  3. (This is the Core class.)
  4. ---
  5. Homework: write a list of problems an undersea city would have to deal with (for example: how to get clean drinking water), and then try to think of solutions to some of those problems
  6. ---
  7. problems: traffic, public transportation, sports location, highways, cleaning the streets, getting clean drinking water, getting air, getting sun, temperature regulation, industry, removing industrial waste, water pressure, getting electricity, removing trash, getting medicine, removing dead people and other medical waste
  8. solutions: public transportation, (figure them out with your group)
  9. ---
  10. With your group, design (draw a map of) an undersea city. Design solutions to at least some of the above problems, and also decide things like where the city will be, how many people will live there, how they will make money, and the name of the city.
  11. ---
  12. BREAK
  13. ---
  14. Share your city design with the rest of the class.
  15. ---
  16. If you are contrasting it with your ocean city, you can get food from the land, not the ground.
  17. ---
  18. p. 41 part 1
  19. Twitter is an example of “microblogging”.
  20. blog = web+log (a log is a record of events)
  21. part 2 - read the blog entry
  22. 1 Personal story from the last weekend.
  23. 2 The things you need to take with you when you go to the beach.
  24. 3 his children (James may be the father, and “we” in the first sentence is his wife and him)
  25. ---
  26. part 4 - what verbs and adjectives does James use in the story, instead of the verbs in the box in part (b)
  27. raining - pouring rain (= raining very hard)
  28. full of people - packed (= so full there’s no room to move around)
  29. looking - staring (= looking in a very focused manner)
  30. arrived - got there
  31. holding - clutching (= holding very tightly)
  32. part 4c - with a partner choose words from the box to complete the sentences
  33. 1 raced (= ran quickly)
  34. 2 exhausted (= very tired)
  35. 3 boiling (= so hot, maybe also very humid)
  36. 4 scrambled (= moved quickly but with some difficulty, usually with hands and feet)
  37. 5 wandered (= moved slowly and without a specific destination)
  38. 6 collapsed (= fell down, often in an exhausted way)
  39. ---
  40. We can call some of this figurative language, because for example “boiling hot” weather does not really mean it is hot enough to boil water. We exaggerate to emphasize something.
  41.
  42. In the blog entry: “We grabbed our beach stuff, jumped into the car, and headed down to the bay.”
  43. = We got into the car quickly, but probably didn’t really jump.
  44. ---
  45. Homework: write a personal blog post about a recent weekend when something unusual happened (If nothing unusual really happened to you recently, imagine that you live in the underwater city you created, and write a blog post from that perspective.) After you write a rough draft, try to change some of the verbs and adjectives to more interesting, figurative words.
