observational comedy

I'm not very good at observational humor and I think it's because I'm a hermit. I don't go outside enough to actually do any observing. The most people observing I do is while I'm on stage doing comedy, so I've written a ton of solid, insightful jokes about that. Jokes like, "isn't it weird how people always look at you while you're on stage? What's up with that? Anyone else super nervous right now?" I also wrote a lot of jokes about people laughing and how I hope to witness this phenomenon while I'm performing some day. I think I should just grow a hedge maze in my backyard and trap some interesting people inside. I'd probably come up with some killer maze solving material; maybe I'd make some kind of poignant social analogies out of the whole thing; raise some questions like, "is the cheese really worth the struggle?" I've been trying to get better at the observational stuff because I feel like my sense of humor isn't always the relatable type. I've been practicing comedic observation a lot lately while sitting alone in my apartment. I stare at my feet for hours, waiting for them to do something funny. I take notes; I write down things like, "some sort of murder mystery joke about feet. Something's afoot." and "people always say put your best foot forward, but after some careful deliberation I decided that both my feet kind of suck."
