- Enigma - Amen - YouTube
- NalaniEke
- I am interested in discussing this song.
- Especially its symbolism.
- NalaniEke
- The topic intends to mock the post-truth propaganda of the Trump administration.
- Fair enough.
- Their cognitive efforts are abysmal.
- Also, the cognitive output of several of the operators in this room is not impressive.
- For at least one or two, we might say its deplorable.
- So, in the Christian tradition, in addition to justly criticizing the failings of Trump and everything he touches, look inward.
- Joey, for example, frequently loses his mind.
- It's ironic that your defense of Your Own Kind is quite analogous to Trump's assertions that his crowds are the largest.
- @fierygt
- why? just....why?
- NalaniEke
- You'll have to be more specific with your question.
- fierygt: are you interested the band Enigma?
- fierygt: speaking truth to power is a progressive value.
- That value doesn't end at the boundaries of this channel.
- I assumed that would be clear.
- @fierygt
- complaining about the ops in this channel, is not 'speaking truth to power'. its whining.
- NalaniEke
- How do you distinguish between whining and 'speaking truth to power'?
- Second, do you agree whining is a word that is correlated with human childhood?
- And that its usage is generally designed to associate the target with childhood, which is to be looked down upon, in an attempt to marginalize without argumentation?
- I just typed "speaking truth to power" into Google.
- @fierygt
- yeah. so stop doing it.

- NalaniEke
- “It is a powerful nonviolent challenge to injustice and unbridled totalitarian forces, often perpetuated by government, sometimes not,” says Judith Sherwin, Attorney at Law, Adjunct Professor, Loyola School of Law. “Sir Thomas More did it at the cost of his life when he spoke truth to power against King Henry VIII; Martin Luther King Jr. did it at the cost of his freedom when he ended up in the Birmingham jail and eventually at the cost of his life.”
- fierygt: You're not currently at my level of cognitive output.
- Ignoring fierygt!*@*
- NalaniEke
- As a result, I ignored you.
- Engaging you, in your current state, is a kind of anti-intellectualism, and would represent me not accepting who for you are at this moment.
- “Speaking truth to power means comforting the afflicted, and afflicting the comfortable. None of us has a monopoly on the truth. There is the truth, and there is the way to the truth. We must be humble enough to accept that we only know the truth that we know, at any given point on our life’s journey. But the truth that we do know, we must speak it. We must have the courage to say what we see.”
- Tavis Smiley, host and managing editor of Tavis Smiley on PBS, and author of My Journey With Maya.
- “Speaking truth to power means believing deeply in what you say and fighting every day to have that heard. It may not be popular; it means taking a risk, it means standing for something.”
- Shari Runner, Interim President & CEO, Chicago Urban League
- "it may not be popular", "it means taking a risk", "it means standing for something"

- @Sooner
- Senate Democrats have sent a letter to request another hearing for Betsy DeVos, Trump's education pick, before her confirmation vote
- ⓘ fierygt is now known as fieryUSA
- NalaniEke
- America is a failed political system.
- Why? Betsy DeVos was nominated to be education secretary by the PEOTUS.
- @fieryUSA
- it was the republicans who allowed a nutball to infiltrate them.
- NalaniEke
- That is part of the problem, but there are many factors.
- @Sooner
- and Merrick Garland was nominated to the SCOTUS by the POTUS, and the GOP senate refused to even meet with him, let alone HAVE a hearing
- NalaniEke
- I have written on the correct response to the Merrick Garland issue.
- "The Democrats should refuse to hold a hearing on any SCOTUS nominee except Merrick Garland. Then, the Republicans still owe as many days as elapsed from 2016 Mar 16 until the day the hearings begin on Merrick Garland. So, after Merrick Garland has his hearings, the next nominee from a Republican, whether that is under Trump, or in 2045, will have to wait the number of days elapsed between 2016 Mar 16 and the day of Garland's hearing. This is what fairness in this situation looks like. It may lead to a Constitutional Crisis or Constitutional Collapse. If it does, it means the Republicans' decision concerning Garland was Constitutional Crisis inducing."
- If a person's behavior is so atrocious that having it mirrored back to them leads to an unsolvable situation, then the original person created an unsolvable situation.
- +DonDraper
- nothings going to collapse due to a missing SCOTUS judge
- we'll just dwindle to 6
- @fieryUSA
- right. if republicans want to be such strict 'founding father' assholes....the supreme court didn't even have 9 judges until last century.
- @Sooner
- it's actually a pretty big deal
- NalaniEke
- I do not think it is necessary anything collapses, but it could.
- Because it means the Democrats never accept any nominee besides Merrick Garland.
- @Sooner
- since decisions cannot be made with even splits
- that's the entire point of having an odd number of justices
- NalaniEke
- Which means, unless Trump nominates Merrick Garland, we will never have any more SCOTUS justices.
- +DonDraper
- if you're anti-Federalist. a split court is your ideal
- NalaniEke
- And, over time, they die off or retire.
- +DonDraper
- plus, I've been saying this for a while: Why should Democrats and Republicans live in the same country?
- NalaniEke
- Even split decisions are legally binding for that case, but cannot be cited for precedent.
- +DonDraper
- Why should they have the same legal structure?
- NalaniEke
- So, not quite correct, Sooner.
- +DonDraper
- And how is that even ethically defensible?
- @Sooner
- split decisions default to the lower court ruling
- NalaniEke
- DonDraper: in the Diamond Age, distributed republics of cognitively similar people was hypothesized.
- @Sooner
- rendering the SCOTUS useless
- so I think it is a big deal
- NalaniEke
- It is a very big deal.
- +DonDraper
- Diamond Age sounds good
- NalaniEke
- DonDraper: the point is that I think democracies as we've been running them may be obsolete.
- I think uniform voting is unfair and broken in a system with such large disparities in education and intelligence.
- I don't want to live in a system where people with 80 IQs that believe in demons consider the correct climate change policy.
- I do not consent to that.

- NalaniEke
- There's an essay I wrote on why we should move away from uniform voting democracy.
- Specifically, extending the notion of separation between state and religion to separation between state and bad decision making.
- Whether that bad decision making be religious in nature or not.
- This isn't support of good decision making, as it isn't obvious what that is, but in many cases, bad decision making is clear.
- For example, all disagreements with CDC policy that cite no evidence is "bad decision making"
- And should violate the Constitution if it is used as a basis for changing CDC policy
- NalaniEke
- “The trick about speaking truth to power is to do it from your inner conviction of moral truth and not for a desire for approbation —- and not to be deterred by condemnation either - and to let your sense of the rightness of things overcome the fear of not speaking. While not all of us have the great causes of More and Dr. King we all have the obligation to speak truth to power in our lives to forces great and small - to defend the powerless, to stand for justice and to recognize the situations in which we are required to do so.”
- Judith Sherwin, Attorney at Law, Adjunct Professor, Loyola School of Law, Chicago
- I think that's a good quote for you, fieryUSA.
