BLOODBORNE TRANSLATION PASTEBIN THING

This document is a compilation of Japanese -> English transliterations done by Reddit user TowerWalker. Some of these were posted publicly on the Bloodborne subreddit, others come from my personal correspondence with TowerWalker. Certain entries have commentary by either TowerWalker or myself (Richie), which will follow the translations in square brackets [Richie: Like this].

1. BOSS NAMES

	Cleric Beast (聖職者の獣, seishokusha no kemono - Clergy Beast)

	Priest Gascoigne (ガスコイン神父, Gascoin Shinpu - Priest Gascoign)

	Blood-Starved Beast (血に渇いた獣, chi ni katsuita kemono - Blood Thirst Beast)
	[TowerWalker: This one is a bit awkward to translate, but it's basically saying the "beast that has been made thirsty for
	blood", I guess since English doesn't have a formal past tense word for "made thirsty" (though I guess "parched" would work)
	they went with starved]

	Vicar Amelia (教区長エミーリア, kyoukuchou emiiria - Parish Leader Amelia)

	Witch of Hemwick (ヘムウィックの魔女, hemuwikku no majo - Witch of Hemwick)

	Darkbeast Paarl (黒獣パール, Kuro Kemono Paaru)
	[Richie: "Kuro" means "Black". I guess "Blackbeast" fits aesthetically with "Silverbeast".]

	Amygdala (アメンドーズ, amendoozu - Amendoze)
	[TowerWalker: Really confused by this one. Amendoze is NOT the Japanese word that refers to the brain's amygdala or the
	tonsils (which is what amygdala means in Latin), I figured they wanted to keep the exotic sounding name but also wanted to
	keep the name relevant. On the otherhand, amygdala is also latin for "almond" which sounds kinda similar to amendoze in
	Japanese (アーモンド, aamondo) so it's possible the translators though the name was referring to the original Latin meaning.]

    	Shadow of Yharnam (ヤーナムの影, yaanam no kage)

    	Martyr Logarius (殉教者ローゲリウス, junkyousha roogerius, Martyr Logarius)

    	Rom, the Vacuous Spider (白痴の蜘蛛、ロマ, towake no kumo roma - Foolish Spider Roma)
	[Reddit User Seitanical: 白雉 is pronounced はくち and means mental retardation.]
	[TowerWalker, in reply: 白痴 can be pronounced as both towake and hakuchi. But yes, hakuchi is probably the more predominant
	way of saying it.]
	[Richie: So Rom could be mentally impaired rather than simply "vacuous". Whatever happened to her brain could have also
	happened to Willem's, hence his current state.]

	The One Reborn (再誕者, saitansha/saitanmono - The Resurrected One / The Rebirthed One)

	Micolash, Host of the Nightmare (悪夢の主ミコラーシュ, akumu no aruji micoraashu - Master of the Nightmare, Micolash)
	[Richie: Micolash is the "host" in the sense that one hosts a dinner party; the Nightmare of Mensis isn't literally taking
	place inside his head. The same word, "Aruji", is used as Manus' title in Dark Souls, and there it's translated as "Father"
	for some reason. Frognation seem to have a vendetta against it. It means "Master" or "Lord" as well as "Host".]

   	Mergo's Wetnurse (メルゴーの乳母, Merugo no Uba/Menoto)
	[Richie: "Uba" is a wet nurse. "Menoto" refers to a surrogate family who would raise the children of royalty, which included a
	wet nurse but was not limited to her.]

    	Celestial Emissary (星界からの使者, seikai kara no shisha - Messenger/Emissary of the Stars)
	[TowerWalker: The word "stars" here refers to stars as in planets.]
	[Richie: Is "Shisha" also used for the Messenger in the dream?]
	[TowerWalker: Yes, it's the same.]

    	Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos (星の娘、エーブリエタース, hoshi no musume/jou, eebrietaasu - Daughter of the Stars Ebrietas)
	[TowerWalker: seikai 星界 literally means "star world." A planet that is among the stars in the sky, the best equivalent is if
	you say "Celestial Body". hoshi 星 is just the word for star or stars. In the case of Ebrietas you could take it as meaning
	she was literally born from the stars/suns/constellations. This probably why they translated it as Cosmos, since Cosmos refers
	to all of those things].

    	Gehrman, The First Hunter (最初の狩人ゲールマン, saishou no karyuudo geeruman - First Hunter Gehrman)

    	Moon Prescence (月の魔物 - Tsuki no Mamono)
	[TowerWalker: This last one is a bit difficult to translate literally so I'll explain it in detail. Japanese has two words for
	"beast": 獣 kemono, which refers to beasts as in animals, things that actually exist or can be described as beasts, and 魔物
	mamono, which means refers to supernatural beasts like "monsters." It can be translated literally as monster, magic beast,
	apparition, etc. It's likely that The Moon Presence is referred to as Mamono to imply that it's beyond our understanding or
	different from the beasts that aren't Great Ones.]

	Bloodletting Beast (獣血の主, Kemono Chi no Aruji - Host/Master/Lord of the Beast Blood)
	[Richie: I did this one myself, so possibly inaccurate. The characters read "Beast", "Blood", (possessive), "Host/Master
	/Lord", thus "Lord of the Beast Blood". Once again, "Aruji" is translated bizarrely. My take on the use of "Bloodletting" in
	the English name is to imply that either the beast was bled and its blood collected by the Church for ministration purposes OR
	that Laurence (for it is he) was engaged in bloodletting to try and get the beast blood out of his body in an attempt to halt
	or reverse his transformation.]

2. LOCATIONS

	The Hunter's Dream (狩人の夢 - Karyuudo no Yume)
	[TowerWalker: Whether "Hunter/s" is singular or plural is ambiguous.]

3. CHARACTERS

	The Doll (人形 ningyou - Doll)
	[Richie: There are a bunch of different kinds of Japanese doll, like Karakuri (mechanical) and Iki (realistic). Does the game
	specify a type?]
	[TowerWalker: Ningou is not any type of doll in particular. The North American translation does have "Just a plain doll" when
	you look at her when she's not animate. I think this is how the name stuck, since in the original Japanese it just says: "A
	Doll that's been abandoned/thrown away" (人形が捨てられている　- ningyou ga suterareteiru), the European translation reflects
	this: "An abandoned doll."]

4. STATS

	Insight (啓蒙 keimou - Enlightenment)

	Blood Echoes (血の遺志 chi no ishi - Blood's Dying Will)
	[TowerWalker: The Japanese name of Blood Echoes is "血の遺志" (chi no ishi) which in English literally translates to "Blood's
	Dying Wish/Will." I think if you compare 遺志 (ishi) to "Echoes", it's trying to reflect that something that's "left behind",
	like an echo refers to the remains of a soundwave or to the actions of a person. With this in mind it's saying "the lasting
	will of the blood".]
