  15. Battle Mode
  16.
  17.
  18.
  19. - The title screen has three options: Normal Game, Battle Game, and
  20. Options.
  21. - Normal Mode has three options:
  22. Saisho kara | New Game
  23. Tsuzuki kara | Load Game
  24. File o kesu | Delete File
  25.
  26. - Battle Mode is the deathmatch mode that Bomberman is likely most
  27. known for.
  28.
  29. - Options has three items: Password, Sound setting (Stereo/Mono), and
  30. a Sound Test.
  31. - Passwords can be used to trigger various effects, mostly in Battle
  32. Mode.
  33.
  34. - The play area in stages is usually 13x11 tiles/blocks in size.
  35. - Bombs explode after 2,5 seconds or if they're hit with fire from
  36. another bomb.
  37. - In regards to bomb placement and damage, a subject is not considered
  38. to be standing on a tile unless at least half of their collision hitbox
  39. is on the tile.
  40. - As is typical, Bomberman dies from one hit by default. You start off
  41. with 3 lives and can have at most 9 lives. When you die, you lose all
  42. power ups except the ones that affect your base parameters (bomb count,
  43. fire range and speed). Running out of lives results in a game over,
  44. which causes even your base parameters to be reset.
  45. - In 2-player mode, your life stock is shared, and a dead player can
  46. respawn at any time by pressing Start. A second player can also join
  47. mid-game in single player mode.
  48. - Bombermen and bosses are invincible for 6 seconds at the beginning
  49. of play.
  50. - If a subject with more than 1 HP gets hit, they'll be invincible for
  51. a moment: 2 seconds for Bombermen and bosses, 3 seconds for normal
  52. enemies.
  53. - If a bomb lands on a Bomberman or a boss (usually because it was
  54. thrown or punched), they'll be briefly stunned. In Battle Mode, this
  55. will also cause the subject to drop a power up.
  56. - Each non-boss stage has a three minute (and one second) time limit.
  57. If time runs out, you lose a life. There's no warning of any kind if
  58. time is running out. Running out of time is a very real possibility in
  59. some of the tougher stages if you have few items.
  60. - If tossed beyond the outer boundaries of a stage, bombs and players
  61. will wrap and appear from the opposite side.
  62. - SBM5 doesn't feature the standard, large bosses that you would come
  63. to expect if you played other installments. Instead, boss fights are
  64. basically one-on-one Battle Mode fights (ie. the bosses attack using
  65. bombs, they can pick up power-ups, and they won't kill you with body
  66. contact). If you haven't played a lot of Battle Mode, you will likely
  67. find the bosses much harder than the typical large ones.
  68. - Another prominent aspect about this installment is how it features
  69. non-linear stage progression. Most stages have multiple exit gates
  70. that take you to different stages. The gates will glow either gold
  71. or purple depending on whether or not you've already completed the
  72. stage it takes you to: gold if you haven't, purple if you have.
  73. - Many boss stages have different versions that feature different exit
  74. gates, but are otherwise identical. Completing any version of a boss
  75. will turn all gates leading to the boss purple.
  76. - A few stages have gates that you won't be able to reach from certain
  77. sections of the stage, as the path will be blocked by another gate.
  78. - Bombing the gates will *not* produce enemies.
  79. - The first four worlds indeed feature zones and enemies from the first
  80. four Super Bomberman games, although none of the stages are exact copies.
  81. - On the world map, you can freely start playing from any stage you've
  82. already completed (ie. marked with a teal color). Stages you haven't
  83. completed are red. You can start playing from an unfinished stage if
  84. it's the most recent stage you've played (ie. marked in gold).
  85. - If you choose a boss stage with multiple versions on the world map,
  86. you'll end up in the most recent version of the stage you've been to.
  87. - There are 100 stages in total (and 3 special stages that don't count
  88. towards your completion). If you reach 100% completion by beating every
  89. stage, your progress will reset, but this time you'll find extra items.
  90. If you reach 200%, you'll just get a couple of codes.
  91. - You also get more items in 2 player mode. These items are listed near
  92. the end of the guide.
  93. - If you're just about to start a stage with one player, holding Start
  94. on the other controller allows a second player to spawn immediately
  95. (thus triggering the 2P item set).
  96. - You unceremoniously receive a One Up every 10 000 points.
  97. - Killing multiple enemies with the same explosion or chain of explosions
  98. gives you a constantly doubling point multiplier starting with 2 for every
  99. subsequent kill after the first one. (Eg. killing three enemies worth
  100. 100p gives you 100+200+400.)
  101. - In 2 player mode, both players receive the points from bosses and
  102. enemy structures.
  103. - The soundtrack features some clown music, quite literally. If you
  104. don't like what you're hearing, go for the mute button.
  105.
  106.
  107.
  108. Items / Power Ups
  109.
  110. - Your default base parameters are: bomb count 1, fire range 2, and
  111. 224 speed. In Battle Mode, default speed is 256.
  112. - Both bomb count and fire range max out at 8. The default values are
  113. the minimum values.
  114. - A Speed Up increases speed by 32, up to a maximum of 512. An increase
  115. of 32 allows you to move 0,5 tiles farther in one second. Eg. with 256
  116. speed, you move 4 tiles per second. With max speed, you move 8 tiles
  117. per second. Minimum speed is 128.
  118. - I never pick up any Fire Ups myself, as it allows you to use bomb
  119. moving abilities with the most safety. I also avoid max speed, since
  120. it's a bit unwieldy.
  121. - Some power ups are mutually exclusive: [Piercing / Mine / Remote /
  122. Seeker] and [Kick / Bombthrough]. Picking up another item from the
  123. group will thus replace the previous one.
  124. - Picking up a power up gives you points if you already have that power
  125. up or if it's an attribute that's already at its limit.
  126.
  127.
  128. Bomb Up 200
  129. Fire Up 200
  130. Speed Up 200
  131. Speed Down (Geta) 400
  132.
  133. Full Fire 400
  134. - Set fire range to max.
  135.
  136. Bomb Kick 400
  137. - Bump a bomb to kick it. Press X to stop the bomb (only works on your
  138. own bombs).
  139.
  140. Bomb Punch 400
  141. - Punch bombs 3 tiles away with Y.
  142.
  143. Throw (Power Glove) 600
  144. - Press and hold A while standing on a bomb to pick it up. Release to
  145. throw it 3 tiles away. You can cook the bomb by waiting before picking
  146. it up.
  147.
  148. Land Mine (Jirai Bomb) 400
  149. - Mines disappear soon after being set and will detonate with a 0,7s
  150. delay when walked on. Only one can be placed at a time (except when
  151. used by a boss). Mines can't be detected by normal enemies.
  152. - Easily a cause of self-ownage, this is the worst power up you can
  153. pick up.
  154.
  155. Piercing Bomb (Kantsuu Bomb) 400
  156. - A bomb whose fire penetrates burnable blocks and items.
  157.
  158. Remote Controller 800
  159. - Detonate bombs at will by pressing B (one at a time, starting from
  160. the earliest one placed).
  161.
  162. Seeker Bomb (Tsuiseki Bomb) 400
  163. - Chases a target if one is detected within three steps. Only one can
  164. be placed at a time. The target can't be switched.
  165. - Unaffected by shifting floor tiles and magnets.
  166. - If you're playing in 2P mode, you need to be careful of friendly fire.
  167. The only subject the bomb ignores is the one who placed it. Even in 1P
  168. mode, it can possibly lead to some self-ownage if you fail to predict
  169. the bomb's movement.
  170.
  171. Bombthrough (Bomb Tsuuka) 600
  172. - Walk through bombs. Bombs will still stun you if they land on you.
  173.
  174. Wallthrough (Block Tsuuka) 600
  175. - Walk through burnable blocks.
  176.
  177. Heart 600
  178. - +1 HP. Can't have more than two.
  179.
  180. Egg (Tamago)
  181. - Gives you a random Rooey.
  182.
  183. 1 Up 600
  184.
  185. Timer [Clock]
  186. - Freeze enemies and the time limit for 16 seconds. Even when frozen,
  187. enemies can still damage you.
  188.
  189. Invincibility Vest (Muteki Suit)
  190. - Become invincible for 16 seconds.
  191.
  192. Skull/Virus (Dokuro)
  193. - Gives you a random, counterproductive condition. These include: 128 Speed,
  194. 1024 Speed, Fire 1, fast fuse (1,5s), slow fuse A (3,5s), slow fuse B (4,0s),
  195. auto bomb drop, reverse controls, non-stop motion, unable to place bombs.
  196. - You can lose the virus by picking up any other item or by passing it on
  197. to someone else by touching them.
  198. - Can't be destroyed with fire.
  199. - Mainly found in Battle Mode.
  200.
  201.
  202. - SBM5 also features Rooeys, kangaroo companions that you can ride. Rooeys
  203. have 1 HP and possess various abilities (one each), as seen below.
  204. - You can't use Punch or Throw while riding a Rooey.
  205. - Four bosses start off riding an evil Rooey appropriately called Warooey.
  206. This one has no special ability, however, and essentially just gives the
  207. boss one more HP.
  208.
  209. Kerooey | Blue | Kick
  210. Girooey | Yellow | Block Kick
  211. Hanerooey | Pink | Jump
  212. Magicarooey | Purple | Line Bomb
  213. Marooey | Green | Roll
  214. Nagurooey | Red | Stun Punch
  215.
  216. - Kicking blocks will not affect the items they may contain.
  217. - With precise timing, jumping can be used to avoid fire. You can't jump
  218. into a burnable block even if you have Wallthrough (possibly an oversight).
  219. - Rolling will move you as far as possible in the direction you're facing
  220. at a speed of 1024 (or 16 tiles/second).
  221. - Stun Punch is completely useless in Normal Mode. Not even bosses are
  222. affected. In Battle Mode, it indeed briefly stuns the target.
  223.
  224. - There are a few things than can cause you to drop individual power ups.
  225. When this happens, items are lost in the order listed below (Remote is
  226. the highest priority, Fire is the lowest).
  227.
  228. Remote Piercing
  229. Punch Mine
  230. Kick Bomb
  231. Seeker Speed
  232. Throw Fire
  233.
  234.
  235.
  236. Movement Types
  237.
  238. - Enemies generally move straight forward until they hit something they
  239. can't pass (at which point they may turn or do a u-turn) or detect a
  240. priority target, which they will then seek for as long as the target
  241. is in detection range.
  242. - I use numbers for turning behavior and letters for the priority target
  243. variable.
  244. - Enemies can generally only perform an action when standing exactly in
  245. the middle of a tile.
  246. - Most enemies that attack (or perform some type of action that grounds
  247. them in place) will start moving in a random direction after attacking
  248. (unless they're detecting a priority target).
  249. - Even power ups can block the sight of B and C type enemies.
  250. - D-type enemies have a 7x7 tile detection range.
  251. - Enemies that can detect you beyond walls have very poor pathfinding
  252. abilities.
  253. - Enemies are unaffected by shifting floor tiles (quicksand / conveyor
  254. belt).
  255. - WT = Wallthrough
  256.
  257. 1: Can only turn when hitting a wall. Will always turn right, if possible.
  258. 2: Always turn when hitting a wall (right, if possible).
  259. 3: Unable to turn unless u-turn isn't possible.
  260. 4: Always attempt to turn left or right when a turn is possible. Will
  261. head straight if chosen turn isn't possible. Can't u-turn outside
  262. of dead ends.
  263. 5. Move freely (Priority E)
  264.
  265. A: No priority target.
  266. B: Priority target: Bomberman. Any clear, cardinal direction.
  267. C: Priority target: Bomb. Any clear, cardinal direction.
  268. D. Priority target: Bomberman. Proximity:
  269. E. Priority target: Bomberman.

  286. Flower Field Zone| 9, 10, 11
  287. Capitol Zone | 12, 13, 14, 15
  288.
  289. - There's nothing special about any of these zones. The blocks in the
  290. Carnival Zone shrink into nothing and then expand back, but this is
  291. purely cosmetic.
  292.
  293.
  294. Enemies
  295.
  296. - Official enemy names are in brackets after the generic name.
  297.

  299. - As basic as an enemy can get in Bomberman.
  300.
  301. Slime Bot | 1 HP, 1A | 300
  302. - Can turn itself (mostly) invisible. The animation is 7 seconds long,
  303. and they're invulnerable during that time.
  304.
  305. Bomb Bot a | 1 HP, 1A | 300
  306. - Can detonate itself like a bomb. Happens every 10 seconds. Fire range 4.
  307. Capable of friendly fire. Invincible while detonating.
  308. - If the enemy starts off trapped and can't move, it won't be able to
  309. detonate, not even after being freed unless it's freed before it tries
  310. to detonate for the first time.
  311.
  312. Green Tank | 3 HP, 1A | 400
  313. - The tanks will randomly use their flamethrower, which has 4 range.

  446.
  447. - 2 HP, 3 F, Land Mine. The first boss is actually one of the harder
  448. ones. He'll keep laying mines until there are four of them, and once
  449. there are, he'll start using normal bombs. Chances are you won't be
  450. able to remember the exact locations of the mines, but at least try to
  451. maintain a vague sense of where they are. Not getting wasted by the
  452. mines is nice, but that alone isn't enough; you still have to take out
  453. the boss somehow. Grabbing the Kick is mainly useful, because getting
  454. it means the boss can't use it. Actually using it on the boss is not
  455. very effective, however. Instead, the best way to score a hit is to
  456. trap the boss while he's laying a mine.
  457. - This guy's already fast by default, so you definitely don't want him
  458. to pick up any of those Speed Ups.
  459. - Regarding the mines, if your speed is really high, you can just outrun
  460. the fire.

  478. | 2-02 | Speed Up 1000 each (3 HP in 2P)
  479. 1-S | | Punch
  480. | |
  481. |____________| + Kick
  482.
  483. - Kotetsu has a sword and will kill you if he gets next to you.
  484. - Honey has a gun and will try to shoot you on sight. If you're within 4
  485. tiles of her, she'll move back one tile before shooting (unless the path
  486. is blocked). She also has Punch and Kick. The Punch is special and knocks
  487. bombs 6 tiles away.
  488. - Kotetsu and Honey can't set bombs or pick up any items. Also, these
  489. fights have a time limit unlike other bosses. They don't deal body
  490. contact damage, although getting past Kotetsu without getting sliced
  491. requires good timing.
  492. - The duo gets a little faster in subsequent zones (which makes trapping
  493. them in a corner less feasible).
  494. - These stages are not visible on the world map, they don't count towards
  495. your completion rate and you can't continue from them if you get a game
  496. over or quit playing. The game does still keep track of whether or not
  497. you've beaten these stages, and thus their gates will switch color
  498. accordingly.
  499.

  502. Zone 2
  503.
  504. Sub-Zones
  505.
  506. Demolition Zone | 1, 2, 3, 4
  507. Furnace Zone | 5, 6, 7, 8
  508. Spring Zone | 9, 10, 11
  509. Techno Zone | 12, 13, 14, 15
  510.
  511.
  512. Demolition Zone
  513.
  514. - Detonating the dynamite will cause piercing explosions (2 F) on the
  515. spot where the dynamite is and the four spots two tiles away around it.
  516. The surrounding explosions only have 1 F in the directions facing away
  517. from the dynamite.
  518. - Placing a bomb on one of the red marks will give that bomb max fire.
  519.
  520. Furnace Zone
  521.
  522. - One of the more annoying zones. The walls are flames that will respawn
  523. after 0-75 seconds (usually less than 10). 2-06 is the most dangerous
  524. one, with three spots on the right side where you can end up stuck.
  525. - A block that has respawned can't hold any item.
  526. - If you place a bomb in front of the furnace, it will get sucked in,
  527. thus activating the furnace. The furnace will then send out a trail of
  528. fire every 15 seconds that travels along the indicated path. I prefer
  529. not to activate them myself.
  530. - Block Kick is disabled in this zone.
  531.
  532. Spring Zone
  533.
  534. - The springs can launch you up to 4 tiles away. How far you'll go
  535. depends on how long you press in a given direction. You can even use
  536. them to jump beyond the outer walls and wrap. You're invulnerable
  537. while bouncing on a spring.
  538.
  539.
  540.
  541. Enemies
  542.
  543. Magnet Bot | 1 HP, 1A | 200
  544. - Pulls you in with magnetism if you're within 3 tiles. Doesn't stop
  545. until you're (pretty much) close enough to get hit. You can break the
  546. connection by placing a bomb.
  547.
  548. Mr. Moai | 2 HP, 3A | 200
  549.
  550. Bomb Bot b | 2 HP, 1A | 200
  551. - Gets a speed boost after taking damage. They won't start moving again
  552. until the invincibility from the first hit wears off.
  553.
  554. Flamethrower Bot | 1 HP, 1A | 200
  555. - Randomly shoots fire. Range 3.
  556.
  557. Headphone Bot | 2 HP, 1A | 200
  558. - They shoot electricity in cardinal directions if you're within 4 tiles.
  559. Range 1.
  560.
  561. Penguin | 1 HP, 1A | 100
  562. - Slides at you if you're within 6 tiles (direct line of sight only).
  563.
  564. Narcopac | 2 HP, 1A | 100
  565. - Falls asleep every ~5 seconds, which... does nothing, except make them
  566. easier to hit. They stay asleep for 9 seconds.
  567.
  568. R2 Bot | 2 HP, 4A | 400
  569. - Gets a speed boost after taking damage. They won't start moving again

  735. - 3-02 has a mine cart that you can ride. Riding over a block containing
  736. an item will destroy the item. Riding over an item that's been revealed
  737. does nothing.
  738. - 3-03 has a volcano that will rain fire on 5 random tiles every 11s.
  739.
  740. Underwater Zone

  742. - Going between the whirlpools will launch you in one direction.

  754. - The huge snowball will come rolling down if you destroy the nearest

  762. - Damaging electricity runs between the Tesla coils at random intervals.
  763. They stay active for about 4 seconds. They don't damage enemies.
  764. - 3-12 is one of the hardest stages in the game, at least without a good

1180. - There are some puddles that slow you down.
  1181.
  1182. Magnet Zone
  1183.
1184. - There are magnets on the left and right walls that attract bombs when
1185. active. They activate every 6,5 seconds and stay active for 6 seconds.
1186. - There are also some shifting wall blocks that shift every 3-4 or 7-8
1187. seconds. The block can't shift if it's blocked.
1188. - There are some puddles that slow you down.
1189. - 5-17 can be a little tricky, as the inner walls consist entirely of
1190. moving walls. If you don't have Punch or Throw, stay on the left side
1191. and wait for the snake to come to you.
  1192.
  1193. Gear Zone
  1194.
1195. - There are gear dispensers on the walls that shoot out gears, usually
1196. two at a time (occasionally one or three). The pace isn't that strict,
1197. but generally you get a batch every 4,5 seconds. You'll also get some
1198. longer intervals of about 8 seconds. In any case, the gears can easily
1199. end up taking out most of the enemies for you.
1200. - You need to use the small platform slowly moving back and forth to
1201. reach other sections of the stage. If you bomb the big, green gear, the
1202. platform will stop moving for 8 seconds.

1227. cardinal directions and diagonals. Bombermen are stunned if hit by a
  1228. wave.
  1229.
  1230. Radio Bot | 1 HP, 5E | 200

  1354.
1355. - Phase 1 (5 HP): You need to hit the bomb launcher while it's open. Their
1356. hit box does no damage, but you'll want to avoid the main body.
1357. - Phase 2 (5 HP): You need to hit the insides of the bell domes. He has
1358. two different attacks, but in both cases you'll want to place a bomb
1359. in the fifth row when the attack begins and then get to a safe spot. The
1360. machine is 9 tiles wide. The bell domes have a contact hitbox 3x3 tiles
1361. in size. The main body is too high to hit you (except briefly during the
1362. second attack), so you're safe in the middle. The more common attack is
1363. one where he just rolls in. The other attack has a faster startup. It
1364. also involves him charging in, but this time the bell domes don't come
1365. all the way down (there are 3 rows of safe space) and they won't damage
1366. you once they've stopped. After he stops, he smashes the ground at the
1367. bottom row with the main body (contact hitbox: 3x1 tiles), causing a
1368. quake that stuns you in place for 2,3 seconds. You could avoid the stun
1369. by touching the boundaries of the arena just before the quake hits, but
  1370. this is hardly necessary.
  1371. - Phase 3 (5 HP): 8F, 320 Speed, Throw. Don't try to fight him like the
1372. other bosses. Instead, wait for him to use his force field attack, at the
1373. end of which he'll create a special Clock item that will briefly freeze
1374. either you or him depending on who picks it up. If you get it, he'll
1375. freeze for 4 seconds. If he gets it, you'll freeze for 2,5 seconds. If
1376. you're too close when he picks it up, he'll probably be able to nail you.
1377. Only go for the Clock if you're certain you'll get it. Don't pick it up
1378. too quickly or the force field will still be on. The force field covers
1379. an area of 5x5 tiles and will both deal damage and detonate bombs, although
1380. fire won't penetrate the force field. You should be able to avoid the
1381. force field just fine so long as you stay away from the corners.

1400. any damage, but instead will stun you and force you to drop a power up.
1401. - 29 and 30 have conveyor belts that lead bombs to teleport tiles that
1402. teleport bombs to random tiles.

  1428. damage.
  1429.
  1430. Vampire Bat | 1 HP, 2D | 400
1431. - If it spots a bomb within 5 tiles, it will halt and become invincible

  1433. has a brief cooldown.
  1434.

  1743.
  1744. Battle Mode
  1745.
  1746.
1747. - Battle Mode offers three different modes: Battle Royale Mode, Maniac
1748. Mode, and Config Battle Mode.
1749. - The deathmatch can be either free-for-all or team-based (except in
1750. Maniac Mode). Even when team-based, friendly fire is still a thing.
  1751.
1752. - Battle Royale is basic deathmatch.
  1753.
1754. - Maniac Mode allows you to customize the items that are found in the
1755. stage. You can also use the Handicap option to adjust characters' HP.
1756. However, you can't change the rules, and you can only play in Stage 1.
  1757.
1758. - Config Battle allows you to play deathmatch with custom characters.
1759. You can customize a character's appearance and default items. Indeed,
1760. you find no items within the stages themselves (except two Eggs). You
1761. have 12 points to use when customizing default items, with each item
1762. having a certain cost, as seen below.
  1763. 9 Remote 3 Bombthrough 5 Punch
  1764. 3 Piercing 4 Wallthrough 1 Bomb / Fire / Speed
  1765. 2 Mine 5 Throw
  1766. 6 Seeker 4 Kick
1767. - Once you've customized a character, the game gives you a code that
1768. you could use to create the same custom character on another copy of
  1769. the game.
1770. - Config Battle keeps track of each character's number of wins and losses.
  1771.
1772. - In the Rules screen, you can change the skill level of AI-controlled
1773. characters (Yowai (Weak) / Futsuu (Normal) / Tsuyoi (Strong)), how many
1774. rounds you need to win to win the match (1-5), time limit (1-5m / Inf.),
1775. Sudden Death (Off / On / Random), Misobon (Off / On / Super), and Bowling
  1776. Bomber (Off / On).
1777. - Sudden Death refers to how the play area will be reduced during the
1778. last minute of play. When set to Off, the play area will be reduced to
1779. 9x7 tiles. Otherwise, it will be completely filled.
1780. - Misobon allows killed characters to ride a vehicle on the walls of
1781. the arena and throw bombs. If set to Super, a character will return
1782. to the arena if they manage to kill someone. Misobon is disabled once
1783. there's less than 1 minute of time left. Hold B to move faster.
1784. - Bowling Bomber is a mini-game the winner of the match gets to play.
1785. The winner will then start the next round with the item(s) they won
  1786. in the mini-game.
  1787.
1788. - When a character dies, all their items are spread around the arena.
  1789.
1790. - There are 10 stages to choose from in Battle Mode. I only play 1 and
  1791. 6 myself.
