- Set in the 1950's, Hogarth, a young boy from Maine, befriends a massive robot that crashed onto Earth, the Iron Giant. While developing a friendship with it, Kent Mansley, a government agent, will stop at nothing to destroy it, and will not change his mind. Because of the boy's attachment with the robot, he'll try to stall Kent's progress, such as using a different chocolate for Kent's sundae. He's also kept the robot at Dean's scrapyard, despite his reluctance to keep him there. But their mutual hatred of Kent's cruel intentions might just keep the friendship between them.
- What if a gun had a soul? A gigantic mobile weapon from another planet is sent to destroy Earth, but is damaged on arrival and loses its memory. It is soon befriended by a young boy, Hogarth, who is an outcast at school and relishes the chance to have a real friend. However, soon the paranoid government agent Kent Mansley arrives in town, determined to destroy the giant at all costs.
- Unlike the animated bombs that Warner Brothers has released over the last two years, the Iron Giant does not deserve to fail. Unfortunately, it seems that Warner Brothers thought that it would, and therefore didn't put any effort into promotion. I saw the film the day that it came out, and I was so taken with it that I had to have a memento of some kind. But there was nothing. No books, no toys, no posters. Except for an advertising campaign that seems to have peaked two weeks ago, publicity has been almost zilch.

All of this is a shame, because this is the best animated film I have seen in years. Brad Bird has crafted a fully realized world from the fifties, and set it in the animation style familiar to those times. There are shades of Lady and the Tramp in the large lines and fluid movement that the human characters exhibit. More telling than any technical aspect, though(including the amazing computer-generated giant), is the script. This is a beautiful one. Simple enough for children, but aimed at adults, the movie had everyone in the sparsely populated movie theatre laughing and cheering.

This movie should be seen by everyone it can. It's a shame that a story this wonderful can be ruined by a simple lack of promotion.
- ** You will almost certainly *never* be the same after watching this movie. However you may have felt when you began watching it will be altogether different when the film is over. It changes nearly all one's perspectives. ** And -- it simply makes one feel very, very good. ** This is, to put it bluntly, the sort of movie they simply DO NOT make enough of. Period.
- Still, the movie -- as beautifully drawn, as sleek and engaging as it is -- has the annoyance of incredible smugness.
- Yes, in a deleted story board scene hints that the Iron Giant isn't the only one of its kind. When the Giant starts to sleep, his "dream" is transmitted to Dean's TV which shows brief footage of other Iron Giants.

However in the "Signature Edition" released in 2015, it is implied that the Iron Giant is the last of his kind, his planet having been destroyed by the war for which he was presumably created. a5c7b9f00b
