TCP Convergance
Due to choice between -
- XN - Sequence Packet
- CYCLADES TS
- Delta-t
- TCP
Today TCP is easily seen as wrong choice, but it was the first attempt at something new from the first networking attempts of NCP. It was not expected to get it right... Its a new direction. TCP attempted to utilize a single PDU (protcal data unit) in an attempt to reduce overhead of multiple message types (ack. syn. etc.) Analysis of network traffic today prove that they are all still treated differently...
Delta-t is still used by DoE today. Its the only unique one above in that connections utilize timers for establishment.
Splitting IP
Bad idea, IP still names a INTERFACE, creates a multi-homing issue that is really unsolved. This creates subnets and other nasty stuff to get redundancy.
Addressing and DNS
Jerry Zaltzer MIT Paper 1982 - Missing implementation on addressing.
We used to just download the new hosts file weekly, then it got so large it took to long so we needed a new method to address and used DNS.
