- Battle Mode
- - The title screen has three options: Normal Game, Battle Game, and
- Options.
- - Normal Mode has three options:
- Saisho kara | New Game
- Tsuzuki kara | Load Game
- File o kesu | Delete File
- - Battle Mode is the deathmatch mode that Bomberman is likely most
- known for.
- - Options has three items: Password, Sound setting (Stereo/Mono), and
- a Sound Test.
- - Passwords can be used to trigger various effects, mostly in Battle
- Mode.
- - The play area in stages is usually 13x11 tiles/blocks in size.
- - Bombs explode after 2,5 seconds or if they're hit with fire from
- another bomb.
- - In regards to bomb placement and damage, a subject is not considered
- to be standing on a tile unless at least half of their collision hitbox
- is on the tile.
- - As is typical, Bomberman dies from one hit by default. You start off
- with 3 lives and can have at most 9 lives. When you die, you lose all
- power ups except the ones that affect your base parameters (bomb count,
- fire range and speed). Running out of lives results in a game over,
- which causes even your base parameters to be reset.
- - In 2-player mode, your life stock is shared, and a dead player can
- respawn at any time by pressing Start. A second player can also join
- mid-game in single player mode.
- - Bombermen and bosses are invincible for 6 seconds at the beginning
- of play.
- - If a subject with more than 1 HP gets hit, they'll be invincible for
- a moment: 2 seconds for Bombermen and bosses, 3 seconds for normal
- enemies.
- - If a bomb lands on a Bomberman or a boss (usually because it was
- thrown or punched), they'll be briefly stunned. In Battle Mode, this
- will also cause the subject to drop a power up.
- - Each non-boss stage has a three minute (and one second) time limit.
- If time runs out, you lose a life. There's no warning of any kind if
- time is running out. Running out of time is a very real possibility in
- some of the tougher stages if you have few items.
- - If tossed beyond the outer boundaries of a stage, bombs and players
- will wrap and appear from the opposite side.
- - SBM5 doesn't feature the standard, large bosses that you would come
- to expect if you played other installments. Instead, boss fights are
- basically one-on-one Battle Mode fights (ie. the bosses attack using
- bombs, they can pick up power-ups, and they won't kill you with body
- contact). If you haven't played a lot of Battle Mode, you will likely
- find the bosses much harder than the typical large ones.
- - Another prominent aspect about this installment is how it features
- non-linear stage progression. Most stages have multiple exit gates
- that take you to different stages. The gates will glow either gold
- or purple depending on whether or not you've already completed the
- stage it takes you to: gold if you haven't, purple if you have.
- - Many boss stages have different versions that feature different exit
- gates, but are otherwise identical. Completing any version of a boss
- will turn all gates leading to the boss purple.
- - A few stages have gates that you won't be able to reach from certain
- sections of the stage, as the path will be blocked by another gate.
- - Bombing the gates will *not* produce enemies.
- - The first four worlds indeed feature zones and enemies from the first
- four Super Bomberman games, although none of the stages are exact copies.
- - On the world map, you can freely start playing from any stage you've
- already completed (ie. marked with a teal color). Stages you haven't
- completed are red. You can start playing from an unfinished stage if
- it's the most recent stage you've played (ie. marked in gold).
- - If you choose a boss stage with multiple versions on the world map,
- you'll end up in the most recent version of the stage you've been to.
- - There are 100 stages in total (and 3 special stages that don't count
- towards your completion). If you reach 100% completion by beating every
- stage, your progress will reset, but this time you'll find extra items.
- If you reach 200%, you'll just get a couple of codes.
- - You also get more items in 2 player mode. These items are listed near
- the end of the guide.
- - If you're just about to start a stage with one player, holding Start
- on the other controller allows a second player to spawn immediately
- (thus triggering the 2P item set).
- - You unceremoniously receive a One Up every 10 000 points.
- - Killing multiple enemies with the same explosion or chain of explosions
- gives you a constantly doubling point multiplier starting with 2 for every
- subsequent kill after the first one. (Eg. killing three enemies worth
- 100p gives you 100+200+400.)
- - In 2 player mode, both players receive the points from bosses and
- enemy structures.
- - The soundtrack features some clown music, quite literally. If you
- don't like what you're hearing, go for the mute button.
- Items / Power Ups
- - Your default base parameters are: bomb count 1, fire range 2, and
- 224 speed. In Battle Mode, default speed is 256.
- - Both bomb count and fire range max out at 8. The default values are
- the minimum values.
- - A Speed Up increases speed by 32, up to a maximum of 512. An increase
- of 32 allows you to move 0,5 tiles farther in one second. Eg. with 256
- speed, you move 4 tiles per second. With max speed, you move 8 tiles
- per second. Minimum speed is 128.
- - I never pick up any Fire Ups myself, as it allows you to use bomb
- moving abilities with the most safety. I also avoid max speed, since
- it's a bit unwieldy.
- - Some power ups are mutually exclusive: [Piercing / Mine / Remote /
- Seeker] and [Kick / Bombthrough]. Picking up another item from the
- group will thus replace the previous one.
- - Picking up a power up gives you points if you already have that power
- up or if it's an attribute that's already at its limit.
- Bomb Up 200
- Fire Up 200
- Speed Up 200
- Speed Down (Geta) 400
- Full Fire 400
- - Set fire range to max.
- Bomb Kick 400
- - Bump a bomb to kick it. Press X to stop the bomb (only works on your
- own bombs).
- Bomb Punch 400
- - Punch bombs 3 tiles away with Y.
- Throw (Power Glove) 600
- - Press and hold A while standing on a bomb to pick it up. Release to
- throw it 3 tiles away. You can cook the bomb by waiting before picking
- it up.
- Land Mine (Jirai Bomb) 400
- - Mines disappear soon after being set and will detonate with a 0,7s
- delay when walked on. Only one can be placed at a time (except when
- used by a boss). Mines can't be detected by normal enemies.
- - Easily a cause of self-ownage, this is the worst power up you can
- pick up.
- Piercing Bomb (Kantsuu Bomb) 400
- - A bomb whose fire penetrates burnable blocks and items.
- Remote Controller 800
- - Detonate bombs at will by pressing B (one at a time, starting from
- the earliest one placed).
- Seeker Bomb (Tsuiseki Bomb) 400
- - Chases a target if one is detected within three steps. Only one can
- be placed at a time. The target can't be switched.
- - Unaffected by shifting floor tiles and magnets.
- - If you're playing in 2P mode, you need to be careful of friendly fire.
- The only subject the bomb ignores is the one who placed it. Even in 1P
- mode, it can possibly lead to some self-ownage if you fail to predict
- the bomb's movement.
- Bombthrough (Bomb Tsuuka) 600
- - Walk through bombs. Bombs will still stun you if they land on you.
- Wallthrough (Block Tsuuka) 600
- - Walk through burnable blocks.
- Heart 600
- - +1 HP. Can't have more than two.
- Egg (Tamago)
- - Gives you a random Rooey.
- 1 Up 600
- Timer [Clock]
- - Freeze enemies and the time limit for 16 seconds. Even when frozen,
- enemies can still damage you.
- Invincibility Vest (Muteki Suit)
- - Become invincible for 16 seconds.
- Skull/Virus (Dokuro)
- - Gives you a random, counterproductive condition. These include: 128 Speed,
- 1024 Speed, Fire 1, fast fuse (1,5s), slow fuse A (3,5s), slow fuse B (4,0s),
- auto bomb drop, reverse controls, non-stop motion, unable to place bombs.
- - You can lose the virus by picking up any other item or by passing it on
- to someone else by touching them.
- - Can't be destroyed with fire.
- - Mainly found in Battle Mode.
- - SBM5 also features Rooeys, kangaroo companions that you can ride. Rooeys
- have 1 HP and possess various abilities (one each), as seen below.
- - You can't use Punch or Throw while riding a Rooey.
- - Four bosses start off riding an evil Rooey appropriately called Warooey.
- This one has no special ability, however, and essentially just gives the
- boss one more HP.
- Kerooey | Blue | Kick
- Girooey | Yellow | Block Kick
- Hanerooey | Pink | Jump
- Magicarooey | Purple | Line Bomb
- Marooey | Green | Roll
- Nagurooey | Red | Stun Punch
- - Kicking blocks will not affect the items they may contain.
- - With precise timing, jumping can be used to avoid fire. You can't jump
- into a burnable block even if you have Wallthrough (possibly an oversight).
- - Rolling will move you as far as possible in the direction you're facing
- at a speed of 1024 (or 16 tiles/second).
- - Stun Punch is completely useless in Normal Mode. Not even bosses are
- affected. In Battle Mode, it indeed briefly stuns the target.
- - There are a few things than can cause you to drop individual power ups.
- When this happens, items are lost in the order listed below (Remote is
- the highest priority, Fire is the lowest).
- Remote Piercing
- Punch Mine
- Kick Bomb
- Seeker Speed
- Throw Fire
- Movement Types
- - Enemies generally move straight forward until they hit something they
- can't pass (at which point they may turn or do a u-turn) or detect a
- priority target, which they will then seek for as long as the target
- is in detection range.
- - I use numbers for turning behavior and letters for the priority target
- variable.
- - Enemies can generally only perform an action when standing exactly in
- the middle of a tile.
- - Most enemies that attack (or perform some type of action that grounds
- them in place) will start moving in a random direction after attacking
- (unless they're detecting a priority target).
- - Even power ups can block the sight of B and C type enemies.
- - D-type enemies have a 7x7 tile detection range.
- - Enemies that can detect you beyond walls have very poor pathfinding
- abilities.
- - Enemies are unaffected by shifting floor tiles (quicksand / conveyor
- belt).
- - WT = Wallthrough
- 1: Can only turn when hitting a wall. Will always turn right, if possible.
- 2: Always turn when hitting a wall (right, if possible).
- 3: Unable to turn unless u-turn isn't possible.
- 4: Always attempt to turn left or right when a turn is possible. Will
- head straight if chosen turn isn't possible. Can't u-turn outside
- of dead ends.
- 5. Move freely (Priority E)
- A: No priority target.
- B: Priority target: Bomberman. Any clear, cardinal direction.
- C: Priority target: Bomb. Any clear, cardinal direction.
- D. Priority target: Bomberman. Proximity:
- E. Priority target: Bomberman.

- - There's nothing special about any of these zones. The blocks in the
- Carnival Zone shrink into nothing and then expand back, but this is
- purely cosmetic.
- Enemies
- - Official enemy names are in brackets after the generic name.
- Heli Bot | 1 HP, 1A | 100
- - As basic as an enemy can get in Bomberman.
- Slime Bot | 1 HP, 1A | 300
- - Can turn itself (mostly) invisible. The animation is 7 seconds long,
- and they're invulnerable during that time.
- Bomb Bot a | 1 HP, 1A | 300
- - Can detonate itself like a bomb. Happens every 10 seconds. Fire range 4.
- Capable of friendly fire. Invincible while detonating.
- - If the enemy starts off trapped and can't move, it won't be able to
- detonate, not even after being freed unless it's freed before it tries
- to detonate for the first time.
- Green Tank | 3 HP, 1A | 400
- - The tanks will randomly use their flamethrower, which has 4 range.
- Coin Face | 1 HP, 1A | 400
- Bomb Eater | 1 HP, 2C | 200
- - Eats bombs.
- Knight Bot | 4 HP, 2B | 600

- |____________| + Throw
- - 2 HP, 3 F, Land Mine. The first boss is actually one of the harder
- ones. He'll keep laying mines until there are four of them, and once
- there are, he'll start using normal bombs. Chances are you won't be
- able to remember the exact locations of the mines, but at least try to
- maintain a vague sense of where they are. Not getting wasted by the
- mines is nice, but that alone isn't enough; you still have to take out
- the boss somehow. Grabbing the Kick is mainly useful, because getting
- it means the boss can't use it. Actually using it on the boss is not
- very effective, however. Instead, the best way to score a hit is to
- trap the boss while he's laying a mine.
- - This guy's already fast by default, so you definitely don't want him
- to pick up any of those Speed Ups.
- - Regarding the mines, if your speed is really high, you can just outrun
- the fire.

- | 2-02 | Speed Up 1000 each (3 HP in 2P)
- 1-S | | Punch
- | |
- |____________| + Kick
- - Kotetsu has a sword and will kill you if he gets next to you.
- - Honey has a gun and will try to shoot you on sight. If you're within 4
- tiles of her, she'll move back one tile before shooting (unless the path
- is blocked). She also has Punch and Kick. The Punch is special and knocks
- bombs 6 tiles away.
- - Kotetsu and Honey can't set bombs or pick up any items. Also, these
- fights have a time limit unlike other bosses. They don't deal body
- contact damage, although getting past Kotetsu without getting sliced
- requires good timing.
- - The duo gets a little faster in subsequent zones (which makes trapping
- them in a corner less feasible).
- - These stages are not visible on the world map, they don't count towards
- your completion rate and you can't continue from them if you get a game
- over or quit playing. The game does still keep track of whether or not
- you've beaten these stages, and thus their gates will switch color
- accordingly.
- Zone 2
- Sub-Zones
- Demolition Zone | 1, 2, 3, 4
- Furnace Zone | 5, 6, 7, 8
- Spring Zone | 9, 10, 11
- Techno Zone | 12, 13, 14, 15
- Demolition Zone
- - Detonating the dynamite will cause piercing explosions (2 F) on the
- spot where the dynamite is and the four spots two tiles away around it.
- The surrounding explosions only have 1 F in the directions facing away
- from the dynamite.
- - Placing a bomb on one of the red marks will give that bomb max fire.
- Furnace Zone
- - One of the more annoying zones. The walls are flames that will respawn
- after 0-75 seconds (usually less than 10). 2-06 is the most dangerous
- one, with three spots on the right side where you can end up stuck.
- - A block that has respawned can't hold any item.
- - If you place a bomb in front of the furnace, it will get sucked in,
- thus activating the furnace. The furnace will then send out a trail of
- fire every 15 seconds that travels along the indicated path. I prefer
- not to activate them myself.
- - Block Kick is disabled in this zone.
- Spring Zone
- - The springs can launch you up to 4 tiles away. How far you'll go
- depends on how long you press in a given direction. You can even use
- them to jump beyond the outer walls and wrap. You're invulnerable
- while bouncing on a spring.
- Enemies
- Magnet Bot | 1 HP, 1A | 200
- - Pulls you in with magnetism if you're within 3 tiles. Doesn't stop
- until you're (pretty much) close enough to get hit. You can break the
- connection by placing a bomb.
- Mr. Moai | 2 HP, 3A | 200
- Bomb Bot b | 2 HP, 1A | 200
- - Gets a speed boost after taking damage. They won't start moving again
- until the invincibility from the first hit wears off.
- Flamethrower Bot | 1 HP, 1A | 200
- - Randomly shoots fire. Range 3.
- Headphone Bot | 2 HP, 1A | 200
- - They shoot electricity in cardinal directions if you're within 4 tiles.
- Range 1.
- Penguin | 1 HP, 1A | 100
- - Slides at you if you're within 6 tiles (direct line of sight only).
- Narcopac | 2 HP, 1A | 100
- - Falls asleep every ~5 seconds, which... does nothing, except make them
- easier to hit. They stay asleep for 9 seconds.
- R2 Bot | 2 HP, 4A | 400
- - Gets a speed boost after taking damage. They won't start moving again
- until the invincibility from the first hit wears off.

- Underwater Zone | 4, 5
- Desert Zone | 7, 8, 9, 10
- Winter Zone | 11
- UFO Zone | 12, 13, 14, 15
- Volcano Zone
- - 3-02 has a mine cart that you can ride. Riding over a block containing
- an item will destroy the item. Riding over an item that's been revealed
- does nothing.
- - 3-03 has a volcano that will rain fire on 5 random tiles every 11s.
- Underwater Zone
- - Going between the whirlpools will launch you in one direction.
- Desert Zone
- - The quicksand drags you and your bombs (+/-128 speed).
- - The quicksand pits suck you in and spit you out in the other one.
- After emerging, you'll be invincible for 1 second.
- Winter Zone
- - There are 7 spots (2 in the top-left, 2 in the lower right and 3 in
- the lower left) where the ice will break if you step on it twice.
- - The huge snowball will come rolling down if you destroy the nearest
- blocks.
- - The iglo slightly obstructs your view.
- UFO Zone
- - The conveyor belts move you and your bombs (+/-128 speed).
- - Damaging electricity runs between the Tesla coils at random intervals.
- They stay active for about 4 seconds. They don't damage enemies.
- - 3-12 is one of the hardest stages in the game, at least without a good
- plan. Create a narrow path that goes clockwise. This way you can take out
- the Toaster Bots without having to worry about the hazards.
- Enemies
- Dragonfly | 1 HP, 1A, WT | 300
- Medusa | 1 HP, 5E | 300
- - Generates electricity, which covers all eight, surrounding tiles.
- Toadstool | 1 HP, 1A | 400
- - Shoots deadly spores at you (direct line of sight only).
- Snowball Bot | 1 HP, 1A | 800
- - Mostly moves by bouncing
- Green Hood | 1 HP, 1B | 300
- - Randomly and frequently uses a boxing glove attack. Range 3.

- Circus Zone 5
- - There are some puddles that slow you down.
- Magnet Zone
- - There are magnets on the left and right walls that attract bombs when
- active. They activate every 6,5 seconds and stay active for 6 seconds.
- - There are also some shifting wall blocks that shift every 3-4 or 7-8
- seconds. The block can't shift if it's blocked.
- - There are some puddles that slow you down.
- - 5-17 can be a little tricky, as the inner walls consist entirely of
- moving walls. If you don't have Punch or Throw, stay on the left side
- and wait for the snake to come to you.
- Gear Zone
- - There are gear dispensers on the walls that shoot out gears, usually
- two at a time (occasionally one or three). The pace isn't that strict,
- but generally you get a batch every 4,5 seconds. You'll also get some
- longer intervals of about 8 seconds. In any case, the gears can easily
- end up taking out most of the enemies for you.
- - You need to use the small platform slowly moving back and forth to
- reach other sections of the stage. If you bomb the big, green gear, the
- platform will stop moving for 8 seconds.
- Enemies
- HiHat Bot | 1 HP, 5E | 400

- BBQ Bot | 2 HP, 2B | 600
- - Randomly shoots its flamethrower. 3 range.

- Cotton Candy | 1 HP, 1A | 100
- - Bounces you 6 tiles in the direction you're facing.
- Wire Bot | 1 HP, 5E | 100
- - Moves slowly one tile at a time.
- Radio Tower | 8 HP - | 1000
- - Has four legs with 2 HP each. Hitting multiple legs at the same time
- will only damage one leg due to hit invincibility.
- - Sends out four radio waves every 11 seconds, alternating between
- cardinal directions and diagonals. Bombermen are stunned if hit by a
- wave.
- Radio Bot | 1 HP, 5E | 200
- - Retransmits the tower's wave if hit by it, albeit with reduced signal
- strength (range 1 in cardinal directions). They're invincible while
- retransmitting it.
- Bomb Snake - Head| 2 HP, 2D | 100
- - Gets a speed boost once separated from the body.
- - Drops a random item when defeated: Bomb Up, Fire Up, Remote, Wallthrough,

- |____________|
- - Phase 1 (5 HP): You need to hit the bomb launcher while it's open. Their
- hit box does no damage, but you'll want to avoid the main body.
- - Phase 2 (5 HP): You need to hit the insides of the bell domes. He has
- two different attacks, but in both cases you'll want to place a bomb
- in the fifth row when the attack begins and then get to a safe spot. The
- machine is 9 tiles wide. The bell domes have a contact hitbox 3x3 tiles
- in size. The main body is too high to hit you (except briefly during the
- second attack), so you're safe in the middle. The more common attack is
- one where he just rolls in. The other attack has a faster startup. It
- also involves him charging in, but this time the bell domes don't come
- all the way down (there are 3 rows of safe space) and they won't damage
- you once they've stopped. After he stops, he smashes the ground at the
- bottom row with the main body (contact hitbox: 3x1 tiles), causing a
- quake that stuns you in place for 2,3 seconds. You could avoid the stun
- by touching the boundaries of the arena just before the quake hits, but
- this is hardly necessary.
- - Phase 3 (5 HP): 8F, 320 Speed, Throw. Don't try to fight him like the
- other bosses. Instead, wait for him to use his force field attack, at the
- end of which he'll create a special Clock item that will briefly freeze
- either you or him depending on who picks it up. If you get it, he'll
- freeze for 4 seconds. If he gets it, you'll freeze for 2,5 seconds. If
- you're too close when he picks it up, he'll probably be able to nail you.
- Only go for the Clock if you're certain you'll get it. Don't pick it up
- too quickly or the force field will still be on. The force field covers
- an area of 5x5 tiles and will both deal damage and detonate bombs, although
- fire won't penetrate the force field. You should be able to avoid the
- force field just fine so long as you stay away from the corners.

- - Beating this one gives you the fake ending.

- Battle Mode
- - Battle Mode offers three different modes: Battle Royale Mode, Maniac
- Mode, and Config Battle Mode.
- - The deathmatch can be either free-for-all or team-based (except in
- Maniac Mode). Even when team-based, friendly fire is still a thing.
- - Battle Royale is basic deathmatch.
- - Maniac Mode allows you to customize the items that are found in the
- stage. You can also use the Handicap option to adjust characters' HP.
- However, you can't change the rules, and you can only play in Stage 1.
- - Config Battle allows you to play deathmatch with custom characters.
- You can customize a character's appearance and default items. Indeed,
- you find no items within the stages themselves (except two Eggs). You
- have 12 points to use when customizing default items, with each item
- having a certain cost, as seen below.
- 9 Remote 3 Bombthrough 5 Punch
- 3 Piercing 4 Wallthrough 1 Bomb / Fire / Speed
- 2 Mine 5 Throw
- 6 Seeker 4 Kick
- - Once you've customized a character, the game gives you a code that
- you could use to create the same custom character on another copy of
- the game.
- - Config Battle keeps track of each character's number of wins and losses.
- - In the Rules screen, you can change the skill level of AI-controlled
- characters (Yowai (Weak) / Futsuu (Normal) / Tsuyoi (Strong)), how many
- rounds you need to win to win the match (1-5), time limit (1-5m / Inf.),
- Sudden Death (Off / On / Random), Misobon (Off / On / Super), and Bowling
- Bomber (Off / On).
- - Sudden Death refers to how the play area will be reduced during the
- last minute of play. When set to Off, the play area will be reduced to
- 9x7 tiles. Otherwise, it will be completely filled.
- - Misobon allows killed characters to ride a vehicle on the walls of
- the arena and throw bombs. If set to Super, a character will return
- to the arena if they manage to kill someone. Misobon is disabled once
- there's less than 1 minute of time left. Hold B to move faster.
- - Bowling Bomber is a mini-game the winner of the match gets to play.
- The winner will then start the next round with the item(s) they won
- in the mini-game.
- - When a character dies, all their items are spread around the arena.
- - There are 10 stages to choose from in Battle Mode. I only play 1 and
- 6 myself.
- 1. Itsumono | Classic Bomberman
- 2. Berukon dai | Features conveyor belts
- 3. Yane de kakurenbo | Features treetops that block your view
- 4. Light ga futatsu | Very dark with two moving spotlights
- 5. Subayaku hashiruze | 1024 Speed
- 6. Yuki da, koori da | Winter Zone
- 7. Magaruze Go | Arrows guide kicked bombs
- 8. Torokko ni norou | Features a minecart
