</td>
  166. <td>X</td>
  167. <td>Y</td>
  168. <td>Z</td>
  169. <td> </td></tr></table></center><p>
  170. For example, the following numbers correspond to the letters in Hermione's name:</p><p>
  171. </p><center>
  172. <table border="0" cellspacing="1" cellpadding="0" width="35%"><tr align="center"><td>H</td>
  173. <td>E</td>
  174. <td>R</td>
  175. <td>M</td>
  176. <td>I</td>
  177. <td>O</td>
  178. <td>N</td>
  179. <td>E</td>
  180. <td> </td>
  181. <td>G</td>
  182. <td>R</td>
  183. <td>A</td>
  184. <td>N</td>
  185. <td>G</td>
  186. <td>E</td>
  187. <td>R</td></tr><tr><td colspan="16" class="black"><img src="/images/1x1.gif" width="1" height="1"></td></tr><tr align="center"><td>8</td>
  188. <td>5</td>
  189. <td>9</td>
  190. <td>4</td>
  191. <td>9</td>
  192. <td>6</td>
  193. <td>5</td>
  194. <td>5</td>
  195. <td> </td>
  196. <td>7</td>
  197. <td>9</td>
  198. <td>1</td>
  199. <td>5</td>
  200. <td>7</td>
  201. <td>5</td>
  202. <td>9</td></tr></table></center><p>
  203. Next, you "reduce" your number by adding your numbers together until all you are left with is one digit. To reduce the numbers in Hermione's name:</p><p>
  204.
  205. 8 + 5 + 9 + 4 + 9 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 7 + 9 + 1 + 5 + 7 + 5 + 9 = 94<br>
  206. 9 + 4 = 13<br>
  207. 1 + 3 = 4
  208. </p><p>When working with someone's name, you can calculate three different numbers for them. The first, called the "Character Number", can be used to find out the general personality type of the person, and is derived by using all the letters of the name, as we did above.
  209. </p><p>
  210. The second number you can calculate for someone is their "Heart Number". This represents the individual's inner life and can indicate desires and fears hidden from others. You calculate it as we did above, but using only the vowels contained in their name. Hermione's Heart Number is 4:<br>
  211.
  212. 5 + 9 + 6 + 5 + 1 + 5 = 31<br>
  213. 3 + 1 = 4<br>
  214. The final number you can calculate for someone is their "Social Number" and is calculated using only the consonants of the name. The Social Number represents the outer personality, the face an individual shows to the outside world. Hermione's Social Number is 9:<br>
  215.
  216. 8 + 9 + 4 + 5 + 7 + 9 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 63<br>
  217. 6 + 3 = 9<br></p><center>Once you figure out the numbers, they can tell you a lot of things!</center><p>
  218. Simply comparing people's Character Numbers can show you if they're compatible. For example, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley are both 2's, James and Sirius were both 7's, Molly and Arthur were both 5's, etc.</p><p>We can also see some amazing paralells to people we know when we look at the numbers using the Personality Numbers chart (located as a guide under the homework tab.) For example, Albus Dumbledore is a 1, and from the chart we can see that 1's are leaders. Gilderoy Lockhart is a 3, which the chart describes as unfocused and superficial. Severus Snape is a 2, and 2's are known to be of two minds, containing opposing forces, both good and evil. </p><p>Different numbers can also be compatible and fit together in many interesting ways. For example, Fred and George get along and work together better than any twins we've ever seen, as if they complete each other. Fred Weasley is a 6 and George Weasley is a 3. The number 6 represents harmony, as in two getting along, and 3 represents completeness, two becoming one. In addition, they both add up to 9, which signifies completion to its fullest degree. Although they're typical teenagers separately, together Fred and George are a formidable force.</p>
  219. If you read all the way, through, Congrats. The answer to question number 5 for your first lesson is tacos.<br>

  268. While it may look a bit complicated, the student table is very simple. Boiled down into not so technically terms: the (tr) (/tr) means ~*~ new row of cells ~*~. Each row has four cells. You can see them as Lesson One, Lesson Two, Lesson Three, and Lesson Four. Those cells are made with the (th) (/th). Which means it will go (tr)
  269. and then inside that FOUR (th) (/th) and then close the whole thing off with a (/tr). So after you get to the fourth lesson, add in a (tr) but with the brackets instead of the parenthesis. Then add one of these:<br><center><textarea><th><div style="color: #54567b; font-weight: bold;">Lesson One</div>
  270. <br>username<br>username<br>username<br>username<br>username<br></th></textarea><center><br>
  271. That is ONE (th) (/th). Add four of them and then close it out with a (/tr), and then change the lesson names.
  272. If you have eight cells and you only need six, that is okay, just leave them blank. You'll fill them eventually. c:<br>
  273. Finally, make sure that you didn't accidentally erase the (/table) that was already at the bottom of everything.
  274. And that's it. You can change the colors if you want.</center></center></div>
