  1. Despite what you hear about European countries starting to reopen their economies, it’s still too early to visit.
  2.
  3. Today the European Commission made an official request to the European Parliament and European Council to extend the travel ban for visitors coming from outside the EU another month, to June 15, 2020.
  4.
  5. The temporary travel restriction applies to “all non-essential travel from third countries to the EU+ area,” reads the communication. The European countries would prioritize opening borders between EU countries before opening up the bloc to the rest of the world.
  6.
  7. On March 16, the Commission originally invited the heads of state of EU members to introduce a temporary ban on non-essential travel to the bloc for an initial period of 30 days. Then, in April, the ban was extended another month, to May 15. This is the second requested extension.
  8.
  9. Per the Commission’s roadmap for the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, border checks will be lifted in a phased manner, with easing internal border restrictions taking precedence over opening external borders. In a nutshell, it’s too early to allow inbound travel from non-EU countries.
  10.
  11. “While some EU and Schengen Associated States are taking their first cautious steps to ease social distancing measures within their territories, the overall objective of limiting the spread of the Coronavirus via reduced social interaction remains,” argues the European Commission. “Moreover, the situation in Europe as well as the situation worldwide remains very fragile and it cannot be excluded that measures may need to be reintroduced in the event of a resurgence in infections.”
  12.
  13. Like elsewhere in the world, air travel has been at a standstill in Europe. The number of flights in Europe has decreased by 91 percent compared to 2019, and most remaining flights are mainly limited to cargo.
  14.
  15. “The objective of a travel restriction at external borders is to reduce the risk of spread of the disease through travel to the EU,” states the Commission. “The month of April has seen a continued drastic reduction in global travel, both to and from the EU, as well as within the EU.”
  16.
  17. Except for Ireland, all EU countries and non-EU Schengen countries have implemented travel restrictions. Ireland has its own slow-but-steady, five-phase roadmap along what Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar calls “a journey to a new normal.” In Varadkar’s plan, Irish pubs will not open until August 10.
  18.
  19. Earlier this week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said it’s “too hard to tell” whether international travel will be possible this year. “This is a great time to explore America,” he said.
