- A Soldier Made Friends With 3 Dogs. But He NEVER Expected This When A Bomb Went Off…
- Sgt. Chris Duke was serving in Afghanistan. While there, he made friends with three stray dogs, named Rufus, Target, and Sasha. Every day, he would pet them, feed them and take care of them. According to him, the dogs reminded him of home and made his time away more bearable. He didn't expect that his new friendship would actually save his life.
- In the middle of the night, a suicide bomber tried to attack his base. He and his fellow National Guardsmen woke up to Rufus, Target, and Sasha barking feverishly.
- The three clever dogs were actually blocking the suicide bomber from entering the camp, biting his leg in the process. The attacker was startled by the heroic dogs and was forced to detonate the bomb before entering. Because of the courageous act of the dogs, all 50 soldiers survived that night. Sasha, the youngest pup, unfortunately died from sustained injuries.
- Duke’s deployment ended one month later. He headed home to Georgia, where he got to work on getting Rufus and Target off the dangerous streets of Afghanistan and transporting them to the states to give them a better home and a better life. It was no easy feat, but Duke was determined to be reunited with the two surviving dogs.
- Hope for the Warriors, an organization that works to grant the wishes of injured soldiers and their families, put out a call for help. $21,000 was unbelievably raised! That was enough money to finally bring the dogs home. Target was adopted by the army medic who saved the dog’s life after the blast. While, Rufus is now part of Duke’s family.
- Duke was reunited with Target and Rufus in Atlanta. He and his wife desired this opportunity to give Rufus the best life possible, in exchange of his!
