- hi I'm dr. Robert Glover welcome to part
- one of a special two-part podcast series
- with ten game changers to help you take
- your job and love it
- at one time or another most of us have
- probably wanted to shout take this job
- and shove it even the best of jobs can
- get tedious demanding or repetitious
- worse many jobs are downright boring
- exhausting brain numbing even demeaning
- or physically dangerous whether you have
- a good job that's occasionally
- unsatisfying or a terrible job that you
- have to psych yourself up for or smoke a
- joint just to get out of bed in the
- morning you can take charge and turn
- your job into a place you actually enjoy
- showing up for ok let's be honest some
- jobs are better than others some jobs
- might be a great fit for someone else
- and pure torment for you some jobs
- really do suck I'm realistic some jobs
- are terrible and you can't change that
- but you can't change how you experience
- them if you're not in a position to turn
- in your two-week notice yet most people
- think they only have three options for
- the less than ideal job stick it out and
- be miserable hope something will change
- or leave but there is another option you
- can change you and show up in a
- different way it's your choice you can
- whine and complain about your job or you
- can change your attitude and change your
- behavior it is within your power to
- change your perspective of your place of
- employment and even change the job
- itself it's amazing how many situations
- can change dramatically
- even up to 180 degrees when a person
- decides to do something different in
- terms of how they show up for their job
- so no matter what kind of job you are
- presently in a career that you've
- trained and educated yourself for a
- part-time or temporary hourly job a good
- job that could be better or a sucky job
- that you hate
- I challenge you to change how you look
- at and show up for your job I challenge
- you to take the love your job challenge
- in this podcast series I'm going to
- share with you 10 game changers you can
- practice daily to turn your job into a
- job you love or at least one that you
- don't dread going to every day in this
- first part of this two-part series I'm
- going to present the first 5 game
- changers to help you turn your job into
- a job you love and then in part 2 we'll
- get to the second five so let the
- challenge begin
- all right here's game changer number one
- on your job a powerful way to change
- both your attitude and your behavior
- work is to own your job treat it like
- it's your business be an entrepreneur
- get all in bring your a-game every
- single day you go to work so would you
- slack off complain or mail it in if your
- job was your company so game changer
- number one is don't be passive be
- proactive now throughout this podcast
- series I'm going to talk about a concept
- that I called be de best damn employee
- and that's going to be you and we're
- going to talk about it in several over
- the different game changers we'll keep
- revisiting the concept of the bde or
- best damn employee and I have found that
- by you taking ownership of a job is one
- powerful way to be the best damn
- employee that you can be no when I get
- to the end of point one I'm gonna ask
- you to stop your mp3 player or whatever
- you're listening this podcast on and
- write down three things you can do this
- week to show all the way up at work to
- own your job now this can include things
- that you are going to stop doing it can
- include things you're going to start
- doing and it can include things you're
- going to do more of then as part of
- being a best damn employee and owning
- your job talk to your boss about your
- ideas to improve both
- your performance and the job itself do
- this with no attachment outcome right
- you're not gonna try to change your boss
- you're not really gonna try to change
- anything but you know you don't have to
- have your bosses buy-in to support you
- for you to take ownership of your job
- now if you get fired I'd rather you get
- fired for bringing your a-game than for
- going along to get along or just mail in
- in in every day so as part of owning
- your job and being a be de best damn
- employee ask your boss for challenges
- get out of your comfort zone make the
- job a challenge for yourself I recall
- one of my first real jobs was my first
- summer out of high school and I got a
- job as a substitute letter carrier at
- the post office and I scored really well
- on their placement test and both my
- mother and father had worked at the post
- office but I already knew it was not
- going to be a career it was just a way
- to that time to make pretty good money
- to pay for college now what my job
- basically was was filling in for letter
- carriers when they went on vacation that
- meant every time I took on a new letter
- carriers route I had to learn how to
- sort the mail out using the the cubicle
- and the cubbies that they used to order
- the mail for the route then had to you
- know pull everything down put everything
- in order go out put it in a mail truck
- and drive around try to find all the
- mailboxes delivering the mail and get
- back to work now typically for a few
- days on a new route that I'd never done
- before it would take me you know longer
- of course and the regular letter
- character but I always made every every
- opportunity to make it a challenge I
- made it a game I owned that route it
- became mine so I would show up and and
- do everything I could to challenge
- myself to make it interesting because if
- I didn't do that I get bored to tears
- and in fact one of the things that I
- found is a lot of the letter carriers
- you know would they would go do their
- job and then go sit in a cafeteria for
- two hours during the day and then show
- back up at the office at 3 o'clock like
- they've been working the whole time
- I tried that a time or two bored me to
- death
- so I would challenge myself I'd go do
- the job
- I'd get back in probably two hours
- before the normal letter carriers once I
- actually learned the route over a period
- of a week or two and then after a while
- the regular letter carriers told me hey
- slow it down you're making us look bad
- management's saying how come the
- substitutes getting in before you are
- but you know what I couldn't do it any
- other way
- it would have been too bored would have
- driven me crazy so I owned it I made it
- a challenge and and I took charge of how
- I did my job
- so make your job a challenge for
- yourself by owning it and getting all in
- and 0.1 of owning your job can do
- wonders to change your attitude and the
- job itself even if you do nothing else
- of these ten you taking ownership of
- your job can be a major game changer
- okay stop for a moment now turn your
- your player off and make that list of
- things you're going to do different this
- week to start owning your job
- GameChanger number two turn every oh no
- I have to into an oh boy I get to now
- this is one of my favorites every time
- you have a sense of dread resentment and
- frustration about anything at work find
- a way to turn it into an old boy I get
- to now I'm the boss of my company I
- haven't gotten a paycheck since 1988 and
- I love my job but there are some parts
- about my job I enjoy less than the other
- parts I might drag them a little bit or
- put a mom procrastinate and sometimes
- it's just kind of wake up in the morning
- going oh no I got a record a podcast
- today or oh I need to I have to do my
- insurance billing sir oh I've got three
- long-distance consultation sessions I
- have to do this afternoon and what I've
- learned to do is I take every situation
- that if I find my mind dreading it
- avoiding it feeling oh no I have to do
- it I turn it into an old boy I get to
- now it is simple but it changes my
- entire day and
- I usually end up enjoying the thing I
- was previously dreading or avoiding so
- for example if I have to do a podcast
- that day or need to get a podcast done
- I'll go oh boy I get to record a podcast
- I get to check that thing off my list it
- won't be hanging over me anymore and
- I'll get it sent out to the guys in my
- class and and they're all gonna love
- hearing this podcast so I turned it into
- an oh boy if it's insurance Billings
- instead of saying oh no I've got to do
- insurance Billings it's oh boy I get to
- do insurance Billings today
- and I'm gonna bring in several hundred
- more dollars for sending out those
- insurance Billings and it'll be one more
- thing checked off the list or if it's
- long distance consultation sessions I
- remind myself that I always really do
- enjoy them is something I really do love
- now the part that that I struggle
- against is I hate making commitments of
- my time I guess I'm a hunter-gatherer at
- heart and and I don't like being tied to
- a specific appointment time but I do
- part of my job requires it so I say oh
- boy
- I get to earn X hundred dollars today by
- working with these guys I'll think of
- each guy that I'm working with what I
- like about working with them and say oh
- boy I get to spend that time with them
- today and I get to make more money in
- three hours than most people in this
- world might make in a week alright so I
- turn it into an oh boy I get to as I
- said it's simple but it changes my
- entire attitude so as you do this as you
- turn your own nose I have to into oh boy
- I get to it helps you stop being a
- victim
- it changes your mindset because you're
- not a victim you're a volunteer whatever
- job you're at you are volunteering to be
- there and there might actually be slaves
- somewhere on this planet or people
- working for slave wages that have a
- better attitude than you do so this is
- about an attitude adjustment no one is
- forcing you to do this job no matter how
- terrible you believe your job might be
- or management is or your boss is
- entertain the idea that you are the
- problem not your job by changing you you
- can change your job at least your
- perspective of it
- and how you experience it so whatever
- way you're making yourself a victim
- that's your problem not the problem of
- your job so I'm going to encourage you
- as you turn every oh no I have to into
- oh boy I get to is stop complaining
- complaining is a bad habit it
- perpetuates a feeling of helplessness
- and it can turn any situation toxic so
- use your job as a way to practice
- challenging your negative thinking use
- your job as a way to practice taking
- responsibility for every situation you
- find yourself in life this week stop
- complaining stop listening to other
- people complain stop gathering and
- replaying evidence of how sucky your job
- your co-worker your boss is vow to go
- one week without entertaining complaints
- in your head or speaking them out loud
- so this week turn every oh no I have to
- into an oh boy I get to game-changer
- number three don't cheat your employer
- or yourself now back to the concept of
- best damn employee no more Facebook no
- more YouTube no more Twitter no more
- porn
- no more yakking on the phone no more
- just dinking around at work give your
- boss and honest day's work I've worked
- with plenty of guys who've told me that
- they get so bored on their jobs and I
- ask them well what do you do at work and
- basically they'll tell me well they
- spend time surfing on YouTube or
- Facebook or texting and yes even surfing
- for porn I tell them go one week and cut
- the crap
- don't cheat their boss in any way while
- at work be of work bring it 100% of your
- focus while you're on your boss's clock
- no distractions now
- I also add that this means don't take
- calls at work from your wife or your
- girlfriend that's a common thing that a
- lot of guys do because we don't want our
- wife or girlfriend upset at us so we
- didn't talk to him while it were
- but I tell them here's an interesting
- phenomenon if your woman knows you'll
- cheat your boss by talking with her wall
- at work she'll also wonder if you'll
- cheat on her - now we guys may say well
- they're not the same thing but - a
- woman's brain there's no difference okay
- so don't cheat don't cheat your boss
- don't cheat yourself now at the end of
- one week most people that have given
- this little challenge to to show up
- bring their a-game be a hundred percent
- in no distractions
- most report that the job is still not
- ideal but they had a good week they were
- more productive they didn't give bored
- and they actually you know enjoyed
- showing up for work so what every excuse
- you have her cheating your boss drop it
- where there's they don't pay me enough
- they work me too much they're morons
- they only reward the ass kissers why
- bother it doesn't make a difference they
- don't appreciate me this week really
- show up be the best damn employee in
- your entire unit you're tired the
- division or Department and also don't
- cheat yourself don't give them your body
- your soul or your life go home on time
- they don't own you they just sign your
- paychecks so many people I work with are
- afraid that if they go home on time or
- don't stay as late as their boss or
- coworkers they'll get bad reviews and
- even they'll get fired
- you know what I've worked with a lot of
- managers and I'll ask him about this
- I'll ask him if you have a guy that's
- showing up being a best damn employee
- well he's at work he's giving you 100%
- no distraction he's all in but he goes
- home on time doesn't take bunch of work
- home on weekends and comes back the next
- morning and he's ready to go again I've
- asked him would you fire that guy and
- every manager I've ever asked to I
- assume they're being straight with me
- every manager I've ever asked said they
- would like an entire department of
- people like this now when necessary put
- in the extra extra hours but when at
- work give your boss 100% when it's time
- to go home
- give yourself
- 100% so game changer number three don't
- cheat your employer or yourself game
- changer
- number four educate your boss now I've
- often heard it said that most people
- don't quit their job they quit
- management so whether you have a good
- boss or a crappy one your job is to
- educate them I call this trickle up and
- it's part of being a best damn employee
- now I've listened to enough people talk
- about their jobs and I follow the news
- and I stay pretty well-informed about
- the business world and I've come to the
- opinion that basically in most companies
- management makes problems and then
- expects frontline workers to clean up
- their messes now this happens at every
- level up the ladder probably VPS are
- cleaning up the messes of the CEO above
- them you know and you've seen it in
- management they they'll over promise
- something that there's no way they can
- deliver either that product or on time
- they'll pull deadlines out of their ass
- goals out of their ass quotas out of
- their ass expectations out of their ass
- and then go okay here's the plan and you
- wonder where they came up with the plan
- other than they just made it up so they
- make this stuff up and then they hand it
- to the people below them and say get it
- done and they expect them to do it I
- mean just a couple of examples I've
- lived most of my life in the Seattle
- area and Boeing has always been a major
- player in Seattle
- well they you know made a lot of their
- own share of messes and one of the most
- recent one is that the 787 Dreamliner or
- as we call it in Seattle the dream
- smoker because of all the battery
- problems it had batteries catching on
- fire but this thing was riddled with
- problems from day one and and apparently
- it's a good airplane and they've gotten
- a lot of bugs worked out but it was
- delayed for years getting out and a
- primary reason they had so many problems
- was because of management management had
- the bright idea of this build every
- different part of this airplane in a
- different part of the world and by
- giving jobs to people in Ireland or
- Japan or here or there
- then maybe the airlines and those
- companies are the government's in those
- in those countries will then buy the
- airplane because we came and we built
- part of it there well that sounds like
- maybe a bright idea to management when
- it actually came to putting airplanes
- together it sucked the the parts didn't
- fit together they had to start
- customizing parts they had to start
- taking an ownership back of some of the
- things they're rebuilding they even gave
- the the building of the wing the leading
- edge that's usually very secretive in
- the airline industry they gave it to be
- built in a whole different country
- outside the United States and every
- management decision that they thought
- was a great idea to sell airplanes
- turned into be a terrible idea to build
- the airplanes and guess who got stuck
- with cleaning up the messes
- it wasn't management of course they
- always just get their golden parachutes
- and move on I'm not trying to be bitter
- but this is the way a lot of
- corporations work okay just a reality
- unfortunately in too many major
- corporations management primarily cares
- about two things their bonuses and
- shareholder return unfortunately too few
- management's care about employee
- satisfaction quality service or product
- or customer satisfaction now again I'm
- not trying to be negative or bitter I
- just recognize the reality of the
- working world out there so if you work
- for a company that has a culture of
- making upper management and shareholders
- wealthy at the expense of employee and
- cust
- and the customers and the product you
- might want to consider a breakup and go
- find a company that does care about
- what's important and we'll get back to
- that in game-changer number 10 down the
- road here a little bit and if your
- company does care about their employees
- their customers and their product count
- your blessings and get all in but no
- matter what your job is to communicate
- to have a voice I worked with a VP of
- Boeing several years ago and he told me
- because he'd come to me at times that
- can't even just play mind games with me
- he really didn't want to be there and
- I'd call him on his and I go you
- with me again and he go yeah
- yeah
- was and after about four sessions he
- decided he didn't want to do therapy
- anymore but they ended the last session
- he goes you know as much as I didn't
- like coming to see you
- I kind of did because you are the only
- person in my entire world that ever
- calls me on my I'm surrounded by
- yes men I never hear the truth from
- anybody alright
- so communicate be honest ask for help
- communicate whatever needs to be
- communicated to your boss its trickle up
- so this week schedule a meeting with
- your manager tell him or her about your
- plan on being their best
- damn employee tell them what you need to
- succeed tell them how you need them to
- communicate with you tell them what tell
- them that you'll tell them no at times
- or it can't be done by then tell them
- that every time they pile too much on
- your plate you're going to ask them
- what's the highest priority and then
- that's what you'll focus on tell them
- that you will let them know when you
- need help tell them that you are going
- to communicate with them regularly so
- they won't have to guess where you're at
- or what's going on with you again every
- manager I've ever asked I would they
- would take it if their employee did this
- every one of them has said I wish I had
- a whole team of people like this so
- educate your boss game-changer number
- five say no I'm gonna tell you the story
- this is about a client of mine that I
- first started working with him several
- years ago and when he came to see me for
- a session about possibility of joining
- one of my groups he talked about his
- frustration of work now he worked for
- one of the largest and you know
- wealthiest software companies in the
- world and he came in and he said you
- know I'm I love my job
- I like so many things about it but he
- said I I'm just working all the time
- it's affecting my marriage I taking work
- home on weekends I take work home every
- night I'm never without my laptop and I
- just I just can't ever get anything done
- and I said well what seems to be getting
- in the way and he goes I just I just
- have so much to do I never get it all
- done and it's
- let me see your staff your calendar your
- scheduled so we pulled this phone out
- showed me his schedule and this guy had
- like five to six meetings every day at
- work and I said why do you have so many
- meetings and he goes well you know
- people give me these requests and you
- don't come to this meeting be at this
- meeting want your this meeting and he
- said so I go to all these meetings I
- can't get any work done and so I have to
- go do it at night or on weekends I said
- well I could see where that's a problem
- and I said tell me what is your goal at
- this company he said well my goal is
- someday be a general manager maybe even
- a vice president at this company I said
- okay I'm going to tell you one major
- characteristic of vice presidents they
- tell people no and I said let's make
- that you're working mantra at your
- company vice presidents say no and he
- started doing this he started carrying
- out this mantra of saying no to things
- that were not important or they didn't
- have time to do or that he didn't need
- to be there and not only did he start
- having more time at home during the week
- he started getting more work done but he
- also started progressing very quickly at
- this very large company and within a
- year of practicing that mantra vice
- presidents say no he applied for the job
- to be the CEOs personal speechwriter
- it's a two-year gig and he got that job
- and so for two years he flew all over
- the world in a CEOs private jet to every
- country in the world writing his
- speeches and making his presentations
- for him all because he learned to say no
- now it wasn't all because of that he was
- also a very smart very talented guy but
- every successful person says no
- regularly is a very powerful key to
- success now I hate telling people no
- because I don't want to disappoint them
- I know a lot of people fear getting a
- bad reputation or even getting demoted
- or fired if they don't say yes to
- everything so I'm gonna encourage you
- confront your fear of getting fired
- confront your fear of disappointing
- people and every day here's your
- challenge say no to at least one
- legitimate request and don't offer any
- explanation or excuse to say sorry I
- won't be able to do that now
- given this challenge countless times to
- people in my online classes nice guys
- don't finish last a rotten middle
- management could so many guys have such
- a hard time saying no and you know it
- creates so much guilt and anxiety for
- them to say no especially when they can
- do it
- but it's a powerful tool to not only get
- your work done but to be a best damn
- employee for your entire department so
- soothe your anxiety get back to work
- believe it or not learning to say no
- might be one of the most powerful game
- changers you can do it work so this week
- say no that wraps up part 1 of this
- two-part podcast even if you can't
- listen to part two right away start
- applying the five challenges from this
- podcast to your job this week every day
- practice the five game-changers I
- presented number one on your job number

- old boy I get to three don't cheat your
- employer or yourself four educate your
- boss and five say no print out the cheat
- sheet that I've made the list actually

- remind you because you're not only
- breaking some bad old habits but you
- also need to stay conscious to make some
- new good habits so here's what's coming
- in part two we're gonna talk about five
- more game changers we're going to talk
- about asking people for help
