- The biggest reason I dislike Esports is because I feel it puts focus on bad games and takes fun away from good ones in a nutshell. Look at pre-esports, people who loved the game kept it alive, kept growing, kept learning, kept playing and kept having fun. Minor annoyances were just dealt with, everyone knew the matchup for Old Sagat in SFII and Akuma was banned, it worked.
- Nowadays, people don't play most of the games for if they actually like it. The play it for the sport, money, viewers or whatnot. Nobody liked SFV when it came out, yet they played it to death and still do. Many top players when interviewed even note that they detest the game and think it's absolutely stupid, but they keep playing it because it's their job. On the flipside, Marvel Infinite was noted by many top players to be their favourite mechanicswise and an absolute blast to play, but it got dropped from esports so byebye.
- Same with classics like SFII, MVC2, SNK2 etc. These games are absolutely fanfavourites and they still love playing them, but they don't unless there's cash in it. Daigo even said his favourite game is Darkstalkers and that he hates how it won't pay his bills like SFV does, otehrwise he'd just play that. Can you picture that? Here's a grown man who has a game he likes, but doesn't play it since it doesn't pay his bills. That's like I wake up every morning saying "ah man I wish I could play Ninja Gaiden but shit guess it's time to play God of War 2018 again since that pays my bills". That's horrible.
- You can bet your ass that the second SF6 is out, nobody will ever replay or do a fan-tournament for SFV like they still do for SF2 or 3.
- That aside, it's also really had a massive impact in the game's themselves. Games are way more barebones in features, often focusing more on an online-mode and robust trainingmode instead of fun singleplayer content or other types of content i.e. costumes, weird gameplay modes etc. It's also really pushed balance-patches to the forfront, instead of fans just learning how to deal with a broken character, it has to be fixed now since, if they don't, entire tournaments will just be that character since winning means paying morgage this month.
- Games are also made more in mind with "what is fun to watch" compared to what is fun to play. Which I think is just a horrible idea.
- Lastly, I hate how the spotlight meant it had to become more PG-13. Original basement/venue tournaments financed through fans of the game had absolutely hilarious and brutal commentary, today being replaced by a random guy shouting in your ear when it gets tense and the occasional "amg going for the low kick great spacing".
