  1. Upgrade your appliances! This is a more costly route of course, but one of the best. Start with your water heater, buy energy efficient models and you will see instant differences. The truth is those new energy efficient models are the best and work great. Dryers are big meter spinners, switch to gas and again go energy efficient. We use our dryers a lot and they draw a lot of power. Spending the money on a new more efficient model will bring great rewards. Get rid of window air conditioners, switch to central air. Again a bit costly, but worth the initial expense.

  3. Update your furnace, it runs all the time and there are some terrific efficient brands out there, like Tempstar and Tappan. These new models run literally at half the expense. This is the case with many appliances. You may love how strong one of them old units are and how good they have been to you, but the truth is they are eating up the bill and get worse each day. Avoid space heaters or at least be very aware, some of those small units draw more than a furnace.
