  “F ck you, Kenny,” she mumbles, headed toward the door. But when she makes it to the threshold, she freezes. A barbed, black spine shoots out of her back, extending a full yard into the bridge. At first, it looks like Susan’s spine simply exploded from her torso, dripping with blood, and Ken struggles to process exactly what he’s seeing.

  The spine is black.

  Bones aren’t black.

  Why would her spine leave her body? What’s with the weird, hook thing at the end? It takes him a second to register that, whatever happened to Susan Spiteri, she is most definitely dead.
