1. Alexandr Stepanovich Popov was a Russian physicist. He was one of the first persons to invent a radio receiving device.

2. Alexandr was born in Krasnoturinsk. His father wanted him to become a priest, but he developed an interest in science and mathematics and in 1877 he enrolled at Saint Petersburg University, where he studied physics.

3. Alexandr graduated with honors in 1882 and stayed at the university as a laboratory assistant. But the salary was not enough to support his family, so the next year he became a teacher and head of laboratory at the Russian Navy's Torpedo School.

4. At that naval school Alexandr conducted some researches. He was interested in exploration of high-frequency electrical currents. And his most famous work was, as I already said in the beginning, the creation of a radio receiving device.

5. In 1900 a radio station was established under Popov's instructions on Hogland island. In 1905 Alexandr became the director of the Electrotechnical institute. That was also the year when he became seriously ill. He died of a brain hemorrhage on January 13 1906.
