  32. Personality: Derek is very creative and mature. He is a very deep and philosophical thinker, and is often lost in his own thoughts. He's pretty serious a lot of the time and always focuses on the task at hand. However, he can be funny at times. He tends to make very bad jokes/puns to cheer people up. He also has THE. LOUDEST. LAUGH. ON. PLANET. EARTH. It's super easy to make him laugh, and when you do make him laugh, you won't be able to get the sound out of your head. Don't let his cute looks fool you, he can't stand doing aegyo. He prefers to be seen as more mature, but at the same time is grossed out when people call him sexy. He's very dedicated to his craft, and doesn't let anything stop him from achieving his dreams of music stardom. He's also pretty down-to-earth, and tries to remain normal in spite of the constant media eye. He can be very stubborn at times, and sometimes needs to actually be pulled out of the practice room to stop practicing because he's just so determined and focused on making his dreams come true, even if he has to bust his butt and run himself into the ground to do it.

  34. Background: Derek Lee was born on September 7, 1999 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada to Korean parents. He was the younger of two siblings (he has a sister named Mari who is 5 years older). He came from a musical family, with a guitar teacher for a dad and a pianist and voice teacher for a mom. He was immersed into music at a young age, and naturally found a love for singing. He would sing at his church and in little assemblies since kindergarten. However, as much as people loved his singing, there was something else about him that a lot of people really judged. You see, Derek had something called Asperger syndrome. It's an developmental disorder characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. As a milder autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it differs from other ASDs by relatively normal language and intelligence. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and unusual use of language are common. Derek was always a shy boy, and had trouble controlling his emotions or outbursts. He was bullied a lot in school because of it, and it really got him down, to the point where he really only had God, his family, and music. When he was about 8. began writing poems about how he felt and his experiences. He has continued this on until today. When he was 10, however, his big sister, who was really into rapping, talked about how he could turn the poem into a rap. Derek was a little confused at first, but with help from Mari he figured it out. He actually began to enjoy it, and by the time he was 12, he was a seasoned pro, and on top of that, he was no longer being bullied over his Asperger's and had developed a new confidence. Derek always knew he wanted to pursue a musical career. He just wasn't quite sure where and how he would do it. However, then, when he was 13, a friend of his told him about Kpop. Derek was really interested, and figured he'd give it a shot. He tried out for SM, YG, JYP, Cube, and FNC, but was rejected by all of them. Derek was frustrated, but just refused to give up. His fortunes changed when he was 15, and on a vacation with his family in Korea. He ran into a boy (who he later learned was Samuel Kim) who told him that his company, Brave Entertainment, was looking for new trainees. Derek asked his parents if he could audition, and his parents said yes. After auditioning, he was accepted into the company, and went back to Canada to pack his bags for Seoul officially. His parents and sister hugged him goodbye and are still cheering him on.

  36. Message to other trainees: Good luck to everyone! I hope to make good friends with all of you and I hope you will like me! No matter what happens, let's get along well and support each other, okay?
