  1. I think...it started with a dream.
  2. I found myself floating in a white void. A loud voice boomed overhead.
  3. “Son of Man, the final test is upon you.”
  4. “Final test?”
  5. “Soon, you will be flung into a disaster that none have ever witnessed. It will be the final battle between the heavens and hell for the souls of humanity. You, son of man, will play a key role in this battle.”
  6. “What role?”
  7. Suddenly, a beautiful woman appeared before me. There was no better way to describe her than as a goddess, and something inside me told me that I wasn't off in my guess.
  8. “You have been chosen to become the representative of heaven. You, dear child, will become the Messiah.”
  9. “M-Messiah?”
  10. “Yes, the savior of humanity.”
  11. She glided over to my side, and with a flick of her hand, formed the image of a boy. He looked to be around my age, but he had a harsh look in his eyes.
  12. “This boy is the chosen representative of hell. His name is Seth.”
  13. “Seth?”
  14. The name seemed familiar, but as I tried to recall, the goddess brought me into a hug.
  15. “It is your destiny to defeat him, Devon. Only then will mankind be saved.”
  16. “B-But isn't this a bit too much for someone like me?”
  17. “Do not fret, young one. You have more allies than you know. They will help you during this trial.”
  18. Despite the questions I had, I eventually came to, finding myself back in bed.
  19.
  20. A week later...disaster struck.
  21. Lightning struck the tallest building in the city at around noon that day. Power in the area had been cut, and all forms of communication had all but died. At first we thought it was a result of the thunder strike, but then the truth revealed itself.
  22. A tear in the sky appeared, and from it demons rained down on the city. Within hours, much of Ittica's population had been ripped to shreds by the demons. Some tried to escape the city, but when they did, divine lightning struck them down. It was clear then that those of us in the city were trapped inside.
  23. But there was hope, even during this crisis...
  24.
  25. It had been a few hours after the crisis started. Me and my two close friends were huddled in an apartment when our phones rang.
  26. “Hey, I thought the cell service was down.” Sean said as he checked the number.
  27. “Maybe it's a government phone call?” Yuuki commented.
  28. “Well, there's only one to find out.” Even though my hands trembled, I answered the call.
  29. “Hello?”
  30. “Greetings, it seems you have survived the culling.”
  31. The voice on the other side of the line was that of a man. His tone was gentle, but it was one that also demanded a lot of respect.
  32. “I will not waste your time with pleasantries, so I will make this quick: do you wish to live or die?”
  33. The air went cold when we heard that question. For a while, none of us could answer. But then Sean asked,
  34. “What'll happen if we say we want to die?”
  35. “Then I shall strike you where you stand. I have no use for those who lack the will to live” the voice answered. In my mind, I remembered the people who had been struck by lightning, and the agony written on their faces. I swallowed hard.
  36. “What if we want to live?”
  37. “Then I shall give you the tools to survive this ordeal.”
  38. “What kind of tools?” Yuuki asked,
  39. “You will know when you receive them. So, I ask again: Do you wish to live or do you wish to die?”
  40. We looked at one another, then back at our phones. The answer was obvious, but we were still scared of what might happen. And so, with all our might, we said.
  41. “””I want to live!”””
  42. The next thing I remember, I heard the man's voice in my ear.
  43. “Very well. We shall see where your fates lead, children of Man.”
