- Jacob turned his head around. Through the thick wafts of smoke pouring from the underground, he saw a face.
- What had attracted his attention in the first place was a song that had been playing since before he'd even turned into the street. Jacob rarely payed attention to his surroundings in such ways, but he did start noticing something familiar about the music as he walked past the few people also going through the street.
- There was nothing very dark, mysterious, or even merely excentric about the street at first sight, however when Jacob rotated his body to face the origin of the sound and found himself face to face with the faint ghost-like face of a total stranger, he felt reality giving away, giving away to something wrong, like a déjà-vu giving away to some make-believe memory, or like the reality of a movie character realizing the script was all wrong.
