  1. “The Hobbit”, a novel by J.R.R Tolkien, is about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who isn't capable of doing outside activities. Bilbo discovers that he is in a conflict to steal treasure from a fierce and large dragon. This adventure gives him a life changing experience. He will discover that he is not the person who he was, an inactive, boring hobbit. The theme “being a hero” is the main idea of this text. An ordinary person can do heroic things but being this does not change his personality.

  3. Bilbo Baggins possess all the qualities of a boring hobbit, a love of comfort; a doubt against strangers and the outside world; a dislike for the word “adventure”. Here we meet Gandalf wanting Bilbo to be a burgular for the dwarves to get the treasure. Bilbo isn't ignorant or mean so he decides to be very hospitable and caring towards the dwarves. “He had a horrible thought that the cakes might run short, then he – as the host: he knew his duty and stuck to it however painful – he might have to go without.” Bilbo tried to refuse the expedition. But unfortunately his pride leads him to be part of the adventure “you can stop at thirteen and have all the bad luck you like, or go back to digging coal.” This links us to the theme Bilbo has finally accepted to be apart of the adventure and now the road to be a heroic person begins.

  5. Bilbo has now felt a sense of accomplishment. He comes up with great ideas and plans such as to get the dwarves and himself where he is now. Bilbo and the dwarves appear to be in real trouble without the guidance of Gandalf. Bilbo wakes up discovering that he is caught in a web. Bilbo overcomes his fear and kills the spider. After he regains consciousness he finds that he feels much braver “Somehow the killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of the wizard or the dwarves or of anyone else, made a difference to Mr Baggins.” At that point he discovers some inner strength in him that he never discovered before. “He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach”. With his clever thinking he lures the spiders away from the dwarves and defends the dwarves while they escape from the web. This is the best example that the author displayed of Bilbo showing courageous activity, he knows that the spiders are deadly and dangerous but he goes in anyway to save his friends. That shows a fact of heroism His personality doesn't change but he finds himself braver and that keeps him going on.

  7. Bilbo finds himself in a mess between the Elves, Men and Dwarves of Dain against the Goblins and Wildwolves who wants the treasure. But each one of them are greedy and want it to themselves. Bilbo maintains his mind, common sense and courage he comes up with a cunning solution, his solution is to give the Arkenstone to the men(being a burgular, but hes giving 1/14th of his share) Unfortunately his plan backfires and they don't do as Bilbo said. So then a battle of five armies begin but Bilbo does not fight “Baggins!, he exclaimed. Well I never! Alive after all – I am glad! I began to wonder if your luck would see through” Even Thorin repents his greed and apologizes for his harsh behaviour before he dies. Bilbo has changed through the novel from an inactive, lazy hobbit to a confident, noble, clever hobbit.

  9. In conclusion, “The Hobbit” is about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who takes a life journey experience which changes his feelings towards the outside world. Bilbo is heroic but this change does not really affect his personality. Bilbo discovers he can do things he didn't know he could do, like stopping wars and killing creatures to save others. The theme is ordinary people can do heroic things but being this does not change his personality.
