  1. The Curse of Sarushima
  2. a script mod by jeffXvX
  3.
  4. Q: How did you make this hack?
  5. A: All the game's dialogue and item names are in a text file. I used a website called Hypertranslate that lets you run text through the Google API translate multiple times.
  6.
  7. Q: How many/what languages were used?
  8. A: Most of the script was translated through 20 languages. A few parts were translated over 100 times. I didn't record which languages were used.
  9.
  10. Q: Did you read the entire translation?
  11. A: Yes, all 10,000+ lines of it. I wanted to make sure there was nothing too inappropriate.
  12.
  13. Q: Was this all machine translated or did you edit parts of it?
  14. A: The content is all machine translated except for an Easter egg I added.
  15. The only manual editing was for capitalization and punctuation.
  16.
  17. Q: Is this hack available somewhere?
  18. A: I haven't posted it online, but you can DM me for the file.
  19.
  20. Q: Why is the game called Curse of Sarushima Island? Isn't the whole point that everything is in English?
  21. A: In Japanese, "monkey" is "saru" and "island" is "shima" so the amalgamation of those words is "Sarushima."
  22. But Sarushima is an actual island in Japan and since it is a proper noun, Google did not translate it back.
  23.
  24. Q: Where did you get the idea to do this?
  25. A: Someone made a similar hack of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
  26.
  27. Q: Why are there inconsistencies in how certain words are translated throughout the script?
  28. A: Google translate considers context. Also, some parts of the script were run through different languages because the initial results were not satisfactory.
  29.
  30. Q: How was insult sword fighting handled?
  31. A: I ran every insult/response for insult swordfighting separately through a different set of languages. I kept translating each insult/response until I got one I liked.
