How their entire essences seem diametrically opposed to one another. Clear is a machine, manmade, as nonhuman as it gets, but he looks and acts and breathes like a person would. He has sentience, he feels emotions. Could such a thing have a soul? Mink's tribe lived simply and as close to nature as possible; he was raised in a world that avoided technology and embraced life built with his own hands from what the earth gave him.
Clear was built at the behest of a man that took everything from Mink.
How do you reconcile that?
He tries to compartmentalize it and say that Clear is no different from an AllMate, a tool that exists to be used packaged in a pretty form that makes it more palatable for human consumption.
But that isn't true, or at least, it isn't the whole truth.
There's some spark of humanity that exists outside of simple flesh and blood, and spending time with him is enough for Mink to know somewhere deep in his bones that what he's dealing with is a person.
More than that, a good person, uncomplicated, earnest, and straightforward to a degree that Mink didn't believe it was possible.
He tries to search for some hidden duplicity, a failsafe or something nefarious that Toue put into his playthings, and finds... Nothing. Just Clear, trying his best to be more than what he was made for.

A robot like him doesn’t need to breathe. The feature is there, yes, but it’s a superficial one at best. Something to help him fit in with the general population; all the better to blend in and wait until the moment was right. But it’s superficial.

And yet, his chest felt so tight hearing Mink reassure him. His breathing was faltering, for goodness’ sakes, shaking hearing Mink sound so… so sincere.

“Of course,” Clear answered; he took his hand away from Mink’s chest, but it wasn’t left abandoned for long. He rested his head against Mink’s chest, and listened. His heartbeat was burned into Clear’s memory, ensuring that he would never forget it… But, he still liked to hear it.
