  1. Setting
  2. Continent of Kasai-Tochi, named for its volcanic origin. Like feudal Japan, it is split into various smaller territories and city-states. The inhabitants for this land are both human and Yokai. There is also a magical spirit plane that exists separate from the land itself, called Yomi, where the more metaphysical Yokai gather such as spirits and demons, and it is also the seat of powerful Oni Lords.
  3.
  4. Some Important Territories
  5. • Higuchi – A land of cherry blossoms, the main city becomes a bright pink in spring. A land of open and fertile plains, it is wealthy and heavily guarded due its role as breadbasket. The ruler is a human, Tomino Higuchi. It is mostly a human populated area, but Yokai are allowed to move about. Several great Samurai hail from Higuchi
  6. • Shinrin – Misty forests rule this hilly nation, with the overgrowth in some places being as thick as concrete. Notable for its almost total Yokai population, the queen of this land is a mythic nine-tailed Kitsune named Masami. With her immense power bordering on godhood, it is said that the mists that obscure and protect the land from would-be invaders are created by her. The capital sits at the base of an immense waterfall, floating on lake Kiri.
  7. • Emomoto – The icy northern regions are home to this nation, covered by a thick blanket of snow almost year-round. Frigid gales and whipping blizzards are a daily occurrence for the hardy people of this land. Several different kinds of Yokai live alongside their human counterparts in peace and shared defense, including Hibagon and Yuki-Onna. Despite its harsh climate, the capital is a well-kept and magnificent city made possible by the gold dust collected from the Aosaginohi, a mythical bird native only to Emomoto. As a testament to the cooperation of human and Yokai, the king Matsuyoshi Emomoto took a Yuki-Onna for his wife, and queen Rei is renowned the world over for her beauty.
  8. • Yama – Its name meaning simply “mountain”, this nation is located deep within a towering mountain range. A hardy and muscular people, the natives of this land work hard every day to mine and smith various ores, some incredibly rare, and sell them to other nations. Working together with the strong armed Yokai of the region, several of the mountains have tunnels smashed clean through them. The capital rests in an extinct caldera surrounded by world famous hot springs. It’s chief, Kenta, is notable for being a red-skinned horned Oni who rules over humans. He and his wife, Akane, have eleven children together, each of them proud warriors and engineers in their own right.
  9. • Ryūgū-jō - Undersea kingdom populated entirely by yokai. Ruled by the dragon Ryujin, it is populated by a species of shark-man named Samebito. The palace of Ryujin, made from exquisite red and white coral, sits high over the capital undersea city. Those seeking an audience with Ryujin must make offerings at a temple on land. Only a privileged few land-dwellers have ever laid eyes on this undersea nation.
  10. • >Yōgan - In the crater of an active volcano, deep in the bowels of the earth, lies the domain of the fire dragon god, Kōdai. His immensely hot body ignites the immediate air around him, and he is constantly wreathed in a fierce blaze. His lair is surprisingly home to a massive temple made of volcanic rock that periodically floods with lava. The temple itself is staffed by elemental spirits, the only beings capable of surviving unassisted in the heart of Kōdai's lair. Due to the intense volcanic activity, the area is rich in diamonds, some growing into large spires of glittering beauty.

  12. Yomi
  13. The land of spirits, where souls of men go before being sent to their determined afterlife and where spiritual Yokai live. Existing on a parallel plane to the physical world, the terrain is a radical departure from the land of Kasai-Tochi. Wild, exotic plants coming in all shades of color grow with reckless abandon, oceans home to wandering leviathan spirits that float through the air just as they swim through the sea, and crystal caves that glitter with every look. Yomi is also home to the Oni Lords, powerful evil entities that seek the total dominion of the land against the gods and to invade the physical world. Each Oni Lord has their own territory that warps and twists to suit the mood of its ruler. Demonic and wicked Oni pour forth from these blighted lands
  14.
  15. Our heroes
  16. • The Kazegiri Clan – A clan of ninja whose headquarters lie in Higuchi. They serve the local lord as a preferred client, but accept missions from other interested parties. They will not accept a mission that puts Higuchi in danger however. Rather than being simple killers for hire, they too follow a code and refuse to kill innocent targets or participate in missions that actively put bystanders in harm’s way
  17. ◦ Hattori Kazegiri – The patriarch of the clan, he is a famed ninja who has completed hundreds of missions and participated in several pitched battles in defense of Higuchi. His signature weapon is a set of claws and boots with retractable blades. Unusually tall and muscular for a ninja, his stealth skills are beyond compare to compromise for this. Overbearing and honor-bound, he can appear gruff and unapproachable, but is a soft-hearted and kind man in the presence of his family.
  18. ◦ Michiko Kazegiri – The matriarch of the clan, she was once a famous kunoichi from the Yama nation. After a cataclysmic battle where she was saved by Hattori, she fell in love with him and they eventually married. Her marksmanship with a longbow and shuriken put some of the finest arches and ninjas to shame. Preferring a simple kunai to her husband’s fancier weapon, she is often the peace maker in clan affairs. Her soothing presence can calm her husband’s most fiery rage.
  19. ◦ Momo Kazegiri – Firstborn child to Hattori and Michiko, she has recently passed all her ninja training with exemplary marks and has begun to take on her own missions. Although a gifted Kunoichi, she is still only beginning to experience the full scope of her responsibilities. Momo values her honor over all other things, and will preserve it at any cost. She is annoyed by her cutesy name.
  20. ◦ Jigen Kazegiri – Momo’s younger brother. Still just a boy, he is often seen in the care of his mother while she gives him lessons to prepare him for his eventual life as clan ninja. A precocious little scamp, he enjoys pranks and generally exploring. He looks up to his older sister and wants to be just like her, but that doesn’t prevent him from giving his sister kancho.
